And thus spoke Joel, the son of Petuel: \"Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruning hooks into spears\" (4:10). Joel and Isaiah. Two images. Two prophets. Two periods. Two melodies. Contradictory? Complementary? One thing is clear: they are talking to each other.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Isaiah is one of the most influential prophets in the history of Israelite prophecy; Joel less so. Joel is also more puzzling from a historical point of view. But this dialogue of theirs, whether it is theirs or whether the biblical editor created it, affords us the readers a moment of reflection on the end times.<\/span><\/p>\r\n We can imagine the two different workshops. Both of them have ironmongers and blacksmiths, wrapped in leather aprons, making tools out of other tools. One group is taking swords and making work implements; joyously, I would hope. The other, working more quietly, with serious faces and furrowed brows, are taking the tools for harvesting and are making of them weapons of destruction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Which do you prefer? It should be clear, no? Between war and peace, isn't peace preferable?<\/span><\/p>\r\n Yes \u2013 peace is preferable. But precisely because of that, it's not clear which of the two pictures is more appropriate. \"One who wants peace should prepare for war,\" the 4<\/span>th<\/span> century Roman sage Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus taught us. And it's no wonder that Israeli army commanders throughout the generations found this slogan fitting to decorate the walls of army training bases throughout the country. This of course fits in with what we have learned from the elderly Kohelet: \"A time for weeping, a time for laughing\u2026 a time for war and a time for peace.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n And here, even though neither of these pictures is absolutely more worthy, since everything is dependent on context and time, I feel that it is imperative that we promote Isaiah's vision, and push Joel to the background. War can be a necessity, at times indispensable; at times there is nothing more just or moral; we must be ready for it, ready to give our lives, otherwise these are all empty words. But there is no glory on the fields of slaughter. War is never an end in itself. It is evil even if its results are good.<\/span><\/p>\r\n In my opinion, this is the daily complexity of those engaged in the act of defending the State of Israel. The IDF is the blacksmith in both pictures. It spills the blood of people, and it also defends them. It must prepare tools of war, train its soldiers to use them, engage in combat, win battles, but since it is dealing with human beings \u2013 its own people and the people on the other side of the rifle sights \u2013 it must realize that not only the spear, but also the pruning hook possesses power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The prophets Joel and Isaiah have given us the building blocks. God will inspire them to gather for the attack in the Valley of Jehoshaphat\u2014either an actual place, named for that Judean king, or a symbolic place of divine judgment\u2014where they will be routed. That day will be known as \u201cthe great and awesome day of the Lord\u201d on which extraordinary portents will appear on earth and in heaven (see Chapter 3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n In his description of the Israelite repulse of the intended attack, Joel, whose detailed descriptions of the plagues of locusts bespeak a familiarity with agricultural matters, said: \u201cBeat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning-hooks into spears\u201d (4:10). This phrase is well-known to us in its converse (either from Isaiah 2:4, Micah 4:3, or, for that matter, from the \u201cIsaiah Wall\u201d adjacent to the United Nations building in New York): \u201cThey shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The question is: Who\u2019s reversing whom?<\/span><\/p>\r\n In Radak\u2019s opinion, Joel came first: \u201cAll metal implements will be recycled into weapons of war on account of the magnitude of this battle. In the time of peace that will follow, Isaiah prophesied, to the contrary, that: \u201cThey will beat their swords into plowshares\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Recalling <\/span>our earlier discussion <\/span><\/a>about Joel\u2019s correct historical placement, this could be taken as an indication that Radak dated Joel to the time of King Jehoram son of Ahab. The alternative view is as a contemporary of Nahum and Habakkuk, which would place him during the reign of King Manasseh, later than Isaiah whose prophetic career extended only through Hezekiah, Manasseh\u2019s father.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The concluding verse of this chapter (and of the book), although well-known from the Shabbat morning liturgy (<\/span>av harachamim<\/span><\/em>), has also been subjected to various interpretations. The JPS translation reads: \u201cThus I will treat as innocent (<\/span>niqeiti<\/span><\/em>) their blood which I have not treated as innocent (<\/span>lo niqeiti<\/span><\/em>); and the LORD shall dwell in Zion\u201d (4:21). Rashi interpreted this to mean that even if God would overlook many of Edom\u2019s sins, He would never clear them of the guilt associated with the Judean blood they shed. In 3:4 \" the sun will turn to darkness and the moon blood red\" and in Joel 4:15 \"the sun and the moon have become blackened and the stars have withdrawn their shine.\u201d The double usage of this metaphor may most likely indicate that around the time of Joel's prophecy there was a blood moon and a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n However, there is another symbolic reason for using these metaphors. The sun and moon and stars appear in one of Joseph's early dreams. in Genesis chapter 37: \"I have dreamed another dream\u00a0 behold the sun, the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.\" The celestial bodies represent Jacob, Rachel and the sons of Jacob. Joel's image therefore takes an even darker turn.
