The second chapter concerning Tyre opens with a very detailed description of a boat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

From cypress trees of Senir They fashioned your planks; They took a cedar from Lebanon To make a mast for you. From oak trees of Bashan They made your oars; Of boxwood from the isles of Kittim, Inlaid with ivory, They made your decks\u2026\u201d (verses 5-6, etc.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This extensive list evokes the list of precious items used to build the Temple, such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So Hiram sent word to Solomon: \u2018I have your message; I will supply all the cedar and cypress logs you require (I Kings 5:23).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There may be a dual reason why Ezekiel describes Tyre like the Temple. The first is to warn the people of Tyre that they may rejoice at the destruction of the Temple, but God will pay them back in kind by destroying their precious shipping industry and wealth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second may be to recall the former positive relationship between the people of Tyre and Israel and the Temple. Hiram, the king of Tyre, and David, and then Solomon had a very close relationship. Hiram helped build the Temple as shown in the verse above. God is reminding the people of Tyre that they were once close to the Israelites. They now rejoice over the Temple\u2019s destruction, but once they rejoiced in its construction. Instead of rejoicing now, they should be lamenting that the house they helped build is now destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Later in the chapter, Ezekiel further links the two nations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Judah and the land of Israel were your merchants; they trafficked with you in wheat of Minnith and Pannag, honey, oil, and balm\u201d (verse 17).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tyre had an opportunity to stand by their former allies. Instead, they decided to join Israel's enemies. As a result, their fate will be worse than Israel\u2019s. Israel suffered a major tragedy, but will survive. Tyre will disappear from the face of the earth:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The merchants among the peoples hissed at you; You have become a horror, And have ceased to be forever (verse 36).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapter 27, Ezekiel laments the fate of Tyre. This Phoenician city, on the Mediterranean coast, led a network of sea trade throughout the entire region. Before the Babylonian conquest, Tyre is described as trading with Egypt, Assyria, Arabia, and the Greek Islands. One particular town involved in those trading routes was Gebal. Ezekiel describes their citizens this way in verse 9:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cGebal\u2019s elders and craftsmen were within you,<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>Making your repairs.<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>All the ships of the sea, with their crews,<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>Were in your harbor<\/span>
\r\n<\/span>To traffic in your wares.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Gebal did not only cooperate with Tyre, but with Israel as well, in the time of Solomon:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201c\u2026Solomon\u2019s masons, Hiram\u2019s masons, and the men of Gebal shaped them. Thus, the timber and the stones for building the house were made ready.\u201d (I Kings 5:32)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Both of these verses show that Gebal was known for woodworking, as well as trade.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Gebal, or <\/span>Geval\u00a0<\/span><\/em>in Hebrew, was located on what today is the northern coast of Lebanon, between Beirut and Tripoli. While the origin of the name is subject to some debate, many think it is related to the Hebrew word <\/span>gevul<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cboundary, border.\u201d That word is cognate with the Arabic <\/span>jabal<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 <\/span><\/i>\u201cmountain,\u201d since mounds were often used to mark borders. So Gebal probably meant something like \u201cfrontier town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One product particularly associated with Gebal was papyrus, since the traders of Gebal imported that important product from Egypt, and then continued selling it to the Aegean countries. Those Greek speaking countries pronounced Gebal somewhat differently: Byblos.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Byblos was so associated with papyrus, that the Greek word for Egyptian papyrus was <\/span>byblos<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/i>From that word derived the related <\/span>biblion<\/span><\/em>\u00a0meaning \u201cpaper, scroll\u201d, and this developed into the familiar words in English, \u201cbiblio-\u201c a prefix meaning \u201cbook,\u201d and Bible \u2013 \u201cthe Book\u201d (originally in Latin the phrase was <\/span>biblia sacra<\/span><\/em>, \u201choly books\u201d, and later abbreviated to just <\/span>biblia).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s interesting to think about how this partnership between Israel and Phoenicia has evolved over the millennia. Initially, Israel needed to import Phoenician wood and craftsmen. Later, the very concept of the Bible was exported all over the world. Ezekiel is instructed here to recite a dirge (<\/span>kinah<\/span><\/i>) over Tyre, which had proclaimed itself the heir to Jerusalem by assuming the title of \u201cperfect beauty\u201d (<\/span>kelilat yofi<\/span><\/i>, v.2) that had previously been borne by Jerusalem (see Lamentations 2:15). The dirge goes on to extol the beauty of Tyrene ships that were constructed of materials from near and far.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

From cypress trees of Senir [another name for Mt. Hermon, cf. Dt. 3:9] they fashioned your planks; they took a cedar from [Mount] Lebanon to make a mast for you. From oak trees of Bashan [the Gilead] they made your oars; of boxwood from the isles of Kittim [Cyprus], inlaid with ivory, they made your deck[s]. Embroidered linen from Egypt was the cloth that served you for sails; of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah [the Aegean Isles] were your awnings. (5-6-7)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

An interesting difference of opinion arose apropos of the word <\/span>karshekh<\/span><\/i> (6), translated here as \u201cyour decks,\u201d while Moshe Greenberg rendered it as \u201cyour planking\u201d (Anchor Bible: <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i>. 545). Robert Alter also translated it as \u201cyour planks\u201d (<\/span>The Hebrew Bible; Prophets<\/span><\/i>, 1131), noting that the detailed description \u201crepresents the ships as not merely utilitarian vessels but as extravagantly luxurious constructions\u201d (ibid.).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi, on the other hand, translated it into the Old French \u201c<\/span>gouvernail<\/span><\/i>\u201d meaning a rudder. Eliezer of Beaugency rejected that translation on the grounds that rudders are submerged beneath the water and it would serve no purpose to inlay them with ivory. He preferred to identify it with deckhouses or cabins, which is also Radak\u2019s preference. 27:29 \u201c\u2018And they shall come down from their ships, all who wield the oar, sailors, all the sea\u2019s mariners shall stand on the ground.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This final verse seems rather flat for the depiction of a disaster at sea, conveying merely a sense of the sailors leaving the ship to stand on dry land. The move may be dictated by the desire to represent the sailors in the next three verse as assuming all the grief-stricken postures of mourning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. A matter of time<\/em>. The description of the greatness of Tyre as an international trading power, gives us a peek into the reality of the regional economy, and raises the academic question, of what period is this a description of? When was Tyre at the peak of its independence and success? Some researchers think that this description was taken from a period previous to Ezekiel, by decades, or even hundreds of years. For instance, in verse 17 we find Judah and Israel as two separate entities, which could support that supposition that the period in question is during the reign of King Ahab, more or less.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Optics<\/em>. The prophecy is in words. But it\u2019s worth listening, and trying to visualize an image of Tyre as a beautiful ship, laden with choice merchandise. As beautiful as possible. And then - it sinks. Try it.
