During 1993 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Yale University, and during 1996 he was the Stroum Professor of Jewish Studies and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle. During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. The 3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE Jewish Septuagint renders the Hebrew with a Greek expression that may be conveyed in English as \u201caccept correction\u201d. The Latin Vulgate has \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adprehendite disciplinam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> -- embrace discipline\u201d. The New JPS translation (1999) of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.2.12?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 2:12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers \u201cpay homage in good faith\u201d, but notes that the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difficulty of translating this expression is due to the various meanings of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely, this word should be understood as meaning \u201cpure\u201d, as in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.24.4?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalms 24:4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This yields a translation of the expression <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mean \u201ckiss (or embrace) that which is pure\u201d. However, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also means \u201cson\u201d, though only in later Biblical Hebrew, as an Aramaism. Nevertheless, this lead Protestant Christians, since the time of Calvin and Luther in the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century to misinterpret <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mean \u201cKiss the Son\u201d i.e. \u201cEmbrace Christ as the Son of God\u201d. A similar interpretation had already been suggested in the 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Middle English Bible translations that were made under the direction of John Wycliffe. This influenced the 17<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century King James (\u201cAuthorized\u201d) version that has been retained in many English translations to this day.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Bereishit_Rabbah.83.5?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Bereshit Rabbah 83:5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and parallels preserve an engaging interpretation of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> embedded in an agricultural parable. The straw, the hay and the chaff were arguing among themselves, each one claiming, \u201cthe world was created only for my sake!\u201d The wheat interjected \u201cjust wait until you come to the threshing floor, then we will all know for whom the field was planted.\u201d At the time of threshing, the farmer winnowed the chaff away in the wind and left the straw on the ground, and he burned the leftover stubble of hay. But, the wheat he gathered into a mound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And everyone who would see the wheat would kiss it, as it says: \u201ckiss the (pure) grain\u201d (Psalms 2:12) [that can now be made into bread].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same way, the Nations of the World each claim, I am most important and for me the world was created. But Israel says to them, just you wait for the Day that is coming when we will know for whom the world was indeed created. About this Day it is written: \u201cFor lo! That Day is at hand, burning like an oven. All the arrogant and all the doers of evil shall be straw, and the day that is coming\u2014said the Lord of Hosts\u2014shall burn them to ashes\u2026\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Malachi.3.19?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malachi 3:19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And further it is written: \u201cYou shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them off. The first verse in Chapter 1 starts that way, as does the last phrase of the final verse in Chapter 2.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, that raises a numerological challenge: If chapters 1-2 were combined, the total number of psalms would fall from 150 to 149. (It would also lower the total number of chapters in Tanakh from 929 to 928!) There is even evidence that other chapters were joined, including 9-10, 42-43, 70-71, 96-97, and 114-115. Various codices (manuscript books of Tanakh) have chapter 117 combined with either 116 or 118, as well as standing independently. In fact, there is a rabbinic tradition that places the total number of psalms at 147, equivalent to the lifespan of the Patriarch Jacob (PT Shabbat 16:1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Greek Septuagint differs from the Masoretic division in four places: 9-10 are combined (as in Tosafot Megillah 17b, s.v. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-David<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), as are 114-115. On the other hand, 116 and 147 are each divided in two, yielding the same total of 150. The commentary of Menachem HaMe\u2019iri (Provence, 1249-1310) also combines 114-115, 117 joins with 116, and divides 118 in three, totaling 151. The Aleppo Codex combines 114-115 totaling 149 psalms, but it also inserts spaces between each of the alphabetic octets in Psalm 119, raising the number of psalm units past 170, possibly meant to correspond to the number of weekly Torah portions in the triennial cycle typical of the Land of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for chapter 2, we have already cited Ibn Ezra\u2019s assignment of this psalm to King David\u2019s coronation (see our Introduction); this contrasts with the alternative that assigns it to the King Messiah. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as king of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chapter Summary<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm speaks of the suffering that befell the author, symbolizing and anticipating the sufferings of both the individual Jew and the Jewish People throughout the generations. It seeks to inspire the Jew with hope and strength during the long exile, until the arrival of the Mashiach (Messiah).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of twelve verses, subdivided into four parts.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 1-3, the nations of the world shout out against God and his anointed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 4-6, God speaks to the nations.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 7-9, the psalmist speaks of and relates God\u2019s words to him.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 10-12, the psalmist himself addresses the nations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say This Psalm<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a Headache--Verse 9 refers to \u201cBreak them with a rod of iron, as a potter\u2019s vessel, shatter them.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a Stormy Sea--Verse 12 exhorts the reader to \u201cDo homage in purity [of heart], lest He be angry and you will be lost on your way, for His wrath is kindled suddenly; fortunate are all who take refuge in Him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Biblical Places<\/em>:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df-Zion-often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebbusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. As they stand, they make little sense, and the most elaborate efforts have been undertaken--none very convincing--to make the text mean something by extensive reconstructive surgery. The present translation hews to the Masoretic text, merely revocalizing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>bar<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(son? wheat?) as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cpurity.\u201d The usual sense of the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nashqu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is \u201cto kiss,\u201d but it also means \u201cto bear [or, wield] arms\u201d (compare its use in Psalm 78:9, I Chronicles 12:2, 2 Chronicles 17:17). Do the coronation and the rebellion discussed in the psalm reflect actual historical events in the days of King David? Solomon? Perhaps from the days of Jehoshaphat? Achaz? Hizkiyahu? Alexander Yannai? Or is it perhaps meant to be understood as occurring in the future - the end of days and the messianic era? All options are possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Messiah and prince<\/em>. The messiah of verse 2 is he who has been anointed to his position, just like the king \u201cinstalled\u201d in verse 6. The act of anointing with oil (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nisuch<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the head of the chosen (thus \u201cinstalling\u201d them) left its mark in the names of some of the positions (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasich<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - \u201cprince\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Son of (a) God<\/em>. The connection between the king and God as a connection between father and son is a familiar idea in the cultures of the ancient Near East (and not only). There is a wide variety of meanings to this idea - from mere metaphor, through a dialogic encounter between the two, to the ascription of actual divine qualities to the king.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Who is worshiped?<\/em> Who are the peoples subservient to:\u00a0 the kingship (verses 8-9), or to God (verse 11)? Sometimes in this psalm it seems like the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Closing the circle<\/em>. Psalm1 opens with \u201chappy is the man,\u201d and psalm 2 closes with \u201chappy are all who take refuge in Him.\u201d This has led some to connect the two compositions, despite their different content and themes.
