The statue he saw was complete: there was a rider\u2014the deity\u2014seated on his mount\u2014the calf.\u00a0 The calves in our Bible are always incomplete, never seen with their rider.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we see the golden calf anew: When Aaron points to the golden calf and says, \u201cThese are your God O Israel\u201d, he means that this was the mount for God, whom the people were asked to visualize in their minds\u2019 eye, so as to reassure themselves of God\u2019s continuing presence in their midst. It was a blending of the material calf with the immaterial God to assist a people unused to the notion of God. Likewise, when Jeroboam erected statues of calves in his temples, it was as an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aide memoire <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so the people could recall the God who led them through the desert.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to conceptualize this, it helps to think of the funeral for JFK which I witnessed on TV. A riderless horse was placed in the procession, saddled, with boots inverted in the stirrups. This had a tremendous visceral effect on the onlooker, not because the horse was an object of veneration, but because the tableau was completed in the mind of the viewer: we saw once again the slain leader.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This blending of the material with the immaterial is what the temple and its offerings were all about. But Hosea was awake to the dangers this could cause. We recall that Ezekiel had glimpsed idolatrous goings-on in the very heart of the temple! This was blasphemous, but not antithetical. Hosea has concluded that the very idea of a temple is conducive to the \u201ccalf fallacy.\u201d This is what he means when he concludes:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor the paths of the LORD are smooth; The righteous can walk on them, While sinners stumble on them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the purest of heart can withstand the dangers of a Temple. Now, Hosea says, it is time for the Jewish people to graduate to a purer form of worship, as befits their maturity. In this passage Hosea is prophesying about the path to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teshuva<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> - repentance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of words in the act of repentance is evident in the language of these verses. \u201cTake <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">words<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with you and return to God (14:3)\u201d; \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Him, forgive our iniquities and accept our good, and let our <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lips<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> substitute for our offerings (14:4).\u201d Malbim describes a process of repentance, that begins with regretting one\u2019s misdeeds. During the ten days of repentance before Yom Kippur, we speak aloud to those we have wronged and ask their forgiveness. It\u2019s not enough to simply decide for oneself a path to repentance, we need to verbalize it and share it. Malbim continues that we then use words again to identify those things that stand in our merit and ask God to judge us on those merits. <em>Teshuva <\/em>is not about self-flagellation, it\u2019s about self-awareness - of our good acts and our bad. Finally, it is in our words, not in our physical offerings (which had gone so wrong in the days leading up to this moment), that we ask for redemption.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the opening of this chapter the root of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>teshuva<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is used two ways: \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shuva Yisrael<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (14:2) uses the singular, addressing the nation as a unit, while \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shuvu <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(14:3), in the plural, considers all of the individuals that comprise the nation. Rabbi Steven Sirbu offers this explanation: \u201cOne\u2019s sins (and I might add, good deeds) have ramifications that affect the community, and a nation\u2019s sins impact every individual. It is impossible to fully separate individual and communal culpability and repentance.\u201d So, self-realization, acknowledgement of our deeds (both bad and good) and commitment to repentance are both an individual and a national endeavor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is power in the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teshuva<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself. It does not mean atonement, nor repentance. It literally means to return. You can only return to a place you once were. The images of a regrowth of the northern tribes and a return to God provide a beautiful ending to what is at times a very tragic book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 9 takes a theme that we have seen before and creates a beautiful image. In the previous major prophetic books and in the book of Kings, there is usually a call to smash the idols, and remove them from the houses, burn them in the fields, etc.\u00a0 One could even imagine an anti-idol squad traveling through the land seizing molten images, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Ashera<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trees, and altars from the houses of the inhabitants. As we saw with King Josiah, oftentimes these idol seizures were not voluntary. The people were not turning away from idolatry willingly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosea sees this reformation differently. In Hosea\u2019s final vision the people do not merely turn in their idols, or even reject idolatry.\u00a0 Instead, according to the prophet, the people decide \u201cWhat more have I to do with idols?\u201d (verse 9). Hosea calls, \u201cReturn, O Israel, to the Lord your God,\u201d and the appeal seems to succeed, for God answers, \u201cI will take them back in love, for my anger is turned away from them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is not the first time in this story that Israel has tried to return to God. Twice in the book, Israel attempts to repent \u2013 in chapters 6 and 14. It is fascinating to compare them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 6 opens: \u201cCome, let us turn back to the LORD: He attacked, and He can heal us\u2026 we shall be whole by His favor\u2026 His appearance is as sure as daybreak, And He will come to us like rain, Like latter rain that refreshes the earth\u201d (6:1-3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel expects that if she returns to God, God will return to her overnight. Like a rainstorm, bringing rivulets of reviving water running over the parched land, filling up cracked cisterns; so too, they expect that God will flood His people with renewed love.