Isaiah and Jeremiah both dedicated sections of their books to prophecies against the other nations. Ezekiel does the same, starting with chapter 25. The chapter is a collection of missives against a handful of the smaller surrounding nations: Ammon, Moab, etc.\u00a0 As to Ammon and Moab, Ezekiel proclaims:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For thus said the Sovereign GOD: Because you clapped your hands and stamped your feet and rejoiced over the land of Israel with such utter scorn, assuredly, I will stretch out My hand against you and give you as booty to the nations; I will cut you off from among the peoples and wipe you out from among the countries and destroy you. And you shall know that I am GOD (verses 6-7).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The equation is simple- you clapped your hands rejoicing at the downfall of Israel, so God will stretch out his hand to punish you. The problem here is that God commanded Ezekiel to do the exact same thing in chapter 6:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Thus said the Sovereign GOD: Strike your hands together and stamp your feet and cry: Aha! over all the vile abominations of the House of Israel who shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence (6:11).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The difference between the two is the meaning behind the pounding and stomping. Ezekiel is told to stomp his feet and clap his hands in mourning. Ammon and Moab do it in joy. The actions of Ammon and Moab match Jeremiah\u2019s account in Lamentations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

All who pass your way clap their hands at you; They hiss and wag their head At Fair Jerusalem: \u2018Is this the city that was called Perfect in Beauty, Joy of All the Earth? All your enemies jeer at you; They hiss and gnash their teeth, And cry: \u201cWe\u2019ve ruined her! Ah, this is the day we hoped for; We have lived to see it!\u2019\u201d (Lamentations 1:15-16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The foreigners are overjoyed that they defeated Jerusalem. Ezekiel answers the lament of Jeremiah and the mimicked action in chapter 6. At this point, the enemies of Israel are exhilarated because they feel they have defeated Israel. Israel laments that they are defeated. But the clapping of hands and stomping of feet will be short lived. As observed by Radak (in his opening remarks to this chapter): \u201cNow, he began with the catastrophe [to befall] the nations neighboring the Land of Israel who rejoiced in its destruction.\u201d Those nations are, respectively, Ammon, Moab, Edom, and the Philistines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In 6:11, we encountered the word <\/span>ach<\/span><\/i> <\/a>(translated \u201cAha!\u201d), and we noted a difference of opinion among the commentators whether it was a cry of anguish (Rashi, Kara, Radak) or joy (Malbim). Here, in v.3, we find that Ammon was accused of crying HE\u2019ACH (again translated \u201cAha!\u201d) on the downfall and exile of Israel. This time, given the context as noted, even Rashi and Radak are obliged to define it as joyful. (Moshe Greenberg rendered it as \u201cexpressing malicious glee,\u201d <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i> 518.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Chapter 21, we cited Malbim\u2019s interpretation <\/span><\/a>of v.2:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cSet your face\u201d: This is what prepared him to know which direction to face while prophesying about the siege of Jerusalem (v.13 ff.). Here, he told how Nebuchadnezzar engaged in divination to determine whether to turn left\u2014towards Rabat Ammon\u2014or right\u2014to Jerusalem. The lot fell to the south, which was to his right, to wit: \u201cIn his right hand came up the omen against Jerusalem\u201d (27).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In other words, going southward from Babylonia, Nebuchadnezzar could have attacked either Ammon, which was situated to his west or left, or Jerusalem, which lay to his right or east. Now, in 25:4, Radak used that to highlight the irony underlying Ammon\u2019s prospective punishment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He said: Even though they escaped Nebuchadnezzar, whose lot fell on Jerusalem, they ought not rejoice on that account, because the nations of the east\u2014Medea and Persia\u2014will overcome them and inherit their land.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Edom\u2019s participation in the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem, alluded to in v.12, is elaborated on in greater detail in the Book of Obadiah, and cited in Psalm 137:7: \u201cRecall, O Lord, of the Edomites, of the day of Jerusalem, who cried \u2018raze it, raze it\u2019 to its very foundation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The prevailing perception in the Ancient Near East was that kings were emissaries of the gods or even gods themselves, and that every nation had its own god that ensured its victory in war. The prophet counters this perception by gathering all the prophecies about the nations into a single collection. This emphasizes that God, Lord of the entire world, decides the fate of each and every nation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These chapters in Ezekiel, unlike the prophecies addressed to other nations by other prophets, make scant mention of Israel\u2019s redemption.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Chapter 25, Ezekiel conveys brief prophecies concerning Ammon, Moab, Edom and the Philistines, each of which has a lengthy historical relationship with Israel. These prophecies share a uniform structure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The transition between the first and second parts of the book is indirectly shown here through the content of the prophecy to Ammon, In response to their joy over the desecration of the Temple and the desolation of the land and the exile, Ezekiel prophesies their disappearance and annihilation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Unlike the previously mentioned peoples, who gloated over the fall of Judah, Edom actually allied itself with the Babylonians and played an active role in Judah\u2019s destruction. The anger against the Edomite collaboration with the Bablyonian invaders is sharply registered in Psalm 137.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. The usual prophetic order.<\/em> In other prophetic books, too, prophecies to or about the nations are placed between destruction and redemption. That\u2019s how it is in Isaiah, which we\u2019ve already read, and in Joel and Zephaniah, which are coming soon. In Jeremiah, the Masoretic text is different - but if you read the Greek version in the Septuagint, you\u2019ll find that order.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Comfort<\/em>. The attack on the nations in this chapter is in the spirit of giving some comfort to Judah. Because the destruction of the nations is portrayed as a punishment to all those who hurt Judah - in word or in deed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. A little ancient realia<\/em>. If you\u2019re looking for the historical background of these prophecies, you\u2019ll find some scattered bits of information: the intrusion of the Kedemites in the kingdoms situated in the Trans-Jordan (verses 4 and 10); the list of Moabite military installations, and their downfall (verse 9); and the ongoing enmity and cycles of violence between the Edomites, the Philistines, and the kingdom of Judah.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. And they shall know that I am the LORD<\/em>. All the prophecies end with the called-for conclusion: There is punishment. There is vengeance. There is justice. There is a god.
