These boundaries described here are very different from the ones in Joshua. In Joshua, the boundaries had different dimensions and shapes. In Ezekiel, the boundaries are all similar sizes and stacked one on top of each other. Dan remains at the top, followed by Asher, Naphtali, Menashe, Ephraim, Reuben, Judah, a Temple zone, Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulon, and Gad. There are no tribes in the Transjordan as in the past. There are tribes south of the tribe of Judah. The Temple is not subsumed in another tribe, it now exists in its own zone. In the Temple zone is an area for the priests, the Levites, and the prince. All these areas are new.

Why is there a shift in the allocation? Perhaps it is more symbolic than practical. Each tribe is to be treated the same. God also mixes Judah within the other tribes, so it is not as easy to separate the “Southern Kingdom” from the “Northern Kingdom”. The New Israel will all be about unity. The Temple itself has gates that are named after the tribes; north- Reuben, Judah, Levi; east: Joseph, Benjamin, Dan; south- Simeon, Issachar, Zebulon, and west- Gad, Asher, Naphtali. These gates evoke the formation in the wilderness, although Levi has a gate, and Menashe and Ephraim are subsumed under a Joseph gate echoing the message of unity. The reminder of the wilderness brings the nation back to those heady early days when the nation was united and connected to God as God told Jeremiah:

Go proclaim to Jerusalem: Thus said GOD: I accounted to your favor the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride— how you followed Me in the wilderness” (verse 2).

Each tribe gets a gate. Each tribe is responsible for the protection of Jerusalem. The book ends on a technical, yet uplifting note: “Its circumference [shall be] 18,000 [cubits]; and the name of the city from that day on shall be “GOD Is There” (verse 35). The book opened with the same death and destruction promised in Jermiah and Isaiah. Ezekiel lived through the destruction of the Temple while in exile. The first exile of the people may have felt hopeless. Israel’s journey had been from the bondage of Exodus to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

What was going to happen now that the people were exiled from their land? The last few chapters describe a return to that land; first with the new Temple and lastly with the tribes. The tribal arrangements will now be equal in a way that hopefully fosters a better sense of unity. Despite all the death and destruction and reconfiguration one thing remains the same- Jerusalem. Ezekiel ends his book with the promise that Jerusalem will forever be known as God’s city.

You can continue to follow Josh Blechner’s daily writings into the minor prophets and beyond, in his What’s App group.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt23-community-1.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt23-community-1.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1920
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt23-community-1.png","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/dt23-community-1.png","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1920
Maor Greene is a rabbinical student and doctoral student in Hebrew Bible at Jewish Theological Seminary. God’s people feel utterly abandoned.

Abandonment and fear of abandonment are two of the most painful experiences in human life. It ends by narrowing down its scope to Jerusalem, confined specifically to the outer limits of the city, three at every direction with gates named after each tribe. A summarizing verse marks the transition between the geographic allotment to each tribe and these gates which designates all the bounded shares in the land “as an inheritance (nachalah) for the tribes of Israel and their portions (machlekotam)” (29).

Both terms express a potential danger inherent in territorial boundaries. Saul was about to encircle David when an enemy threat on another front diverted his attention and he abandoned his pursuit. The general consensus among commentators is that the name memorializes their departure from each other at that critical interval. Thus, the term’s association with geography captures its positive and negative sense. It is a monument to both a schism within the Israelite state and the historical moment ensuring David’s survival and the future of the Davidic kingship line.

The original apportionment of Israel involved an unequal distribution with Jerusalem spanning both Benjamin and Judah. However, difficult as it is to map, Ezekiel’s reimagined utopia envisions Jerusalem as neutral territory sandwiched between all the other tribes occupying precisely equal areas to the north and south of it.

Machlekot signifies the thin line between unity and disintegration. Its strategic position in the chapter capping off the partitioning of the land among the tribes and introducing the twelve tribal gates of Jerusalem identifies the firewall preventing a collective of mutual interests from dissolving into an assortment of self-interests. The twelve gates occupying the city’s extremities from every direction and bearing the names of each tribe reflects Jerusalem’s equally belonging to all in a sense that transcends borders and geography. That is why Ezekiel ends of the entire book anticipating a new name for Jerusalem, like Isaiah’s “chefzi-bah” (“espoused” 62:4), and Jeremiah’s “the Lord is our righteousness” (tzidkenu, 33:16).

In the ideal future the holy city will not be identified by a name that is always associated with a certain country or nation but rather by a much broader principle or idea that transcends time, place, and ownership.
