The connection between the parasha and haftarah is apparent. Va’era (Ex. 6:2-9:35) discusses the first seven plagues in Egypt. It is the beginning of the punishment for the Egyptians, and particularly Pharaoh. Chapter 29 is the first of four chapters of Ezekiel’s diatribe against the Egyptians and specifically addresses Pharaoh. The beginning of the chapter also references a scaly monster that lurks in the Nile, most likely a crocodile.

I am going to deal with you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt, mighty monster, sprawling in your channels, Who said, My Nile is my own; I made it for myself.” (verse 3).

Ezekiel goes on to declare:

I will put hooks in your jaws, And make the fish of your channels cling to your scales; I will haul you up from your channels, with all the fish of your channels clinging to your scales” (verse 4).

The word scales stands out and not only because the Hebrew word, kaskesotecha, gave me fits as I was practicing for my bar mitzvah. Ezekiel is describing the symbiotic relationship between the crocodile and the fish of the Nile and Pharaoh and his people. If the large crocodile is raised from the water, then the fish that depend on it will also be flung out of the river.

This also lends itself to another connection to Va’era and to the second plague. Some commentators believed that the plague of frogs was really a plague of crocodiles. Perhaps that notion came from the connection to chapter 29. Crocodiles are native to the Nile River and the crocodile also serves as one of the Egyptian gods, Sobek. This would match with God symbolically attacking the Egyptian gods over the course of the plagues to send a message to the Egyptians that God is the one supreme the importance of gratitude, and the acknowledgment of dependency

In this chapter Ezekiel inveighs against the Pharaoh of Egypt. God’s message to Pharaoh is harsh: “I am going to deal with you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt, mighty monster, sprawling in your channels, who said, my Nile is my own; I made it for myself.” The core of this prophecy is an indictment of Pharaoh’s arrogance and its attendant ingratitude.

Then as today, Egyptian agriculture is utterly dependent on the annual flooding of the Nile’s banks, which irrigates the fields. In this respect Egypt was unique — unlike the surrounding countries, it did not depend on rainfall. This independence from rain could produce a feeling of self-sufficiency, or even arrogance. In a number of places in the Bible we see a concern to remind the Egyptians that they too are dependent on the one God. Zechariah, for example, imagines that in the messianic period the festival of Sukkot will become a universal festival, and each nation’s annual rainfall will be dependent on its attendance in Jerusalem. It takes pains to mention that “if the community of Egypt does not make this pilgrimage, it shall not be visited by the same affliction” (Zech. 14:14) of drought, but will instead be struck by a wasting sickness. All peoples, Ezekiel and Zechariah teach, are equally dependent on God.

More pernicious than the general arrogance of the Egyptians is the special delusion of their king. In ancient Egypt the king was literally treated as a god, and Ezekiel indicts Pharaoh for this delusion. Pharaoh believes himself to be the source of the Nile’s power. In the charge which Ezekiel lays at Pharaoh’s feet, we find alongside his oppression of the Israelites the fact that “he boasted, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it.’” While Pharaoh may think of himself as a god, the creator of Egypt’s prosperity and stability, Ezekiel characterizes him as a sea-monster — meaning, precisely those forces of chaos and destruction which the true God defeats in order to establish creation. Pharaoh’s arrogance is merely a particularly extreme case of a tendency which lives in us all, and which has the power to sow chaos wherever it grows.

In the Book of Deuteronomy, the Israelites are warned not to buy into the Pharaonic delusion. Should the nation meet with world success, growing rich and powerful, Deuteronomy imagines that they will say to themselves: “My own power and the might of my own hand have won this wealth for me.” In such moments they are urged to “Remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to get wealth, in fulfillment of the covenant that He made on oath with your fathers, as is still the case” (Deut. 8:17-18). In so doing, he referred to Pharaoh as a “mighty monster” (3), using the Hebrew word tanim, which is an alternate form of the more frequently used tanin, signifying a serpent (see Exodus 7:9), or taninim, sea creatures (Genesis 1:21).

