After a whole book of Ezekiel\u2019s bleakness, I just don\u2019t have any more optimistic things to say about God punishing Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter felt particularly harsh. God proclaims that even when Israel brings sacrifices \u201cTo seek the LORD, they will not find Him. He has cast them off\u201d (5:6). God describes Himself as a \u201clion to Ephraim, Like a great beast to the House of Judah; I, I will attack and stride away\u201d (5:14). What happened to the God that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protects<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the people \u201cAs a lion\u2014a great beast\u2014 Growls over its prey?\u201d (Isaiah 31:4) Where is the God who will not abandon us even as we \u201cwalk through the valley of death?\u201d (Psalms 23:4)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I began writing for 929 a little over a month ago, I was happy to read between the lines of Ezekiel for the \u201cpositive take\u201d on God hating us. I waxed poetic about the human relationship with divinity and the beautiful, if problematic, marriage between God and Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s becoming increasingly harder for me to accept the Prophet\u2019s theological approach. How can I argue that bad things are the results of our sins and God\u2019s subsequent wrath? I mean, where does that leave us today amidst global pandemic, a failing economy, and civil unrest? Subscribing to the prophetic approach feels like choosing the lesser of two evils. By rationalizing terrible things by saying God hates us, at least we\u2019re keeping God in the picture. It\u2019s better to have an angry, jealous God than a world that belongs to chaotic randomness. There\u2019s even comfort in the notion that amidst tragedy, God may be punishing us, but He hasn\u2019t deserted us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cannot imagine creating a narrative around the pandemic that portrays God unleashing COVID-19 onto the world out of anger, jealousy, or spite. But that doesn\u2019t mean I think God is out of the picture. Perhaps there\u2019s a way to combine the Prophet\u2019s perspective<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God cares, albeit that caring manifests in punishment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with my modern sensibilities that refuse to judge the character of the entire world based on the pandemic that plagues us. Maybe there\u2019s a way to still <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cry out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to God in our suffering without attributing it to divine Attend, O House of Israel, and give ear, O royal house! For right conduct [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha-mishpat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] is your responsibility!\u201d (Hosea 5:1). This verse served as the basis for a provocative synagogue sermon preserved in Bereshit Rabbah 80:1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yosi the Maonian preached in the Synagogue of the Maonians [Maon was a village of priests near Tiberias, the city in which the Sanhedrin was located at the time]: \u201cHear this, O priests! Attend, O House of Israel, and give ear, O royal house! For right conduct is your responsibility!\u201d (Hosea 5:1). In the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will judge the priests harshly for not having labored in Torah, saying to them: \u201cHear this, O Priests!\u201d Did you not receive from My children the twenty-four priestly gifts?! And the priests will reply: The people [of Israel] gave us nothing. Then He will turn to Israel and say: \u201cAttend, O House of Israel\u201d. Why did you not give the priests the twenty-four priestly gifts which I commanded in the Torah?! (see Numbers 18:8-19). And they will reply: Because the House of the Nasi has taken everything. [The Nasi was regarded by both the Jews and the Roman authorities as a kind of royal authority]. \u201cAnd give ear, O royal house! For right conduct is your responsibility\u201d. For it says: \u201cThis shall be the right conduct of the priests [concerning the prescribed gifts given to the priests by the people]\u201d (Deuteronomy 18:3). For this reason, divine justice turns upon you.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Rabbi Yehudah Nesiyah [3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century head of the Sanhedrin] heard report of this sermon, he became angry. His counselor, Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, said to him: We should be grateful to the Roman rulers for showing us the way in at least one thing. They have clowns and jesters in their theatres and circuses who sometimes poke fun at the rulers, the effect of which is to discharge the anger and dissatisfaction of the people in laughter, instead of their sitting around and grumbling bitterly. And what Yosi the Maonian did was just to interpret a verse of Torah, so why should you be so angry at him?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yehudah said: Bring him to me.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Yosi arrived, the Nasi asked him: How would you interpret the saying: \u201cLike mother, like daughter\u201d? (Ezekiel 16:44). Yosi replied: This means, as the daughter, so is the mother -- the people are like the Nasi of their generation! As the people say: \"from the garden, you can tell about the gardener\". Rabbi Shimon looked at Yosi and said: So far, I haven't even managed to assuage Rabbi Yehudah's anger at your first insulting remarks about the House of the Nasi. But you have been a snare to Mizpah and a net spread out over Tabor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentators such as Metzudot David and Malbim take \u201cMizpah\u201d and \u201cTabor\u201d as place names, and thus assert that even if Jeroboam ben Navat began the practice of banning his subjects from travelling to Jerusalem out of fear that their loyalty to his kingdom might be compromised (see I Kings 12:26-33,) the subsequent royal houses of the kingdom of Israel (2 and 3), along with the priests of the Temples (1) continued to physically prevent Jews from traveling to the Jerusalem Temple to worship during the pilgrimage festivals. They did this by appointing guards around the nearby mountains of Mizpah and Tabor to stop them, to the point of murdering any would-be pilgrims.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A broader perspective, that indicts the entire Jewish people, is adopted by Radak, who, while he does cite the midrash attributing the beginning of this practice to Jeroboam\u2019s reign, initially asserts something entirely different:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the prophet remonstrates (the kingdom of) Judah, and particularly those who had the responsibility of rebuking (improper behavior), the priests of the Temple (1), which stood in the portion of land belonging to Judah, and the royal house (3), who also should have rebuked Israel and pursued justice. The tribe of Judah is referred to as \u201cthe house of Israel\u201d (2) because they are the essence of the house of Israel...