Verse 4 brackets Jacob’s life by two pivotal struggles, beginning in the womb where “he tried to supplant his brother,” and ending when “he strove with a divine being.” The root for “supplant” (ekev) relates to the name Jacob- to hold back or to deceive- while wrestling with the angel results in a name change to Israel, signifying dramatic character transformation between the two.

Hosea inserts the significant detail that one of the combatants “wept and implored” the other. The Talmud resolves its inherent ambiguity as to which one is doing the pleading in favor of the angel (Hullin 92a). Another rabbinic interpretation suggestively identifies the angel as a representative of Jacob’s brother Esau. In light of its narrative positioning immediately before Jacob’s reunion with Esau after decades of separation, combined with Maimonides’ rule that all divine and angelic appearances in the Bible are dreams or visions, we are confronted with a Freudian moment.

Jacob’s consciousness is plagued by unresolved tensions related to sibling rivalry. The angel’s cry to be released from Jacob’s grip resonates with Esau’s agonizing cry when he discovered his brother had stolen his blessing, while the angel’s imploring signifies Esau’s legitimate plea for its return. In the dream Jacob negotiates the angel’s release in exchange for a blessing, reflecting a deep-seated guilt over his original exchange with Esau whose distress Jacob exploited to acquire Esau’s birthright. The angel’s crying and pleading supply the necessary ingredients that Jacob subconsciously assimilates in his dream. It evokes a moral awakening, which attuned Jacob to Esau’s suffering which he ignored previously, in order to resolve his guilt over wronging his brother.

That resolution in Jacob’s subconscious then materializes in his following encounter with Esau. Esau rushes toward Jacob, emotionally embracing, kissing, and crying together (Gen 33:4). Jacob then incorporates twice in his dialogue with Esau the Hebrew root for imploring (chanan), in the grammatical form of ‘showing favor’ (hitpa'el), signifying an obliging response to imploring. Most importantly, he insists that Esau accept the ‘blessing’ he offers “for God has favored (chanani) me and I have plenty” (33:11). That angelic pleading in Jacob’s consciousness compelled him to admit he owed Esau compensation for his deceitful acquisition of a blessing rightfully due to Esau. He was now willing to share with Esau the divine ‘favoring’ he enjoyed from the fruit of that blessing.

This elucidates Hosea’s puzzling reference to this episode. The chapter begins accusing Ephraim and Israel of treachery and deceit. Hosea then reminds Israel of the moment Jacob’s name was changed to Israel provoked by guilt over a deceitful past. Jacob’s listening to another’s cries and pleas led to reconciliation with the victim of his deceit. Recalling this incident is an appeal to return to the original ideal represented by the name Israel as overcoming a deceitful disposition.

image: It is an inner struggle in which wily Jacob tries to justify, or at least get away with, “get rich quick schemes” using false measures and shady deals. God will have none of that. The God of Israel indeed insists on cultic loyalty. Faithfulness to God is a necessary condition, but it is not sufficient. Returning to God means practicing goodness and justice. Long-term well-being comes from trusting in God. There are no shortcuts, and Jacob cannot defeat God or escape his responsibility.

When he understands that, his opponent changes. In chapters 9 and 10, Hosea mentioned the idolatry of Ba'al Pe'or from Numbers, and the rape of the concubine in Gibeah at the end of the book of Judges. In chapter 12 and 13, Hosea draws heavily from the book of Genesis to castigate the people, specifically the life of the patriarch Jacob.

The chapter revolves around a single theme - faithfulness. The rebuke centers on Ephraim's unfaithfulness to God (which is contrasted with Judah's faithfulness). The reproach over the northern kingdom's idolatry is not due to the licentious behavior that accompanied ancient idolatry, but to the northern kingdom's lack of fidelity and their display of ingratitude towards God.

The claim is not that Judah is perfect, indeed, Hosea notes that "according to his deeds He shall recompense him." However, Ephraim "tends the wind And pursues the gale; He is forever adding Illusion to calamity. Hosea demonstrates that Ephraim's lack of faithfulness and constancy to God is reflected in their political alignments as well. When the people think that a pact with Assyria will be beneficial, they support them; if Egypt's offer is more tempting, they abandon Assyria in favor of Egypt. In Rabbi Mosheh Lichtenstein's formulation, they prefer "short-term utilitarianism over long-term commitment".

Hosea contrasts their flightiness with the constancy and fidelity demonstrated by Jacob in Aram. This quality finds expression from the very beginning, when he falls in love with Rachel and asks to marry her, despite all the difficulties he faced.