Its use here seems to be most consistent with its appearance in Isaiah 51:9: “Awake, awake, clothe yourself with splendor O arm of the LORD! Those same forces, represented by the same creatures, are destined to be defeated, once again, at the end of days, ushering in the Messianic Age. To quote Isaiah: “In that day the LORD will punish, with His great, cruel, mighty sword Leviathan the Elusive Serpent— Leviathan the Twisting Serpent; He will slay the Dragon (tanin) of the sea” (27:1).

In our case, more specifically, the monster/dragon is likely the crocodile, and serves here as the alter-ego of Pharaoh, who declared of himself: “My Nile is my own, I made it for myself” (3), whose somewhat awkward syntactic structure is highly reminiscent of the Psalmist’s attribution of creation to God: “His is the sea and He fashioned it” (95:5). When said of a mortal it is the quintessence of hubris. From the superscription: “In the tenth year, on the twelfth day of the tenth month…” we can date this prophecy precisely to January 7, 587 BCE. The pharaoh against whom Ezekiel is told by God to turn his face can be identified as Hophra, who reigned over Egypt from 589 to 570 BCE, mentioned by name in Jeremiah 44:30. In Greek historical sources, this Pharaoh is referred to as Apries (Herodotus II 161 and Diodorus I 68; in Egyptian “Wahibre Haaibre”). In 588 BCE, Hophra attempted to defend Jerusalem from Babylonian forces sent by Nebuchadnezzar II (Jeremiah 37:5, 34:21). This unsuccessful attempt led to a mutiny of his soldiers and his eventual overthrow.

Ezekiel’s prophecy against this Pharaoh focuses particularly on his hubris: “Thus said the Lord God: I am going to deal with you, O Pharaoh king of Egypt, mighty monster, sprawling in your channels, who said, My Nile is my own; I made it for myself " (Ezekiel 29:3). A similar outrageous boast, “The Nile is mine, and I made it” is repeated in verse 9.

The Midrash (Tanhuma Va’era 8) elaborates on this Pharaoh’s claim to divinity. The Holy One said: Because he made himself out to be a god, he was told that he was nothing in the world. Indeed, Moses was made like God to Pharaoh (Exodus 7:1). And from where do we know that Pharaoh made himself out to be a god? From his claiming: “My Nile is my own; I made it for myself” (Ezekiel 29:3). Actually, Pharaoh was just one of four individuals who claimed to be gods but were punished by being sexually humiliated. Three were from the nations of the world, Hiram, Nebuchadnezzar, Pharaoh, and one was from Israel, Joash…Of Pharaoh Hophra it is particularly said: “Thus said the Lord: I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, into the hands of his enemies, those who seek his life, just as I delivered King Zedekiah of Judah into the hands of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life” (Jeremiah 44:30). This was because he made himself out to be a god, as it says: “My Nile is my own; I made it for myself” (Ezekiel 29:3). Therefore, the Holy One said to Moses: Because he has made himself out to be a god, go and become a god over him, as it says: “Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I make you like God to Pharaoh'' (Exodus 7:1).

Our chapter ends with the punishment of Egypt and its Pharaoh Hophra, that they shall be conquered and devastated by King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon. This leads to a more positive conclusion: “On that day I will endow the House of Israel with strength, and you shall be vindicated among them. And they shall know that I am the Lord” (Ezekiel 29:21).

Image: Head of Apries, the Louvre / wikimedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez29-Apries.jpg","1536x1536-width":199,"1536x1536-height":290,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez29-Apries.jpg","2048x2048-width":199,"2048x2048-height":290
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez29-Apries.jpg","1536x1536-width":199,"1536x1536-height":290,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez29-Apries.jpg","2048x2048-width":199,"2048x2048-height":290
Naomi (Jaffe) Eini is an educational psychologist, lecturer and workshop facilitator, and author of the book, "Journey To The Real World" (Hebrew).
