Who is Gog?

Rashi says that Gog is the name of the king of Magog. He cites a verse in Genesis 10:2 “The descendants of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.” Abarbanel disagrees. He says that Gog is the name of the nation and Magog is the name of the country. The chapter tells of a major battle over Jerusalem between the nations of the west and the nations of the north and east. He explains that the second part of the verse shows that the people of Gog first settled in Magog in the north and then traveled to the cities of Tubal and Meshech in the west which were outside of their normal territory. He also explains that the battle takes place in Israel, but it is not a war against Israel. Instead, Israel is just the theater where this epic world war happens.

Malbim is blunt and admits that no one really knows who Gog and Magog are, just that they are from the family of Japheth. He surmises that this has something to do with the Romans who destroyed the second Temple and a battle between the eastern nations and western nations.

Metzudat David and Radak have a similar approach to Rashi. Gog is a prince that rules over three nations- Magog, Meshech and Tubal. Radak explains that Gog is the generic name for the king, similar to Pharaoh. There are commentators throughout the ages that have tried to link Gog to whichever devious country was around at that time from Rome to the Soviet Union. The ambiguity of an enemy that plays no other role in Tanach except for an obscure reference in Genesis lends itself to this open-ended reading. Perhaps that is exactly the point of the chapter. This nation is anonymous which allows it to be any nation at any time.

The story of Gog and Magog is read on Sukkot, and this leads Rabbi Shimshon Rephael Hirsch to suggest a homolytic explanation. Gog is similar to the Hebrew word for roof, which is a stable part of a house unlike the roof of a sukkah. Sukkah celebrates God saving the people in the wilderness when the people relied on God. When the people rely on God, they follow and believe in God. However, when the people feel secure enough to construct a roof, they feel strong and powerful and turn away from God. The battle is then between those that believe in God and those that do not. This thematic reading follows similar themes in Ezekiel wherein the prophet rails against those that believed they were greater than God. This would make this chapter a fitting capstone to this great theological battle that Ezekiel has been referencing until now.

Or what? Recited by a bereaved person, this ‘prayer for the dead’ does not mention death at all, despite the belief that recital of the prayer plays a part in easing the purgatorial sufferings of the departed. Instead, the tone of the prayer seems to be one of stoic acceptance, a litany of praise for God which is not qualified by the mourner’s pain. The fact that this message serves as the basic accompaniment to the experience of mourning indicates Judaism’s basic affirmation of life as the focus of religious energy and its discouragement of preoccupation with the realm of the dead.

While the kaddish was part of the general liturgy much earlier than its specific use as part of mourning, it is worth challenging the idea that its basic tone is one of stoicism and acceptance at all. As so often is the case in interpreting Jewish prayer, one of the best ways to understand the kaddish is to attend to its intertextual character, that is, the way in which it is built as a constellation of quotations and references from other texts, from which ensemble its meaning emerges.

One of the key texts from which the kaddish is built comes from the 38th chapter of Ezekiel, in which the prophet relates scenes from the apocalyptic war of Gog and Magog. The final verse reads: “Thus I will manifest My greatness [hitgadalti] and My holiness [hitkadashti], and make Myself known in the sight of many nations. And they shall know that I am the LORD” (38:23). Those who have heard the kaddish recited will notice a close parallel here with the opening words of that prayer: yitgadal v’yitkadash. A link is thus established between the petition which forms the kaddish and this apocalyptic scene from Ezekiel. The prophet’s vision is one in which a world stalked by the powerful and the wicked, who say to themselves with confidence “I will invade a land of open towns, I will fall upon a tranquil people living secure…in order to take spoil and seize plunder” (38:11-12), are suddenly and decisively humbled.

A world in which evil seems to rule and from which God’s saving presence seems totally absent is revealed to be one in which divine justice is manifest and the wicked receive their desserts.

The kaddish, then, rather than being a stoic litany which ignores circumstance in order to praise God, is really a plea for divine intervention, an urgent request that the wrongs of history be righted and that God’s will become known in the world. For an individual, the death of a loved one creates a breach no less painful than the more dramatic scenes Ezekiel imagines; in this light, we can understand the recital of the kaddish as a fervent prayer for the repair of our own personal worlds as much as it is a plea for national redemption.

Image: Headline in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after the Tree of Life shootings in 2018 / JTA-Post-Gazette

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez38-kaddish.png","1536x1536-width":816,"1536x1536-height":684,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez38-kaddish.png","2048x2048-width":816,"2048x2048-height":684
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez38-kaddish.png","1536x1536-width":816,"1536x1536-height":684,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez38-kaddish.png","2048x2048-width":816,"2048x2048-height":684
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. During Ezekiel’s time there is a king with a similar name in a kingdom named Lydia in Asia Minor. But it’s not clear if there’s a connection. It’s interesting to note that in the various incarnations of this discussion, the usual term is Gog and Magog, rather than the more accurate Gog from the land of Magog.

Why now?
