In the midst of this prophecy of impending doom, Hosea urges his fellow Israelites: “Sow righteousness (tzedaqah) for yourselves! Reap the fruit of goodness (chesed). And break up your unplowed ground! For it is time to seek the Lord, until He comes and showers His righteousness on you” (Hosea 10:12).

Bavli Sukkah 49b derives from this verse a fundamental principle of righteous behavior. Rabbi Eleazar stated that “acts of righteousness” (gemilut chasadim) are greater than charity (tzedaqah), for it says: “Sow righteousness (tzedaqah) for yourselves! Reap the fruit of goodness (chesed).” When one sows, it is doubtful whether he will eat [the harvest] or not. But when one already reaps, he will certainly eat. Rabbi Eleazar further learned from the same verse that the reward for charity (tzedaqah) depends entirely upon the intent of such an act of righteousness (chesed, here “loving intention”) in it, for it says: “Sow righteousness (tzedaqah) for yourselves! Reap the fruit of goodness (chesed).”

Our Rabbis added that there are three ways in which “acts of righteousness” (gemilut chasadim) are superior to charity. For charity can be done only with one's money, but “acts of righteousness” can be done with both one's person and one's money. Charity is only given to the poor, but “acts of righteousness” can be performed both for the rich and the poor. Charity can be given only to the living. But “acts of righteousness” can be performed both for the living (e.g. by rejoicing with the bride and groom) and to the dead (by attending to the funeral and burial of the deceased).

Midrash Tehillim 30:4 applies Hosea’s prophecy to the relationship between two of the principle aspects of God’s nature. God’s “punishing aspect” is sterile (i.e. it does not “bear fruit”). But God’s “rewarding aspect” does bear fruit. As it says: “Sow righteousness (tzedaqah) for yourselves! Reap the fruit of goodness (chesed).” This implies that the Holy One, blessed be He, exacts from Man according to his transgressions, but then returns and grants Man his just reward.

Midrash Tehillim 65:4 also preserves an exchange between two Rabbinic Sages focused on the interpretation of our verse in Hosea. Ben-Azzai asserted that whoever performs “acts of righteousness” may be assured that his prayers will be answered. For it says: “Sow righteousness for yourselves! Reap the fruit of goodness.” Rabbi Akivah replied: I do not wish to contradict the teaching of my teacher but rather add to his words by comparing two other verses: “And I, in the greatness of Your goodness (be-rov chasdekhah) will come into Your House” (Psalms 5:8) and “As for me, may my prayer come to You, O Lord, at a favorable moment.
