Although He has the capacity \u201cto heal\u201d and \u201cto bind\u201d (2), and although the people express their intent \u201cto pursue obedience to the Lord\u201d (3), the goodness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) they display is as transient \u201cas morning clouds\u201d and as short-lived \u201cas morning dew\u201d (4). \u201cFor I desire goodness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), not sacrifice,\u201d says God, \u201cobedience\u2026 rather than burnt offerings\u201d (6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This last verse has often been cited in the argument that the sacrificial order will not be renewed in a rebuilt Temple with the concomitant elimination of that order from the present liturgy. However, when seen in the context of similar prophetic declarations, it appears to be an expression of preference (God desires goodness <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sacrifice) rather than total rejection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first such declaration was made by Samuel. After King Saul disobeyed his instructions to destroy Amalekite sheep and cattle, he attempted to justify his disobedience by claiming that they had been spared for the purpose of sacrifice. Samuel\u2019s retort was: \u201cDoes the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obedience to the Lord\u2019s command? Surely obedience is better than sacrifice, compliance than the fat of rams\u201d (1 Samuel 15:22).\u00a0 There is clearly no complete rejection of sacrifice, just the observation that it takes a backseat to obedience.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar declaration was made by Jeremiah. In condemning those who sought sanctuary in the Temple while continuing their perverse ways, he stated: \u201cFor when I freed your fathers from the land of Egypt, I did not speak with them or command them concerning burnt offerings or sacrifice. But this is what I commanded them: Do My bidding, that I may be your God and you may be My people; walk only in the way that I enjoin upon you, that it may go well with you\u201d (7:22-23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambivalence over the ritual of sacrifice is further reflected in the contradictory positions taken by Maimonides. In the Guide (3:32), he explained sacrifice as a way to sublimate the desire to serve God materially, implying that they have no intrinsic value and would, eventually, be replaced with a purely intellectual form of worship. In their distress, they will seek Me and beg for My favor. \u2018Come, let us turn back to the LORD: He attacked, and He can heal us; He wounded, and He can bind us up.\u2019\u201d (Hosea 5:15-6:1)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the prediction of punishment and promise of repentance use the word \u201cattack.\u201d However, a more literal translation of the Hebrew <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taraf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0would be \u201ctear\/torn.\u201d It is usually used to describe animals tearing up their prey. An animal whose flesh was torn by beasts in the field is a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terefah<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Exodus 22:30). In Talmudic Hebrew the meaning of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">terefah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was extended to mean \"a clean animal inflicted with an organic defect, a mortal injury, or a fatal disease.\u201d Later, the term expanded to include all non-kosher food, and this eventually led to the Yiddish <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treif<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can mean anything not \"kosher\", even non-food items.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are also verses (like Psalms 111:5 and Proverbs 31:15), where <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0means food in general. It probably originally meant \u201cfood carried off\u201d, and then became simply \u201cfood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taraf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0diverged from its original meaning doesn\u2019t involve food. From \u201cto tear away\u201d it came to also mean \u201cto mix, confuse.\u201d A person who is mixed up, disturbed, confused is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metoraf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0- which in Modern Hebrew means \"insane\". And just as in English, where the word \"mad\" means insane, but \"like mad\" means \"with excitement or enthusiasm\", so too does <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metoraf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0mean in Israeli slang not only \"crazy\", but \"excited, exceptional, unbelievable\" and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b'teruf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0means \"with excitement.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the ultimate disaster that befell both kingdoms, it would certainly be <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metoraf<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to think that they would ever return. Is it through blind obedience, through extensive study, through philosophical evaluation, or some combination of all three?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about the well-known passage from Exodus 24:7 when the Jewish people accepted the covenant with God at Mount Sinai with the words, \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">na\u2019aseh<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we will do, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">v\u2019nishma<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 and we will hear.