David is in the \u201cmiddle\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the centrality of his role as progenitor of the Messiah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); Adam, Seth, and Methuselah are to his \u201cright\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier \u201cshepherds<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); Abraham, Jacob, and Moses are to his \u201cleft\u201d (<em>\"<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later shepherds\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rashi on v. 4 states that he is at a loss regarding how the Talmud arrived at these specific individuals, Maharsha, in his commentary on Talmudic Aggada, s.v. Zayin Ro\u2019im VeChulai, offers the fullest explanation:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026and they are called \u201cshepherds\u201d rather than \u201cleaders,\u201d because it is stated explicitly in connection to \u201cmost\u201d of them that they were actually shepherds in this world: David shepherded his father\u2019s flocks (I Samuel 16:11); Jacob shepherded the flocks of Laban (Genesis 31:38-40); Moses shepherded his father-in-law Yitro\u2019s flocks (Exodus 3:1); concerning Seth, it is written: (Genesis 4:25) \u201c\u2026for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel\u2026\u201d and Abel was a shepherd (Ibid. 2.) And certainly the Messiah will be greater than all of them, as it is written: (Ezekial 37:22) \u201c\u2026and one king shall be king to them all\u2026 \u201d It is therefore derived that these seven will have some authority, and they had a tradition that these seven would share responsibilities (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of leadership<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with the Messiah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this interpretation assumes the miraculous resurrection of the dead, the description of worthiness for leadership via the experience of \u201cshepherding\u201d is an extension of the following midrash (Exodus Rabba 2:2):<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026And whom does He test? The righteous individual, as it says: (Psalms 11:5) \u201cThe LORD trieth the righteous\u2026\u201d And with regard to what does He test him? With shepherding a flock. He tested David with shepherding, and found him to be a good shepherd\u2026He would hold back the more mature animals to allow the younger animals to graze first on the softer blades of grass, then he permitted the elder animals to graze on the middling blades, and finally the \u201cyoung bucks\u201d to graze on the toughest blades. Said the Holy One, Blessed Be He: Whomever knows how to allow animals belonging to another to graze each according to his own ability, he should come and \u201cshepherd\u201d My flock\u2026\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One does not ordinarily associate sensitivity to animals dependent upon you for their care, with the ability to properly lead large groups of people. Hosea likens God to a lion who will tear up the people and roar out (Hosea 5:14, 11:10, 13:7-8). Amos also uses the image to evoke fear of God (Amos 3:8, 3:12, 5:19). Micah takes this image and flips it. Unlike his predecessors, this time the lion is not used as an image of destruction or fear. The lion does not depict the enemies of the Israelites or the vengeance of God against the people. This time the lion is the people themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the people of Judah the lion is an ever present image. Judah himself is likened to a lion in Genesis 49:9 \"Judah is a lion\u2019s whelp; On prey, my son, have you grown. He crouches, lies down like a lion, Like the king of beasts\u2014who dare rouse him?\" The standard of the tribe of Judah according to many commentators includes the image of a lion. The earlier prophets deliberately use this image of a lion and twist it to become the enemy of the people. Micah, in his words of consolation, takes back the image. Though the people will be in exile, they will regain their lion strength. Should Assyria invade our land and tread upon our fortresses, we will set up over it seven shepherds, eight princes of men\u201d (5:4). First, to the meaning of the verse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud reports: \u201cWho are the seven shepherds? David is in the middle. Adam, Seth, and Methuselah are to his right, and Abraham, Jacob, and Moses are to his left. Who are the eight princes of men? Adam, Jesse, Saul, Samuel, Amos, Zephaniah, Zedekiah, the Messiah, and Elijah\u201d (Sukkah 52b). If you are unable to figure out the rationale behind these lists, you are in the company of Rashi, whose commentary to our verse reads: \u201cOur rabbis listed their names in Tractate Sukkah, but I have no idea where they obtained it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citing Ecclesiastes 11:2: \u201cDistribute portions to seven or even to eight,\u201d Ibn Ezra and Eliezer of Beaugency conclude that the numbers are imprecise. Modern scholarship calls such numbers \u201ctypological,\u201d with seven symbolizing the natural order and eight representing its transcendence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Maharsha (Shlomo Eidels, 1555-1632), in his talmudic commentary, had a theory about the shepherds:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shepherds are the leaders of a generation of whom there will be seven, with David in the middle, like the seven planets with the sun in the middle. It was said of the Davidic monarchy that it would stand \u201clike the sun\u201d and like it states explicitly above: \u201cYou, Bethlehem of Efrat\u2026 from one shall come forth to rule Israel for Me (5:1),\u201d which indicates that David will be the core of these leaders\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also pointed out that David, Jacob, and Moses were shepherds, and Seth replaced Abel who was also a shepherd.