One name? What is so important about that? Moreover, if you look at the Hebrew, Zechariah doesn\u2019t use the Hebrew word for \u201cLord\u201d which is \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adonay<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d but rather the ineffable four letter name that we can transliterate Y-H-V-H.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This substitution is common throughout the Bible and Jewish tradition, and the God of Israel is also called by many other names. Zechariah\u2019s declaration is an invitation to pause and think about God\u2019s name and what it might mean for God to truly have one name.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the names we use for God: \u201cCreator of the Universe,\u201d \u201cRedeemer of Israel,\u201d \u201cHealer of the Sick\u201d \u201cCompassionate\u201d and even, \u201cGod\u201d\u00a0 aren\u2019t actually names. Rather, they are adjectives or job descriptions that express the ways we understand God to act in the world (or ways we would like God to act in the world).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only Y-H-V-H is a proper noun, a name in the truest sense of the word. And that might be all we can say about it with any certainty. Its pronunciation is long lost, and its significance debated.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One possibility derives from Moses\u2019 first direct encounter with God at the burning bush, where God declares \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 I \u200eWill Be What I Will Be. God is present and calls Godself\u00a0 \u201c\u05d0\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ehyeh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I Will Be\u201d in the first person, as the speaker. When Moses reports to the people, he switches to the third person \u201c\u200e \u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yehiyeh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u200e<\/em> \u2013 God will be\u201d because he is speaking about God, who is unseen. According to the 12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century commentator R. Samuel ben Meir (Rashbam), the proper name Y-H-V-H is formed by substituting the \u200eletter <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the second <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yod<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, God spoke to Moses about the future. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ehyeh<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Yehiyeh<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are imperfect\/future forms, while the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>vav<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an indicator of the present tense. Therefore, the blended spelling can be understood as bringing together all of the tenses in Biblical Hebrew. Y-H-V-H represents God who speaks but is unseen, in the present, past and future. That\u2019s a complicated mouthful.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps that is why we prefer to use epithets when speaking about and to God, and why the ability to call and It is evident from the text why that is so. In 14:16-19, Zecharia discusses the end of days' Sukkot festival for the nations of the world. The significance of Sukkot is also referenced in Amos 9:4: \"On that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David.\"\u00a0 Passover is the holiday that is the connection between God and his people; the birth of the nation of Israel. It is Sukkot that is the holiday for all the nations (for an explanation of this difference <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/527\/post\/77669\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Torah reading on the holiday of Sukkot also brings out this theme. Each day we read the list of the sacrifices from Numbers 29. The total number of sacrifices brought on the holiday is 70. One reason given for the specifically 70 sacrifices is to match the traditional number of the nations of the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there will remain unrepentant non-Israelites, enemies of this vision. In verse 12, the prophet describes the plague that will befall the enemies of Israel \"each one's flesh will melt away while he is standing on his feet, each one's eye will melt away in the sockets and each one's tongues will melt away in their mouths\". This verse directly matches the death that befalls the Nazi officers who open the Ark of the Covenant at the end of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We say so every day in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shema Yisrael<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prayer, \u201cHear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one (Deut. 6:4).\u201d Zechariah prophesied hundreds of years after the events of Deuteronomy and, surely, he knew of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shema Yisrael<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proclamation. Our sages understand Zechariah\u2019s language to mean that a time will come when the whole world will recognize the oneness of God and when that happens we will only require one name for God out of the seven that are used in Tanach to describe different aspects of God\u2019s essence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judaism has a tradition of believing that names are tied to the essence of beings. In Maimonides\u2019 Thirteen Principles of Faith, number two on the list is \u201cI believe with perfect faith that the Creator, blessed be <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His name<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is one, and that He alone is our God.\u201d. In Genesis 12, when God called to Abraham to fulfill his destiny He promised, \u201cI will make you into a great nation and I will bless you and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will make your name great<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d When we talk of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiddush Hashem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we understand it as sanctifying God\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">name<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Evidently \u201cmaking a name for yourself\u201d is spiritually significant.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re still left with the question of the tense used in Zechariah\u2019s prophecy \u201cGod <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be one and His name one.\u201d Much of our Tanach, and almost all of the Books of Prophets are rooted in the future tense \u2013 looking forward to, and working towards what we will become as a nation and how the world will evolve to achieve the coming of the Messiah. When Moses encountered God at the burning bush he asked, \u201cWho are You?\u201d, wanting to know the essence of God. The answer received was \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ehyey asher Ehyey<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 I will be what I will be (Exodus 3:14).\u201d Explains Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in his book <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future Tense<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c\u2019It is as if God had said \u2018My name is the future tense. If you seek to understand me, first you will have to understand the nature and significance of the future tense.\u2019\u201d Perhaps this also means, before we can know the name of God, we have to understand His essence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zechariah\u2019s prophecy promises a time when the world will be unified in its belief in one God and in turn will know His The purpose was that all the world\u2019s inhabitants should recognize that nature had changed for the better; that a dry as wood flinty rock had been transformed by God into a wellspring, and that the miracle would occur in merit of His Temple. This would be a sign and omen that \u201cTorah shall go forth from Zion and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem,\u201d and to indicate, thereby, that God had created something new upon the earth so that in Jerusalem, that had never had spring water, a wellspring would emerge at the time of salvation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Zechariah, whose career overlapped with Ezekiel, incorporated the same symbolism of \u201cliving water\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mayim chayim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) into his prophecy, even to the distribution of the water into the \u201cEastern\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha-yam ha-kadmoni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and \u201cWestern\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha-yam ha-acharon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) seas. The latter designates the Mediterranean Sea and is already attested to in the Torah (Deut. 11:34). The former, then, would designate the Dead Sea, which, according to this prophecy, will experience a return to life. Amos also said, 41 chapters ago, \u201cAh, you who wish For the day of the LORD! Why should you want The day of the LORD? It shall be darkness, not light!\u201d (Amos 5:18). Zechariah\u2019s day of the LORD is also darkness, but after that will come a period of hope, full of light and living waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Egypt is an exception<\/em>. Whoever does not come to Jerusalem, will not receive rainfall. But Egypt, if they don\u2019t come, won\u2019t be hurt by that threat, since they have the Nile (verse 18).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>GI pots<\/em>.When the whole world comes to Jerusalem, there has to be a special recruitment effort: \u201cindeed, every metal pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holy to the LORD of Hosts. And all those who sacrifice shall come and take of these to boil [their sacrificial meat] in\u201d (verse 21).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Holiness and commerce<\/em>. In Zechariah\u2019s House of God \u201cthere shall be no more traders\u201d (verse 21). Why? Perhaps because commerce on Temple grounds is unseemly, or perhaps because nothing shall be lacking, and so there will be need to buy anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chazak<\/em>!
