In the final chapter against Egypt, Ezekiel returns to the Nile River and Pharaoh\/Egypt\u2019s real and symbolic dominion there:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

O mortal, intone a dirge over Pharaoh king of Egypt. Say to him: O great beast among the nations, you are doomed! You are like the dragon in the seas, thrusting through their streams, Stirring up the water with your feet and muddying their streams! (verse 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The monster of the Nile described Egypt\u2019s prominence over the centuries as a feared beast. Egypt\u2019s reign of terror is about to end, however, as God promises to lift the beast from the Nile and \u201cfling [it] to the ground, Hurl [it] upon the open field\u201d (verse 3). This great beast will then become food for the birds and the animals of the field. Its dead carcass will rot in the valley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The idea of a great beast becoming food for others is reminiscent of the Leviathan sea monster from the book of Job. Moreover, the Talmud, in Bava Batra 75a, explains that the Leviathan will eventually be fed to the righteous:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabba says that Rabbi Yo\u1e25anan says: In the future, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will make a feast for the righteous from the flesh of the Leviathan, as it is stated (Job 40:30): \u2018The <\/span>\u1e25abbarim <\/span><\/i>will make a feast of him.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabba\u2019s description of the Leviathan stands in stark contrast with Egypt. The Leviathan in Job meets a terrible fate, but it will end up serving an honorable purpose. The great monster will feed the righteous. The Talmud goes on to explain that no part of the Leviathan will go to waste. The extra flesh will be sold in the marketplace and the skin will be used to make tents for the Temple. Egypt, on the other hand, will not be feted in death. Its carcass will be thrown to the wolves and any of it leftover will rot. Egypt may have fancied itself as great as the Leviathan, but in the end, it will be nothing more than a wild beast that dies in the The oracle in this chapter bears the date of \u201cthe twelfth year, the twelfth month, on the first of the month\u201d (1). This situates it in March 585, some seven months after the destruction of the Temple (in July-August 586), and some two months after news of that event reached Ezekiel in Babylonia\u2014according to 33:21. The fact that the Septuagint version of our chapter altered the year from twelve to eleven, however, may be an attempt to maintain strict sequencing in these consecutive chapters rather than reflecting an alternate reading of the biblical text.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

To complicate the chronology yet further, v. 17 of the current chapter is dated \u201cthe twelfth year on the fifteenth of the month\u201d without the month itself stipulated. Eliezer of Beaugency wrote that it was the same month\u2014the twelfth\u2014noted in the opening verse, and Radak and Malbim both concurred.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The combination of dates and opening formulas (such as \u201cthus said the Lord\u201d) allows us to divide the chapter into two parts. Vs. 1-16 constitute a \u201cdirge (<\/span>kinah<\/span><\/i>) over Pharaoh\u201d (2) and further subdivides into v.2, the dirge itself, 3-11, a prophecy of doom directed to Pharaoh, and 11-15, a similar prophecy directed at Egypt in general. V.16, \u201cthis is a dirge and it shall be intoned\u2026 declares the Lord God,\u201d serves as both a literary envelope and an effective closure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Part Two (17-32) depicts Pharaoh\u2019s descent to Sheol (the Netherworld) and can be subdivided in three. Following its own date formula (17, as noted) and address to the prophet (\u201cO mortal,\u201d18), vs. 19-21 consign Pharaoh to Sheol, 22-28 have him joined there by groups of other gentile dead, and 29-32 have Pharaoh consoling himself by the presence, in the Netherworld, of the rulers of Edom and \u201cthe princes of the north\u201d (i.e., Phoenicia).