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To which, the prophet laments that God does not work like that. \u201cWhat can I do for you, Ephraim, What can I do for you, Judah, When your goodness is like morning clouds, Like dew so early gone? \u2026 For I desire goodness, not sacrifice; Obedience to God, rather than burnt offerings\u201d (6:4-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wants enduring love and lasting commitment, not fleeting gifts. Israel\u2019s superficial change of heart is not the faithfulness that God seeks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our chapter, by contrast, Israel repents again, and this time their contrition is accepted: \u201cReturn, O Israel, to the LORD your God, For you have fallen because of your sin. Take words with you And return to the LORD. Say to Him: \u201cForgive all guilt And accept what is good\u2026 I will heal their affliction, Generously will I take them back in love; For My anger has turned away from them. I will be to Israel like dew\u201d (14:2-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, their contrition is accepted. Israel returns with words, not sacrifices; she vows to forsake her paramour idols and commit to exclusivity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel\u2019s first, failed effort at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Teshuvah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was an attempt to have with God the kind of intermittent ecstatic relationship, likened to rain, that she had enjoyed with the lovers of the early part of the book. God subtly corrects the people: \u201cYou think you desire a relationship with me full of the passion, uncertainty and excitement, that you know from idolatry? The prophet tells the people (v.2): \u201c\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1\u05d4, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shuva<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Return!\u201d He doesn\u2019t say, \u201cGod will bring you back\u201d; he says, \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> return, bring yourselves back!\u201d He then tells them how to: \u201ctake words with you\u201d (v.3). Don\u2019t bring sacrifices, don\u2019t bring gifts: the first step is admitting you have a problem, is being prepared to admit your guilt, to bring that admission to God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step is putting their faith totally in God. Once they have done this, we reach the final step: God takes them back. The profundity and completeness of this final step is startling. These people, who have for generations sinned, have for generations worshiped false gods and abused the vulnerable, will not only be accepted again by God, but will be taken back completely and healed with love! The result of assuaging God\u2019s anger is not, like it might be with a human being, a gradual process of renewing a relationship. The result of assuaging God\u2019s anger is immediate and complete love.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophet paints a magnificent picture of the flowering of Israel under the care of God\u2019s love. It is a picture of beauty and strength, blossoms and roots, prosperity and health. The prophet concludes this image by telling us that Israel\u2019s healing will heal others. Our own healing, our own repentance, can help bring about the healing and repentance of others.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it all starts with admitting you have a problem. Hosea, like so many of the prophets, has begged and pleaded with his people to be introspective, to look critically at themselves and their society and see the corruption and flaws within. Hosea knows that people cannot change until they can see that they need to, and that\u2019s why the first step is so important. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shuva<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">return, he says, not just to God, but to yourselves.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book concludes by telling us that,\u201c\u2018\u05db\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05be\u05d9\u05b0\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d3\u05bc\u05b7\u05e8\u05b0\u05db\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u201d, the paths of God are <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yesharim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (v.10). The root \u05d9.\u05e9.\u05e8, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y-sh-r<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means rightness and righteousness, but also straight and level. The path may be right, but it is not necessarily easy. The JPS translation captures this by translating \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd <em>yesharim,\u00a0<\/em>as \u201csmooth\u201d: the path may be straight and level, but smooth can be slippery, icy, treacherous. The righteous walk on it, and sinners stumble, concludes the book. Here, Hosea's message should have ended \u2013 yet Hosea continues with another nine verses, hoping against hope that the people will finally heed his message and repent before the final calamity befalls them. But not only is he hopeful \u2013 he tells them what they have to do:\u00a0 \u201cTake words with you And return to the LORD. Say to Him: \u201cForgive all guilt And accept what is good; Instead of bulls we will pay [The offering of] our lips. Assyria shall not save us...Nor ever again will we call Our handiwork our god, Since in You alone orphans find pity!\u201d Even if they only recite these words, promises Hosea, then God will \"love them freely.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish tradition has identified this chapter as the <em>haftarah<\/em> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shabbat Shuvah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 the Shabbat during the Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We would have expected the reading of choice to be inspiring, uplifting. Yet that is not the case \u2013 instead we are confronted with the lowest level of repentance. What are the people confessing? Not that their sins were wrong or that they regret them \u2013 just that they didn't work out. Had Assyria come to their aid, they would not acknowledge any error on their part. They are the proverbial thief brought before the parole board, who when asked whether he has used his time in incarceration to ponder his actions and reflect, answers that \"Next time, I will wear quieter shoes\".