Now, as then, he was transported in a vision from Babylonia to Jerusalem, but a close reading reveals a substantive difference in the conditions under which the respective journeys were taken. 8:1 states: “There [at home], the hand of the Lord God fell (naflah) upon me,” while 40:1 reads: “The hand of the Lord was (haytah) upon me.” The former is indicative of a forced journey, implying an adversarial relationship with God; the latter suggests more conviviality.

Another significant feature of the latter journey emerges from the structure of the story. From 40:4 though 42:20 (incorporating the physical description of the Temple and its precincts), Ezekiel’s interlocutor (“a man who shone like copper” 40:3) interjects into the prophet’s narrative only four times: In 40:45, he pointed out the priests’ chamber (lishkah); in 41:4, he identified the Holy of Holies; in 41:22, the table (shulchan); and in 42:13, the “consecrated chambers” (lishkot ha-kodesh) in which the priests were able to eat from the sacrificial offerings.

If I were to venture an explanation for these exceptional utterances, I would assume that the last named three locations were presumed to be of particular interest to Ezekiel who was, after all, a priest (1:3). Temple is an otherworldly environment, in which the ordinary rules of life do not apply

Most of the last section of the Book of Ezekiel is dedicated to a vision of a new Temple to be built in Jerusalem during the messianic age. In a style reminiscent of the sections of Exodus describing the plan and the construction of the Tabernacle, Ezekiel is led through the precincts by an angelic being and the design of the future Temple is described in great detail. One detail mentioned in this chapter is particularly striking: “And all over the wall, both in the inner one and in the outer, ran a pattern. It consisted of cherubs and palm trees, with a palm tree between every two cherubs. Each cherub had two faces: a human face turned toward the palm tree on one side and a lion’s face turned toward the palm tree on the other side” (41:17-19).

A number of problems arise with the presence of these carvings in the Temple. Although no longer widely observed in the Jewish world today, many traditional halakhic authorities consider the second commandment, which includes the injunction “You shall not make for yourself a sculptured image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth” (Exodus 20:4), to constitute a general ban on the main of human and animal images. Even among those who permit some image-making, there are those who hold that the depiction of human beings is especially forbidden. Ezekiel’s Temple seems to include depictions of both human and animal life. Perhaps making matters even worse, the creature carved onto the walls recalls the strange, multi-faced beings which we encountered in the “vision of God” with which the Book began — raising the possibility that these carvings are of an angelic being, or even depict some aspect of the Godhead itself.

If we grant that these carvings portray something which in ordinary circumstances would be forbidden to depict, then this case would in fact fit a pattern associated with the Temple. Many things forbidden during ordinary times and in ordinary places are not only permitted but actually mandatory within the Temple precincts. The priestly garments, for example, are composed of a forbidden mixture of wool and linen, and the duties of the priests include lighting fires on the Sabbath, an activity which if performed outside would merit the death penalty.

Thus we find in the space of the Temple a sort of controlled and sanctified transgression. It should be stressed that these acts consist entirely of ‘ritual’ commandments — there is no evidence that the Temple served as the scene of ‘holy’ acts of violence or sexual sin. Nevertheless, this pattern — of the requirement within the Temple grounds of acts which would be sinful without — helps create the impression of an otherworldly environment, in which the ordinary rules of life do not apply. Perhaps, these moments suggest, in such an extraordinary atmosphere the presence of God is more easy to discern.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/ez41-cherubim-etc.jpg","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":328,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/ez41-cherubim-etc.jpg","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":328
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/ez41-cherubim-etc.jpg","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":328,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/ez41-cherubim-etc.jpg","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":328
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem.
