In this chapter, Zechariah reported on his vision of a flying scroll (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">megillah `afah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> 1) whose dimensions were \u201ctwenty cubits long and ten cubits wide\u201d (2), which, as already noted by Ibn Ezra, matched those of the hall of Solomon\u2019s Temple (see 1 Kings 6:3). The scroll\u2019s contents\u2014here, called \u201da curse\u201d (<em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2014 enumerated the sins of Judah, specifically robbery and false testimony, and its taking flight was the indication that those sins were about to be punished.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Midrash assumed that the scroll was one of the Torah, saying, \u201cThree saw the entire Torah: Moses (citing Exodus 24:12), Ezekiel (2:10), and Zechariah (citing our chapter)\u201d (Bereshit Rabbati 3:14). Another Midrash, however, expressed this perplexity: \u201cR. Abbahu said: Neither the hide of an elephant nor that of a camel matches these dimensions, so how can you say that [it was a Torah scroll]?\u201d\u00a0 (Vayikra Rabbah 6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the same Midrash also asked, rhetorically: \u201cWhence did [the scroll] come? From the entrance to the palace (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heikhal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), [whose dimensions] a Mishnah places as 40 cubits high and twenty cubits wide\u201d (Middot 3:3), namely, twice the size of our scroll. The answer to this conundrum appears in the commentary of Rashi. Although he cited the Aramaic Targum of Yonatan, who rendered <em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">afah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as flying (Aramaic <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parcha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is the standard definition, he also noted that \u201cOur Sages interpreted it as folded (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kefulah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d Unfold a 20X10 scroll and it will fill a space 40X20.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span vision reported in this chapter concerns a receptacle holding a measure, or tub (<em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eiphah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is described as: \u201cThis tub that is approaching\u2014this, said [the Angel], is their eye in all the land\u201d (6), a term highly reminiscent of the seven eyes of the Menorah in the previous Zechariah is told that this woman is the literal embodiment of Wickedness, and the leaden disk sealing her in, silencing her forever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tub, with the body of Wickedness within it, is then carried away by two other women - described as having wings, and the wind in their hair - to the land of Shinar, where it will be used to erect a shrine.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting aside the obvious difficulty of women representing wickedness, a common enough trope throughout our ancient biblical texts (think of the Book of Lamentations, where the feminine is used to embody sin and wrongdoing) there are lessons to be gleaned from this short episode which we can take into our modern lives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live today in an age of misinformation and miscommunication, where it is easy to access a world-wide web full of factual inaccuracies, that become wedged inside the hearts and minds of those who consume them, much like the curses lodged themselves in the homes of the accursed, consuming them down to every last timber and stone (Zechariah 5:4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we move forward into a new Jewish year, particularly in the world in which we currently find ourselves, let us be mindful and critical of what we read or watch, and where it comes from. He [the angel] asked me, \u2018What do you see?\u2019 I answered, \u2018I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide\u2026[the angel explained] \u2018Everyone who has stolen, as is forbidden on one side [of the scroll], has gone unpunished. And everyone who has sworn [falsely], as is forbidden on the other side of it, has gone unpunished\u2019\" (verses 1-3). Since one cubit is equivalent to 18 inches in length, this fantastic scroll would be 30 by 15 feet in size, far beyond the size of any earthly scroll. Moreover, Zechariah envisions this scroll as flying (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">afah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi interprets the word <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>afah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kefula <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-- <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folded, doubled over\u201d, suggesting this already enormous scroll would be even more extensive when unfolded. In Rashi\u2019s source, Talmud Eruvin 21a, Zechariah\u2019s scroll is compared to Ezekiel\u2019s scroll: \u201cThen I looked, and I saw a hand stretched out to me. In it was a scroll, which he unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe\u201d (Ezekiel 2:9-10). Rashi states that what Ezekiel was shown was a \u201cscroll of the Oral Torah \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">megillat torah she-be-al-peh<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud goes on to interpret Ezekiel\u2019s scroll according to what Zechariah envisioned: \u201cI see a flying <em>[<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">afah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>] <\/em>scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide\u2026\u201d. Here the word <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>afah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is interpreted according to its meaning in Babylonian Aramaic, \u201cfolded, doubled-over\u201d. This leads to the assertion that \u201cif you were to open (i.e. unfold) it, it would measure 20 cubits by 20 cubits\u201d. Moreover, the description of such scrolls having been written on both sides, leads to the assertion that \u201cif you were to split (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qalfat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) it\u201d, it would measure 40 cubits by 40 cubits!