\u201d Our sages are unified on the meaning of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">na\u2019aseh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, agreeing that it refers to doing that which we are commanded. However, there are different explanations of the intended meaning of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nishma<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While literally \u201cwe will hear\u201d is from the same root in the oft-recited <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shema Yisrael<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Hear O Israel, some sages posit that it may be interpreted as \u201cwe will obey\u201d while others define it as \u201cwe will understand\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to know God? Today we attend yeshivas and seminaries, listen to <em>shiurim <\/em>(lectures) in person (at least we will again soon, God willing) and through video and audio presentations, and are privy to voluminous amounts of learning material, including our very own 929. There are more avenues to feed our striving for understanding than ever before.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do we <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> God? And why does \u201cknowing\u201d come before \u201cunderstanding\u201d? Just as when we accepted the Torah by expressing that we would act first (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">na\u2019aseh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and then hear or understand (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nishma<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), so too was Hosea affirming in his prophecy that we would again begin with the active and follow with the reflective. We will know because we will do; we will strive to know because we will endeavour to understand. Yes, we are bound to increase our knowledge through study, but inevitably there will be some things we never come to understand intellectually. Nevertheless, as Rabbi Jonathan Sacks expresses so eloquently in Covenant and Conversation:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThere are certain things we can only understand by doing. We only understand leadership by leading. We only understand music by listening. Reading books about these things is not enough. So it is with faith. We can only truly understand Judaism through living by its commands. You cannot comprehend a faith from the outside. God claimed that he would deal with Ephraim and Judah in the manner that a lion treats its prey. How would Hosea's listeners respond to his rebuke? In chapter 6, Hosea tells us their answer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chapter begins with the people's speech: \"\u201cCome, let us turn back to the LORD: He attacked, and He can heal us; He wounded, and He can bind us up.\". Apparently, they have taken Hosea's message to heart. Not only do they acknowledge their guilt and that He is the sources of their tribulations, they answer Hosea's previous claim (4:1, 4:6, 5;4) that the land lacks knowledge of God by declaring \"And let us know, let us strive to know the Lord: like the dawn whose going forth is sure, and He will come to us like rain, like the latter rain which satisfies the earth.\" Surely God will lovingly welcome His people back!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosea quickly supplies God's disappointing response. \"What shall I do for you, Ephraim? What shall I do for you, Judah? For your loving-kindness is like a morning cloud and like the dew that passes away early.\" The commentator Malbim states that what Hosea is suggesting is that just like the morning cloud contains no rain, as whatever moisture that reaches the ground will dry up in the heat of the day, so too God is not fooled by the people's response \u2013 even if it is sincere, the change is not lasting enough or permanent enough to be meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the main crux of Hosea's argument is found in verse 6: \u201cFor I desire loving-kindness, and not sacrifices, and knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these words, Hosea joins a long list of prophets who castigate the Jewish people for their reliance on sacrifices as opposed to making fundamental changes in their behavior. However, the rabbis found a message of optimism in Hosea's words:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai was once walking with his disciple, Rabbi Joshua, near Jerusalem after the destruction of the Holy Temple. Rabbi Joshua looked at the Temple ruins and said, \u201cAlas for us the place which atoned for the sins of the people Israel lies in ruins.\u201d Then Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai spoke to him these words of comfort, saying, \u201cDo not grieve, my son.\u00a0 There is another way of gaining atonement even though the Temple is destroyed.\u00a0 We must now gain atonement through deeds of lovingkindness.\u201d\u00a0 As it is written in the words of the prophet Hosea, \u201cFor I desire loving-kindness, and not sacrifices (6:6)\u201d\u00a0 (Avot de Rabbi Natan, ch. God\u2019s instruction to humankind (the word translated as \u201cshower\u201d also means \u201cinstruct\u201d) is life-giving, like the rain. Both the people who asks, and the God who rejects their plea, use images from the world of precipitation. People: \u201cLet us pursue obedience to the LORD, And we shall become obedient. His appearance is as sure as daybreak, And He will come to us like rain, Like latter rain that refreshes the earth\u201d (verse 3). God: \u201cWhat can I do for you, Ephraim, What can I do for you, Judah, When your goodness is like morning clouds, Like dew so early gone?\u201d (verse 4). It\u2019s really too bad that the answer is not more positive, and the conclusion of the prophecy leaves the listeners, and us, out to dry.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The footprints of the suspects<\/em>. Hints at who the most severe transgressors in Israel are can be found in verses 7-9. Blame is laid in the region east of the Jordan, in the region of Gilead, where lies \u201cthe city of evil doers.\u201d And the \u201cgang of priest\u201d who murder \u201con the road to Shechem.\u201d Is that referring to cities of refuge that are not functioning because of the priests? Or is it perhaps the bloody rebellions that the Gileadites led in Samaria, as described in II Kings 15:25?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Goodness, not sacrifice<\/em> (verse 6). If that sounds familiar, you\u2019re on to something. We\u2019ve heard it from Isaiah (for instance in chapter 1), and in Jeremiah (chapter 7).