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Hanukah lights are kindled, it is customary in many homes to sing the hymn <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ma`oz Tzur<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rock of Ages), whose final stanza (according to the correct version) ends with the words: \u201cRaise up for us the seven shepherds\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hakim lanu ro`im shiv`ah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a plea for the renewal of the Davidic monarchy just as promised by Micah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: a different version of the 7 The remnant of Jacob Shall be among the nations, In the midst of the many peoples, Like a lion among beasts of the wild, Like a fierce lion among flocks of sheep, Which tramples wherever it goes And rends, with none to deliver\u201d (verses 7-8).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah now frames the choice facing the people with two stark similes. He bluntly declares that there will be a remnant \u2013 implying a previous destruction. The question is what role the survivors will play. The first simile in verse 6, compares the Jewish people to dew from heaven and raindrops that fall gently upon the grass. In the second simile in verse 7, the Jewish people are lions that rule the animals.\u00a0 Micah emphasizes the contrast by the almost identical openings. The two similes draw from ancient blessings of Israel's forefathers \u2013 Isaac blessed his children to be like dew from heaven (Gen. 27:28-29), and Jacob tribal blessing to Judah was that \"you are a lion\u2019 whelp, \u2026 you return from the prey\" (Gen. 49:9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So are the Jewish people gentle like the rain, or fierce like the lion? The two similes actually serve to complement each other, representing two views of the role of the Jewish people among the nations. The opening blessing that God gives to Abraham emphasizes that the blessing was not for him or his descendants alone, was universal in scope, extending to all of humanity that so desired it. The simile itself points towards the positive effect that the Jewish people have on humanity \u2013 dew and rain are valued not in and of themselves, but for the benefits that they bring to nature and the world.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dew is linked in the Bible to blessing and fertility (Gen. 27:28; Hos. 14:5), and the Tanakh often uses rain showers as a metaphor for either the king's presence or for Divine teachings (Deut. 32:2; Ps. 72:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The metaphor is verse 7 is that of a marauding lion. In the ancient Near East, the comparison to lions, whether of gods or kings, was a common metaphor.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah here metamorphosed the Jewish people from a defenseless and cowering sheep to a raging lion. After graphically describing how the lions seize their prey, drag it underfoot and then tear it for meat, Micah concludes that \"there will be no rescuer.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the context of the verse, Micah is referring to the nations of the world. In any case, there is a striking contradiction between the imagery of this verse and the preceding one. First, the people of Israel is figured as a gentle blessing--dew and rain--for all the nations. Now it is depicted as a furious force destroying nations. Some have tried to reconcile the contradiction temporarily: first Judah will be a militant power, then, after its victory, a beneficent presence. There aren\u2019t a lot of details here about the future ruler, not his dynasty or family - just his tribe, and that he will hail from Bethlehem. No wonder the Christians love to cite these verses regarding their savior.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>One, seven or eight?<\/em> The first prophecy in the chapter speaks of one, unique savior. The second one mentions seven shepherds, and eight princes of men. Is this referring to the Judan military staff, to a regional coalition that will bring salvation, or a chosen list of worthy leaders from Jewish history? All this and more in the notes of the commentators.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Life and death.<\/em> What will the exiled Israelites be among the nations? It seems that the prophet gives us two contradictory metaphors. One is dew, a blessing for the world, and the other is a raging lion, who harms those around him. One can find a connection in that they both include a common theme of independence. The dew drops \u201cdo not look to any man Nor place their hope in mortals\u201d (verse 6). And the strength of the lion is in his superiority, whose \u201chand shall prevail over your foes,\u201d with no submission or dependence (verse 8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Sound familiar?<\/em> Verses 9-14 in the chapter which speak about idolatry are similar in message and also in style to Isaiah 2:6-8. Isaiah and Micah were active in the same period in Judah. What was the connection between them? What did they agree on? And what did they disagree on, and who was quoting whom in their prophecies?
