All of that blood was cleaned out into the gutters and streams, and it flowed to the valley below the Temple. The high nutrient blood fertilized the soil of the valley. This seems like a very practical application. The difference comes two verses later: “But its swamps and marshes shall not become wholesome; they will serve to [supply] salt” (verse 11). The verse can be read as another practical application of the water surrounding the Temple. If everywhere had fresh water, there would be no salt, so God promises that some areas will remain salty. This seems odd in context. If God is boasting about the benefits of the Temple waters, why pause to say that some areas will have salt? God is explaining that not all of these blessings will be felt everywhere. Certain areas will still have brackish waters.

Perhaps the water here is symbolic. radical example of prophetic universalism

In the last chapter, we saw how Ezekiel’s vision of the role of the post-restoration leader shows a concern that the egalitarian ethos of the Torah’s system of land ownership might be disrupted by the prince’s greed. In the 47th chapter of Ezekiel, we find, rather than a conservative impulse regarding that system, a surprising reform — one with radical implications for Israelite identity.

Political belonging in the Israelite commonwealth is defined primarily by descent. The people as a whole claims descent from the Patriarchs, and are further defined by a tribal identity derived from their descent from one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The sense that a familial bond grounds the political structure of the nation is strong; fellow Israelites are referred to as “brothers.” Alongside natives (ezrachim), born into the Israelite people, many places in the Bible speak of a class of people called gerim, variously translated as strangers or sojourners. These are apparently people who are not of Israelite descent but, for economic or other reasons, find themselves living in the Israelite commonwealth. Because they are not Israelites, they lack access to the basic means of maintenance which are available to Israelites living in the patriarchal clans which are the basic social units of this society; the stranger is habitually mentioned alongside other classes of vulnerable people, such as windows and orphans, for whom special care is commanded. A number of texts (e.g. Exodus 12:49, Numbers 15:16) indicate that the distinctions between such ‘permanent residents’ and native-born Israelites ought to be deemphasized or minimized. Nevertheless, the distinction apparently remains in some sense indelible; the gerim simply cannot acquire different ancestors.

A moment in our chapter seems to call the finality of this distinction into question. After detailing the boundaries of the tribal territories (in a manner which is strikingly different and apparently much more equal than the division detailed in Joshua), Ezekiel says: “This land you shall divide for yourselves among the tribes of Israel. You shall allot it as a heritage for yourselves and for the strangers who reside among you, who have begotten children among you. You shall treat them as Israelite citizens; they shall receive allotments along with you among the tribes of Israel. You shall give the stranger an allotment within the tribe where he resides—declares the Lord GOD” (47:21-23).

The incorporation of people of non-Israelite heritage into the system of tribal land tenure, a system apparently inextricably bound to descent, is a remarkable reform, one which would seem to destabilize the principles on which the system is founded. This moment is one of the most radical examples of prophetic universalism, sitting alongside Isaiah’s vision of a Temple in which non-Israelites serve as priests. The prophet sees “trees in great profusion on the bank of the stream from this side and from that side” (Ezekiel 47:7). Then, he is told that “Every living creature that swarms will be able to live wherever this stream goes” (verse 9). And that “on the stream, on its bank, from this side and from that side (mi-zeh u-mi-zeh) will arise all manner of trees for food, their leaves will not wither nor their fruit fail…because the water for them flows from the Temple. For be it known to you that in the future, God will bring from the Garden of Eden excellent trees…As it says: “And on the stream, on its bank, from this side and from that side (mi-zeh u-mi-zeh) will arise all manner of trees for food…Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing (trufah)” (Ezekiel 47:12)…

Rabbi Yohanan relates the term “trufah” to Greek “therapeia” (healing), while Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi elaborates dramatically on this passage. And elsewhere this exact expression refers to how the two Tablets of the Covenant were written “from this side and from that side” (Exodus 32:15)! Rabbi Levi interjected: Why learn that Words of Torah heal the tongue from Ezekiel, when we can learn it from a more immediate context? Let us rather learn it from another context.