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extraordinary descriptions of these prophetic scrolls may reflect actual scribal practices. Folding the sheets of a scroll like the bellows of a concertina led to the evolution of the codex, the multiple page form of the book utilizing both sides of each page . Compare the custom of reading the Scroll of Esther like the folded pages of a letter. Moreover, a single hide was sometimes split to create two sheets, the hair-side becoming what is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qlaf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the flesh-side becoming what is called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">duchsustos<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (see Maimonides, Laws of Tefillin, Mezuzah and Sefer Torah 1:7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Leviticus Rabbah 6:3 describes Zechariah\u2019s \u201cflying scroll\u201d as having \u201cfloated\u201d in the air and comments that even the hide of an elephant or camel would not measure \u201ctwenty cubits long and ten cubits wide\u201d. As bizarre as they seem, both share a single message,\u00a0 the purification of the land of Israel. As such, this chapter can be considered a continuation of what we saw in chapter 3 \u2013 the purification of Joshua the high priest. From within the Temple to the borders of Judah, God is methodically removing the impediments that are preventing the rebuilding of the new community.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first vision is a flying scroll, which Zechariah identifies as being twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide \u2013 the exact dimensions of both the entrance to the Sanctuary (Mishkan) and the ante-chamber of the Temple. On it, a curse against those who steal and those who swear falsely. The scroll will enter the homes of the dishonest, destroying them and their houses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The angel returns with an even stranger vision, a flying tub (Hebrew \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ephah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Zechariah sees a disc of lead being lifted, revealing a woman flying in a tub. The angel identifies the woman \u2013 she is Wickedness, and he presses a leaden weight over her. Two women with long wings carry the tub to Shinar (Babylonia). While some commentators suggest that this is either the removal of sin to the exile, or a curse on the Jews who remained in Babylonia, the Talmudic rabbis saw a deeper meaning (Yoma 69b) \u2013 the annihilation of the desire to worship idols, the scourge of the Jews during the time of the First Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"And they cried out with a great voice to the Lord, God\" (Nechemiah 9:4).\u00a0 What did they say? Said Rav, \"Woe, woe. It is the [inclination for idolatry] which destroyed the Temple, burnt the Sanctuary, killed all the righteous and exiled Israel from our land, and it is still dancing among us. We want neither it nor the reward (for resisting it) \u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They sat fasting for three days and three nights, and it was handed over to them.\u00a0 It departed from the Holy of Holies as a fiery lion-cub. The prophet [Zechariah] said to Israel: \"This is the inclination for idolatry,\" as it is written, \"And he said: 'This is THE Wickedness'\" (Zech. 5:8).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[When it resisted, the rabbis asked \"What should we do?\" \u2026\u00a0 Zechariah said to them: \"Cast it into a pot of lead and close its opening with lead \u2014 for lead muffles the sound \u2014 as it is written, \"And he said: 'This is the wickedness.'\u00a0 And he cast it down into the basket, and he cast the lead weight upon its opening'\" (ibid.).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the hidden meanings between this legend, one interesting fact remains \u2013 biblical books in the Bible never condemn the Jewish people for idolatry ever again. Generally, we have to stand up to face our challenges. style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> That\u2019s how you deal with evil<\/em>. The first vision deals with evildoers wherever they are, with the curse that is written on the scroll that leads to their downfall. The second vision with its two parts seeks to root out evil throughout the land\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Size<\/em>. Scrolls are written on parchment (animal hides). The size of the scroll that Zechariah sees \u2013 about 5 by 10 meters is huge, in fact completely unrealistic in terms of what can be produced from skins. The size isn't really explained in the vision, nor the actual dimensions. There are those who point out the fact that these are the exact dimensions of the sanctuary (<em>heichal<\/em>) of the Solomon's Temple. Might there be a connection?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Ephah<\/em> and <em>tzedek<\/em> (honesty, justice). In order to solve this prophetic riddle, we need to use biblical prooftexts and contexts. The measure or tub \u2013 <em>ephah<\/em> \u2013 is often mentioned in the context of economic justice: \"You shall have an honest balance, honest weights, an honest <em>ephah<\/em>, and an honest <em>hin<\/em>\" (Lev 19:36). The <em>ephah<\/em> in the vision is the seat of evil, perhaps because cheating in weights and measures is the embodiment of evil in daily reality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> Shinar<\/em>. Shinar is the ancient name of Babylonia. Why would the permanent home of evil be built (in the vision) specifically there? Is it just to move it far away from Judah? Is it saying something about Babylonia? About the exiles in Babylonia? Or perhaps this is a story of a deep tikkun, repair? 544 chapters ago, at the dawn of human civilization, the tower of Babel was built, in \"a valley in the land of Shinar.\" As a punishment for its construction, humanity was scattered, \"from there, across the face of the earth\" (Gen. 11).