<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Israel that Hosea speaks to hasn't changed from the beginning of the book. In chapter 2, the prophet states about Ephraim that \u201cPursue her lovers as she will, She shall not overtake them\u2026 Then she will say, \u201cI will go and return To my first husband, For then I fared better than now.\u201d Again, what motivates Israel\u2019s return \u2013 not love and commitment, but the purely mercenary evaluation that it was better for them to return to God than not to return.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this cold calculation not a form of hypocrisy, that cheapens the meaning of true repentance? Rav Moshe Lichtenstein answers this with the following parable.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine a child who leaves his house because of tensions between him and his parents, proclaiming that he will never need their kindness, never take any money from them, and perhaps never even speak to them.\u00a0 But things don't work out, and after a period of privation, he knocks on the door, ashamed, and asks to come home. Say to Him: \u201cForgive all guilt and accept what is good (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); instead of bulls we will pay [the offering of] our lips\u201d (14:3). This verse is cited in Talmudic discussions as evidence that Jewish prayer is, primarily, a substitute for sacrifice (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/506\/post\/76183\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see our comments on Hosea Chapter 6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One phrase in it, however, has wide ranging implications for the consideration of what is, arguably, the most central part of the daily liturgy, the Amidah (\u201cthe standing prayer\u201d), colloquially known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shemoneh Esrei<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(literally: \u201c18\u201d), on account of the 18 blessings it ostensibly contains.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone conversant with this prayer knows that it really numbers 19 blessings; that there were originally 18, until a 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blessing (against the heretics -\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was added later. There is, however, an alternate scenario, attested to by both a Midrashic passage and the evidence of the Cairo Genizah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Bemidbar Rabbah (Korach 18:21), states:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel said: Master of the universe, when the Temple stood, we would bring sacrifices and receive atonement. Now, we are left with only prayer. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [the \u201cgood\u201d of 14:3] adds up alphanumerically to 17; [but] the [Amidah] prayer has 19 blessings? Subtract the blessing against the heretics, which was instituted at Yavneh, and \u201cthe flowering (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzemach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of David,\u201d which was instituted after that.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the Amidah originally consisted of only 17 blessings (corresponding to the numerical value of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to which two blessings were added later, bringing the total first to 18\u2014hence the sobriquet Shemoneh Esrei\u2014and later yet to 19. Liturgical texts, such as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">siddurim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prayer books, retrieved from the Cairo Genizah provide evidence that as late as the High Middle Ages, Jews who followed the rites of Eretz Yisrael, even if they were living in Egypt, had only 18 blessings in their Amidah, combining the adjacent blessings of rebuilding Jerusalem and the flowering of David into one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Babylonian rite, on the other hand, split these in two\u2014probably in honor of the Babylonian Exilarch, who was a descendant of King David\u2014thereby yielding the 19 blessing format that is universal For straight are the ways of the LORD, and the righteous shall walk on them, but rebels shall stumble on them.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The language of this concluding verse is entirely constituted of formulas from Wisdom literature. The prophecy is structured as a dialogue between the people and their God. This isn\u2019t just a literary conceit, it is the heart of the matter. After a long and difficult history of being cut off, the speech and mutual interaction are the keys to intimacy and repentance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Important protocol.<\/em> How does one repent, \u201cdo <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teshuvah\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? This chapter is the basis for the \u201cteshuvah protocol\u201d that Rambam formulates in his Laws of Teshuvah, which include: ceasing to sin, committing to not sinning in the future, regret, confession, and avoiding repeating the sin (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Mishneh_Torah%2C_Repentance.2?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hilchot Teschuvah, 2:2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shabbat (t)shuva<\/em>. The prophecy calls the listener to repentance (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teshuvah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and promises an opportunity for love, and is read in synagogues as the haftarah on the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the height of the ten days of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teshuvah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, repentance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Have a word, not a cow.<\/em> The phrase \u201cInstead of bulls we will pay [The offering of] our lips\u201d (verse 3) has been interpreted to mean that prayer, the service of the heart, replaces the bulls, the service of sacrifice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The blessing of dew<\/em>. Twice previously in Hosea (chs. 6 and 13), \u201cdew\u201d was a negative image for superficial or unserious behavior by the people. Verse 6 here redeems that image, and the situation, seeing dew as a positive blessing: \u201cI will be to Israel like dew; He shall blossom like the lily, He shall strike root like a Lebanon tree.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Chazak<\/em> - May we be strong and strengthened.