<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You (the leaders of Judah) should have pursued justice; however, you were a \u201csnare\u201d and a \u201cnet\u201d vis-\u00e0-vis the nation, because they watched you as you perpetrated evil actions, and they learned from you. You were to them the opposite of what you were supposed to be, and therefore were to them like a \u201csnare\u201d by which animals and birds are trapped; so too they were trapped by your evil deeds that you did to them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophet mentions \u201cMizpah\u201d and \u201cTabor\u201d because they are high mountains in the land of Israel, and the hunters place upon them their traps\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dispute between most commentators and Radak appears to center upon the degree to which a single segment of the population should be accused of malfeasance and therefore deserving of God\u2019s wrath, as opposed to attributing blame to the Jewish people\u2019s leadership in general. The later JPS (reprover) along with ArtScroll (castigate) take it as a derivative of the verbal root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y-s-r<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to rebuke, chastise, or moralize, while the older JPS (rejected) seems to derive it from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s-u-r<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to turn aside or astray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crux of the verse, however, lies in the first two words: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veshachata sheitim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are enigmatic. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Sh-ch-t<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means to slaughter (old JPS and ArtScroll) and while there is no other usage in Tanakh of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sheitim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are instances of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shitim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the acacia trees of which the Mishkan and its appurtenances were constructed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ArtScroll\u2019s translation of \u201cdeviants\u201d seems to rest on the assumption (shared by Rashi and Radak) that the root <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>sh-u-t<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is related to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s-u-t<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, signifying irregularity or aberration (as in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sotah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and may be reflected as well in the older JPS \u201cfall away.\u201d Whence, though, did the newer JPS get \u201ctrappers\u201d and \u201cpitfalls\u201d? The answer, which requires an emendation (correction) of the Masoretic text, is nevertheless wholly consistent with the context.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediately previous verse compares the priests and rulers of Israel to traps: \u201cThey have been a snare (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to Mitzpah and a net (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reshet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) spread about Tabor;\u201d if we were to change but one letter of our problematic <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veshachata<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it would yield the noun <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shachat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a synonym of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reshet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (see Psalms 35:7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My suggestion (with Robert Alter) is that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shitim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the aforementioned acacia trees, is a place name: the name of the place where the Israelites of a much earlier era had gone whoring (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liznot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with the \u201cdaughters of Moab\u201d (Numbers 25:1). He assumes the role of the tower watchman and shouts out, \"Sound a ram\u2019s horn in Gibeah, A trumpet in Ramah; Give the alarm in Beth-aven; After you, Benjamin!\" The three cities mentioned are cities belonging to Israel in the north, but are located on the southern border between Israel and Judah. Beth-Aven (literally \u201cthe house of sin\u201d) is likely a clever slight on the northern religious capital Beth-El. While the shofar serves many functions in Tanach, it is clear here that the context is that of Numbers 10 \u2013 the blasts warned the people of an impending invasion and war. Hosea's warning is to both Ephraim and Judah. Both peoples violate a fundamental sense of brotherhood by seeking assistance from traditional enemies in order to weaken the other.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The background for Hosea's accusations is the political turmoil that erupted upon Pekah's assassination of Menachem's son Pekahiah (2 Kings 15:22-29 \u2013 likely 736 BCE). Menachem had adopted a policy of appeasement towards the menacing Assyrian empire, which involved heavily taxing the populace to pay for protection offerings. Having assumed complete control over Israel's foreign policy, Pekah began an aggressive anti-Assyrian program that would ultimately prove fatal. Though Israel was in no condition to embark on this course, Pekah formed an anti-Assyrian alliance with Rezin of Damascus and tried to recruit others into open warfare against the empire. He appealed to the king of Judah Ahaz, but he refused. As a result, the two monarchs decided to remove Ahaz by force, hoping to replace him with someone more sympathetic to their plans (Is.7:6). Meanwhile, other nations such as Edom and the Philistines took the opportunity to also wage war against Judah to strengthen their borders (2 Kings 16:6, 2 Chr. 28:17-18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of Pekah's maneuverings were devastating to both countries. While 2 Kings says that Pekah could not defeat Ahaz (16:5), Chronicles describes (2 Chr. 28:1-15) a great slaughter of civilians and the looting of Jerusalem. In response, Ahaz appealed to Assyria for assistance in repelling the invading coalition armies. Accordingly, Tiglath-Pileser\u2019s armies destroyed the Philistine city-states along the coast in 734, cut off any potential Egyptian assistance, and then turned back north to deal with Pekah. By 733, the Assyrians had taken most of Israel's territories. Only the Samarian hill country remained. According to the prophet Hosea, Judah took advantage of Israel's weakened state to retaliate by conquering areas in Benjamin. There are those who believe that Hosea is prophesying in Israel in the final years of the reign of Jeroboam II, until the exile of the residents of the Galilee and Trans-Jordan by the Assyrian king Tiglat Pileser in the years 733-32 BCE, and perhaps even until the destruction of Samaria. It is a time of anarchy, internal struggles for power, and trying to defend against Assyria, the dominant imperial power.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>From within and without<\/em>. The rot will eat away from inside (verse 12), and the lion will devour from outside (verse 14). And the One who is behind both of these images is God. The prophecy wants its listeners to believe that the root cause of all the crises, of every type, is the crisis in the relationship between the people and God.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Where is Judah<\/em>? This prophecy regarding the kingdom of Israel, includes a reference to Judah. Look for it. (It\u2019s in parentheses in the translation).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>They can look for me<\/em>. That\u2019s what verse 15 says: \u201cAnd I will return to My abode\u2014 Till they realize their guilt. In their distress, they will seek Me And beg for My favor.\u201d This is the purpose of the punishment and the distancing from God according to chapter 3.
