Assyria had been the greatest power on Earth. Its mighty armies were unstoppable, and then, its mighty armies were gone. The Assyrian empire, scourge of the Levant, was no more. It was replaced by another great nation, and that nation was soon to be replaced by another. Egypt had been around for a long time. It was the dominant power in the neighborhood for a long time and it wrestled with other great powers in the area. Assyria was gone, but Egypt remained.\u00a0 Ezekiel warns Egypt that it should not think itself immune to the eclipse of nations. The time will come that Egypt will join Assyria on the dustbin of history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Assyria is described as a beautiful tree that protected all living things beneath its branches.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Cedars in the garden of God Could not compare with it; Cypresses could not match its boughs, And plane trees could not vie with its branches; No tree in the garden of God Was its peer in beauty (verse 8).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The tree was so beautiful, even the trees from the Garden of Eden were no match. Ezekiel returns to the image of the Garden of Eden later in the chapter:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I made nations quake at the crash of its fall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who descend into the Pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all that were well watered, were consoled in the lowest part of the netherworld\u2026<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>[Now you know] who is comparable to you in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden. And you too shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the lowest part of the netherworld; you shall lie among the uncircumcised and those slain by the sword. Such shall be [the fate of] Pharaoh and all his hordes\u2014declares the Sovereign GOD\u201d (verses 16 and 18).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why the multiple references to the Garden of Eden?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps Ezekiel uses the Garden of Eden as a warning to Egypt. The Garden of Eden is a miraculous place with the greatest flora and fauna all hand selected by God. It seems to be the apex of creation. \u201cGod planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the human who had been fashioned\u201d (Genesis 2:8).\u00a0 To be compared to this place is an honor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Assyria and Egypt fancy themselves the greatest of the great, but Genesis 2:8 contains a key piece of information, that God planted the garden. God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden and then God kicked them out. God planted the trees of the Garden and God can uproot them and send them down to Sheol. God made Assyria great, and God tore them down. God also made Egypt great, and he will tear it down as There is perhaps no idea so tempting as that of a utopia \u2014 a social paradise. The story of Eden with which the human drama of the Bible begins is hypnotic, and awareness of the loss represented by the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the garden seems to haunt us wherever we go. In a world in which we encounter so much pain and frustration, there is always, at the back of the mind, a faint conviction, perhaps in spite of our more sober thoughts, that not only is this not how things should be, but that perhaps things really were once different. Even more seductive is the idea that we could make it so that things are different once again \u2014 that we could regain Eden.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the midst of a series of prophecies against the nations, Ezekiel indicates that such societies as Egypt and Assyria were convinced that they had achieved this elusive perfection \u2014 \u201c[Assyria] exceeded in stature all the trees of the field its branches multiplied and its boughs grew long\u2026and in its shadow lived all the great nations\u201d (31:5-6). Lest we miss the allusion, the prophet spells things out explicitly: \u201cNo tree in the garden of God was its peer in beauty. I made it beautiful In the profusion of its branches; and all the trees of Eden envied it in the garden of God\u201d (31:8-9) Assyrians, so Ezekiel says, believed themselves to have made their way back to paradise. What is notable is that in this prophecy, no mention is made of some of the characteristics we might associate with a utopian society \u2014 abundant peace, the elimination of want, the spread of enlightenment and the knowledge of God. The Assyrian \u2018utopia\u2019 is one in which political power and physical beauty are the dominant notes; it is a majestic society, perhaps even one in which a high degree of culture exists, but ultimately its achievements are empty and its Edenic pretensions are condemned.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The arrogance of which the Assyrians were guilty \u2014 the thought of regaining Eden \u2014 is as ever-present as our awareness of the brokenness of our present world. In many countries, leaders with more admirable motivations than the Assyrians have raised up regimes which really did aim to solve the (seemingly intractable) problems of the human condition, but which proved just as cruel and bloody as the kingdom of Sennacherib. The vision of utopia may be a necessary ideal, luring us along in the necessary work of improving our societies. As noted, the second part of the previous chapter bears the date of \u201cthe eleventh year, on the seventh day of the first month\u201d (30:26). The current chapter is dated approximately two months later: \u201cIn the eleventh year on the first day of the third month\u201d (1). Moshe Greenberg recorded this date as 21 June 587 (Anchor Bible: <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i>, 636).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here, the prophet likened the impending fate of Egypt to that which was suffered in an earlier era by Assyria. His oracle, which has three parts, begins and ends with a complementary literary envelope: \u201cO mortal, say to Pharaoh and his hordes who was comparable to you\u201d (2) and \u201cWho is comparable to you\u2026 Pharaoh and all his hordes\u201d (18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The first part of the oracle (3-9) uses the metaphor of a cedar tree of Lebanon to which all creatures were drawn, and which was the envy of all the trees of Eden. Part two (10-14) describes the disastrous consequences of the cedar\u2019s arrogance: it was cut down, dismembered, and abandoned. In part three (15-18), the cedar met up in Sheol (the netherworld) with the other trees that ultimately shared its fate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A cedar of Lebanon figured prominently in an earlier prophecy (17:3), suggesting that Ezekiel was using it here as a symbol of the type of hubris detested by God. As in 19:12, the downfall of the haughty is likened to the snapping off of a tree limb, and the other trees, that serve here as a foil to the cedar, are also featured earlier (17:24), representing lower order kingdoms. The subsequent descent to Sheol, too, made a prior appearance in the prophecy about Tyre (26:19 ff.) and is also reminiscent of Isaiah 14:9-10:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cSheol below was astir to greet your coming\u2014 rousing for you the shades of all earth\u2019s chieftains, raising from their thrones all the kings of nations. All speak up and say to you, \u2018So you have been stricken as we were, you have become like us!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

31:16 \u201c\u2018With the sound of its downfall I shook nations, when I brought it down to Sheol with those who go down to the Pit, and in the netherworld all the trees of Eden, the choicest and the best of Lebanon, all well-watered, took comfort.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The somewhat complicated symbolic plot is as follows: Because trees, like humankind, are mortal, even the trees of Eden have gone down to Sheol. Now, when they see that the great tree of the Assyrian empire, which they were said to have envied, has joined them in the realm of death, they rejoice; the tree that towered over them has now been reduced to their equal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Getting warmer<\/em>. The date of the prophecy is \u201cIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month\u201d (verse 1), about two months after the prophecy in the previous chapter and two months before the destruction of Jerusalem. The people listening to this prophecy are connected to Judah (which\u00a0 looks toward Egypt), rather than to Egypt itself. Listen to it with that in mind.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. An empire of peace<\/em>? It\u2019s not obvious that this was the experience of the residents of the Assyrian empire, but that\u2019s how it sounds in the prophecy (see verse 6). In the parable, all the animals enjoy what the cedar has to offer, and in sum, \u201cIn its shadow lived All the great nations\u201d (there).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The hubris<\/em>. The sin of pride is the sin which, according to Ezekiel, and also to Isaiah and Jeremiah, leads to the downfall of rulers, and the collapse of kingdoms. It\u2019s interesting to consider this claim, not only in theological terms, but also as a component of realpolitik processes that lead to corruption, decadence and overthrow.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Regards from the Garden of Eden<\/em>. The heroes of the parable are \u201call the trees of Eden in the garden of God,\u201d (9) who live in the shade of the Assyrian cedar, and they are a real garden of Eden.
