This places the Prophet Micah in the 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE, in the village of Moreshet-Gat (also mentioned in verse 14, see also Jeremiah 26:18) or in the town of Mareshah (verse 15), both of which were located in Judah, southwest of Jerusalem. So, Micah may have been a village prophet decrying the spiritual and political corruption of the great cities of Samaria in the Northern Kingdom of Israel and Jerusalem in the Southern Kingdom of Judah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name \u201cMicah\u201d seems to be a shortening of the fuller name Micaiah - <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikhayah\/ Mikhayhu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning \u201cWho is like Y-H-W-H\u201d (i.e. Who can be compared to the Lord, see Exodus 15:11 \u201cWho is like you, O Lord\u2026\u201d). All of these were popular personal names in Biblical times. There are at least four separate individuals named Micah and various others named <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikhayah\/Mikhayhu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah\u2019s opening prophecy of doom on Samaria (1:2-7) concludes: \u201cSo I will turn Samaria into a ruin\u2026all her harlot\u2019s wealth be burned. And I will make a waste heap of all her idols, for they were amassed from fees for harlotry. And they shall again become harlots\u2019 fees (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etnan zonah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d (verses 6-7). This pithy expression echoes the prohibition: \u201cYou shall not bring the fee of a whore (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">etnan zonah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or the price of a dog into the house of the Lord your God in fulfillment of any vow, for both are abhorrent to the Lord your God\u201d (Deut. 23:19). Here and elsewhere (see for example Hosea 9:1) the sin of idolatry is related to the evil of prostitution.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our verse on the fee paid to a prostitute plays a key role in an elusive story related in Talmud Bavli Avodah Zarah 16b-17a and parallels. Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrkanos (1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">century CE) was accused of \u201cheresy\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minut<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but was acquitted by the presiding Roman official. Nevertheless, he was inconsolable, until his disciple, Rabbi Akiba, suggested that perhaps on some earlier occasion, Rabbi Eliezer had heard some heretical tradition, which at the time had pleased him. Rabbi Eliezer then recalls that indeed once he was asked by a disciple of \u201cJesus the Nazarene\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeshu Ha-Notzri<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the uncensored Talmud manuscripts), if the \u201chire of a harlot\u201d, which may not be brought into the Temple, may be used for making a privy for the High Priest? For \u201cJesus the Nazarene\u201d taught: \u201cFor they were amassed from fees for harlotry. And they shall become harlots\u2019 fees again\u201d (Micah 1:7) \u2013 they came from a place of filth, let them go to a place of filth. Rabbi Eliezer then recalled that this heretical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>midrash halakhah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had at the time pleased him. Indeed, the historical data at the opening of the Book of Micah is unique in placing Samaria before Judah. The fact that the opening verses of Hosea and Amos mention the king of Samaria, Jeroboam ben Joash, by name, while here no Samarian king is named, indicates that by the time Micah began to prophesy Jeroboam II was deceased, and the failure to name his\u00a0 successor may even be a backhanded compliment to him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud teaches: \u201cOne style may be shared by several prophets, but no two prophets use the identical style\u201d (Sanhedrin 89a). The literary similarities among prophets of different eras are usually treated as instances of borrowing by the later from the earlier; similarities among contemporary prophets would appear to support the contention that they had their respective ears attuned to current usage on which they capitalized for maximum effect. One might even surmise that this familiarity, and, hence, effectiveness, accounted for their prophetic selection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah\u2019s home, Moreshet, on account of which he is designated \u201cthe Morashtite\u201d (1:1), and to which the prophet himself referred later as \u201cMoreshet Gath\u201d (14), is identified by archaeologists with Tel al-Judayda, south of Beit Guvrin (southwest of Jerusalem), and should not be confused with the similar sounding\u2014and geographically proximate\u2014\u201cMaresha,\u201d which is mentioned in the very next verse (15).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, vs. 10-15 are chock full of word plays, largely on place Jeremiah was almost lynched; instead, he was put on trial for blasphemy. During the proceedings, the elders reminded the people that Micah also uttered sacrilegious words a century before during Hezekiah's reign. He was the first prophet who dared to utter what had never yet been said \u2013should the people not mend their ways, God would not hesitate to destroy Jerusalem and the Temple. However, Micah not only avoided death, but he also managed to persuade the populace to change, averting disaster and saving Jerusalem from ruin.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah lived during tumultuous times. During the second half of the eighth century BCE, Judah fell dazzlingly quickly from the heights of political power and prosperity to the depths of poverty and powerlessness. By the end, only the fortified city of Jerusalem survived among hilltops charred with the burnt remains where villages and towns once stood. Micah likely witnessed the three major traumatic events that afflicted Judah during the closing three decades of the eighth century BCE:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the Syro-Ephraimite war in 734-2 BCE, which saw the two kingdoms to the north pillage Judah;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, the fall of the Northern Kingdom to Assyria in 722-1 B.C.E, with the resulting displacement of many refugees to the south;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally when Hezekiah chose to take advantage of Sargon's sudden death in 705 BCE to stop paying tribute to Assyria.\u00a0 Sennacherib's forces would arrive within a few short years \u2013 unleashing a deadly invasion that left dozens of cities ruined and tens of thousands sent to exile.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How was Micah successful in convincing the Jewish people to listen, when other prophets (including his contemporary the great Isaiah) failed? The text doesn't tell us specifically, but the endings of the two prophecies in chapter 1 hint towards a clue. Micah describes the eventual downfalls of both Samaria and Jerusalem \u2013 and both end with a specific image. Decreeing the destruction of the northern kingdom, Micah\u00a0 shares with us his reaction to the Divine judgment \u2013 he will wail and cry, approach insanity, and walk around in a state of undress. While some may not be comfortable with the image of a prophet going naked, we\u00a0 imagine Micah himself walking alongside the chained and fettered rows of captives, crying with them, wishing to share their burdens and their sufferings, as they leave behind the land of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His lament for Judah concludes with a similar act of identification, calling to an unknown mother (likely Jerusalem) to pull out their hair in mourning for her precious children who have disappeared. Symbolically - hair growth is characteristic of living persons, so removing the hair allows the mourner to identify with the dead. Micah prophesied in the second half of the 8th C. BCE. in this chapter we can hear the history in the background: the destruction of Samaria in the year 720 BCE and the Sennecharib\u2019s campaign to Judah in the year 701. It was an Assyrian campaign to conquer the region, and led to the destruction of a number of Judan cities, and reached Jerusalem - but that city was saved.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Which Micah are you<\/em>? Micah was a pretty common name in Biblical times: in the entire Tanach there are 12 people with this name. One of them - another prophet - was Micaiah son of Imlah. He was \u201ca true prophet\u201d from the days of Ahab who prophesied regarding the expected defeat in the war of Ramoth-gilead (see I Kings 22).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Destruction and cult<\/em>. Micah\u2019s prophecies don\u2019t spell out what is the guilt of Samaria and what are the sins of Judah, but we get a glimpse of the status of the cult in the kingdoms. Verse 7 tells at length about the destruction of the cult of Samaria - \u201cAll her sculptured images shall be smashed, And all her harlot\u2019s wealth be burned, And I will make a waste heap of all her idols\u201d -
