He looks to the sky, and sees a vulture leisurely circling, waiting for the opportune moment to swoop down and carry off its dinner. He mentions that the target is "the house of God", which caused some questions among the commentators because though Hosea's main audience is the northern kingdom (as seen is verses 5 and 6, where he lambasts them for relying on the golden calves they built in Dan and Beit El), the house of God, the Temple, is located in the southern kingdom, in Jerusalem.

The simple understanding is that Hosea generally uses the phrase "the house of God" to describe the land of Israel (9:8, 9:15). Abrabanel maintains the simple meaning of the words, but interprets Hosea as speaking about Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians, who invaded Judah in 586 BCE and destroyed the Temple.

However, the commentators find different ways to understand the opening command. According to Rashi, God is speaking to Hosea, telling him that he should raise his voice like a shofar and direct his words to the enemies of the Jewish nation, and proclaim to them in God's name, "Hurry! Fly like an eagle and swoop down upon God's house!" Others (Ibn Ezra, Malbim) suggest that the eagle in the phrase refers to Hosea himself. He should fly up to the Temple Mount where he should admonish the Jewish people for their transgressions.

However, the main theme is Hosea's explanation for the impending disaster. "Because they have transgressed My covenant And been faithless to My teaching" (verse 1). God declares that the Jewish people have broken their mutual covenant, due to Israel's unfaithfulness and turning to other gods. While the majority of commentators view the word Torah as equivalent to the Covenant, Alshich interprets it as specifically referring to Torah study, based on a fascinating statement in the Jerusalem Talmud that God is so patient and forgiving that he is willing to countenance even the violations of the cardinal sins of murder, idolatry, and adultery. However, when Torah study is stopped, then the chance of the Jewish people improving has disappeared. Everything else that Hosea lists in the rest of the chapter, the political instability and the idolatry, remains secondary to this failure.

image: Blowing Shofar, Forli Siddur (Italian rite), 1383, British Library, public domain

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos8-shofar.jpg","1536x1536-width":567,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos8-shofar.jpg","2048x2048-width":567,"2048x2048-height":1024
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos8-shofar.jpg","1536x1536-width":567,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos8-shofar.jpg","2048x2048-width":567,"2048x2048-height":1024
Is an Ox a God?
