During this short period, six kings reigned (some likely simultaneously), murder and coups were common, and the country changed its foreign policy frequently, desperately grasping for some way to avoid ultimately being annexed by the growing neo-Assyrian empire. To describe this chaos, Hosea uses two allegories – an overheated oven and a foolish dove.

In the first half of the chapter, Hosea describes Israel's political climate as an overheated oven – "For they approach their ambush With their hearts like an oven: Through the night Their baker has slept; In the morning, it flares up Like a blazing fire" (v. 6). Despite all their planning, they have waited too long to act. Now, everything rages out of control, without anyone in charge - "They all get heated like an oven And devour their rulers— None of them calls to Me. All their kings have fallen..." (v. 7). Hosea concludes by comparing Ephraim to a cake that has not yet been turned over. Like a loaf of bread left in the oven so long that one side is burnt yet the other side is still raw, Israel is not a viable entity anymore. The only logical fate for the country is to be disposed of.

In what is perhaps Hosea's most picturesque metaphor, he states that Israel "was like a silly dove with no mind." Like a foolish bird that could not decide what it wanted to do, flitting aimlessly back and forth between two points, Israel couldn’t decide whether it wished to ally itself with Assyria, or make a treaty with Egypt. It would go to one, but at some point, when the arrangement seemed too oppressive, it would leave for the other. In doing so, they would replace the leader who had tied his political fortunes with the success of his agreement with the superpower, only to be replaced (and murdered) when the country changed its mind again.

Radak is more forgiving of Israel's behavior in the metaphor. He suggests that each of the superpowers, Egypt and Assyria, would try to entice smaller nations around them with bribes and promises, in the same way that bird hunters would lay out plates of tasty seeds for the birds to snack on, until they being accustomed to coming to the particular point without fear and become easy to ensnare. He interprets “foolish” as naïve, being too trusting. Rashi, however, suggests that the foolishness is a level of stupidity that is self-damaging. Israel behaved like a bird who returned to its nest repeatedly, even if it found its chicks missing. Similarly, Israel continually made alliances with Egypt and Assyria, even though they had been constantly betrayed in the past by the two great powers.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos7-dove2.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":975,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos7-dove2.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1219
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos7-dove2.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":975,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos7-dove2.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1219
Rabbi Yoel Bin Nun, PhD. is a religious Zionist rabbi who was among the founders of Yeshivat Har Etzion and who emphasized the importance of the study of Tanach, and not just Talmud, in yeshiva.