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Moshe Greenberg noted: \u201cThe passage [29-32] as a whole is one of the most detailed descriptions in Scripture of the condition of the dead\u201d (Anchor Bible: <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i>, 669), and characterized Ezekiel\u2019s view of non-Jewish kingdoms as \u201cessentially insolent encroachers on God\u2019s dominion\u2026 For His kingship to be established, the earthly kings and their forces must be annihilated,\u201d and he concluded his comments to this chapter with a citation of v.32: \u201cFor I will inspire dread of me in the land of the This chapter concludes the oracles of judgement against the nations which have made up the middle section of the Book of Ezekiel. One by one, we have read of the awful fates of the Ammonites and the Moabites, the Edomites and the Philistines, the sea-faring Phoenicians, and finally, at greatest length, the Egyptians. The original antagonist of the Israelites, Egypt and its Pharaoh are not spared in Ezekiel\u2019s prophecy. The king of Egypt is explicitly compared to \u201cthe dragon in the seas\u201d (32:2)\u2014 one of the primeval forces of chaos and darkness, the demonic beast who must be defeated so that a peaceful and orderly world can exist. We are given a vision of Sheol, the underworld, which is populated by all those slain in the cataclysmic battles which Ezekiel envisions \u2014 \u201ctheir graves set in the farthest recesses of the Pit, all her company are round about her tomb, all of them slain, fallen by the sword\u2014they who struck terror in the land of the living\u201d (32:23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ezekiel leaves no doubt that these deaths were necessary \u2014 the defeat of these warriors who \u201cstruck terror in the land of the living\u201d is what makes possible the new, messianic society to which the last part of the book is dedicated. One thing which is striking, though, about these prophecies, is the lack of any note of celebration in this catalogue of death and destruction. Indeed, again and again Ezekiel\u2019s visions are described in tones which are explicitly <\/span>mournful<\/span><\/em>: \u201c<\/span><\/i>This is a dirge, and it shall be intoned; the women of the nations shall intone it, they shall intone it over Egypt and all her multitude \u2014declares the Lord GOD\u201d (32:16). Though destruction may be in some sense necessary, it is a cause for sorrow in the eyes of God, and ought to be so in our eyes as well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Again and again the prophet emphasizes that God does not desire destruction for its own sake. \u201cFor it is not My desire that anyone shall die,\u201d we read, \u201cdeclares the Lord GOD. Repent, therefore, and live\u201d (18:32). The God of Israel is a God who, in the words of the High Holiday liturgy, \u201cdesires life,\u201d and does not glory in the death of sinners. We are commanded to shape our character in this manner as well; in the Book of Proverbs we find the injunction \u201cIf your enemy falls, do not exult; if he trips, let your heart not rejoice\u201d (Proverbs 24:17). The idea of <\/span>schadenfreude<\/span><\/em> seems so distasteful to this text that it actually declares enjoyment of other\u2019s misfortune to be a worse act than whatever one\u2019s enemy has been punished for; should we exult in the misfortunes of others, \u201cthe LORD see it and be displeased, and avert His wrath from him\u201d (Proverbs 24:18). The Masoretic <\/span>ramutekha<\/span><\/em> is opaque. Some interpreters derive it from <\/span>r-m-h<\/span><\/i>, a verbal stem that means \u201cto throw,\u201d and so take it to indicate the body of Pharaoh thrown away in open country. Because that interpretation seems strained, this translation follows the Septuagint in reading <\/span>damkha<\/span><\/em>, \u201cyour blood,\u201d which aptly matches \u201cyour flesh\u201d in the first half of this sentence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Time line<\/em>. According to the datelines (verses 1 and 17), the time of the prophecy is about eight months after the destruction of Jerusalem. If so, the prophecies are no longer seeking to change the attitude of Judah towards Egypt. Rather, it is just to reach closure on the fate of the Egyptian kingdom, in the regional political-theological context.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Sink-float-flow-stand.<\/em> The Nile is Egypt\u2019s central life artery. The status of the river\u2019s water tell the story of the kingdom. For instance, in verse 14: \u201cThen I will let their waters settle, And make their rivers flow like oil.\u201d The previous verse stated: \u201cI will make all her cattle vanish from beside abundant waters; The feet of man shall not muddy them any more, Nor shall the hoofs of cattle muddy them.\u201d The mud settles - which becomes a sign of no life. As part of the devastation, the river flows slowly, like oil, and not in the rapid way we expect of living waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Anyone who terrorizes others, will get his<\/em>. That\u2019s the message of this last prophecy in the cycle of prophecies to the nations from Ezekiel. That\u2019s how it\u2019s presented, despite the dark descriptions of the nether world.
