After surveying the governing classes of Israelite society for leadership, be they spiritual/moral (prophets - v.25; 28), cultic (priests - v.26), or political (officials - v.27), the search fails. God’s ‘search’ demands an individual to “repair the wall, or stand in the breach, before Me in behalf of this land that I might not destroy it.” (v.30). Previously Ezekiel accused false “degenerate prophets” of failure to provide this very strategy for they “did not enter the breaches and repair the walls for the House of Israel.” (13:5) What kind of action does this metaphor uniquely call for? And why doesn’t Ezekiel, himself qualify?

God announced unleashing indiscriminate destruction which “wipes out both the righteous and the wicked” (21:8-9), directly contravening God’s self-proclaimed rejection of collective punishment, “the righteousness of the righteous shall be accounted to him alone and the wickedness of the wicked to him alone” (18:20). Though the breached wall is commonly understood as Israel’s corrupt behaviour needing corrective guidance, it is far more radical in intent. Since God initiates punishment, it is God who has breached the city’s walls and is about to wreak total destruction. The “breach” is God’s own betrayal of justice, of the ‘wall’ which should protect the innocent but now exposes them to the same fate as the guilty. The people need an Abraham who first challenged God on this very principle protesting God’s intent to annihilate the innocent and the guilty of Sodom (Gen 18:25). Yet there was no Abraham to be found.

However, the metaphor demands more to rescue Israel, requiring both a “repair” of the wall and actually becoming part of the wall by “standing in the breach.” Abraham mounted a repair of God’s breach, offering a moral standard of individual culpability for God to consider instead of collective punishment. However, “standing in the breach” requires the self-sacrifice that would place oneself as a barrier between the enemy and the people. The Bible singles out only Moses as having “stood in the breach” against God’s destructive wrath (Ps. 106:23) referencing his confronting God at the Golden Calf episode, personally placing himself on the line. He rejected God’s offer of a glorious future to replace the annihilated community (Deut. 9:14) and posed an ultimatum: either forgive the people or “erase me from the record” (Exod. 32:32). Yet, there was no Moses to be found.

What of Ezekiel? Twelfth Night, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them”. The circumstances of our lives may change the way that we achieve our potential, and some of us may find ourselves achieving things far beyond what we might have imagined for ourselves. But behind this famous quote lies a great truth: each one of us is capable of greatness. Though not all of us dream of becoming heroes of changing the world, we each contain infinite potential. We might find that it comes naturally to us, we might have to work for it, and we might suddenly find ourselves pushed to our potential.

But even if we are born great, we still have the free will to choose how to direct our lives. This means that those who seem to be born with natural gifts and abilities to lead and heal may end up causing damage, or turning their potential for bad uses. And when we squander our potential, or we fail to put ourselves in situations that will allow us to thrive, we risk the fate of the princes of Israel described in verse 6: every one of the princes of Israel used his strength for bloodshed, and God destroyed their kingdom as a result.

In fact, God places the blame not just on the princes for misuse of their power, but on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: “Oh city in whose midst blood is shed…. you stand guilty of the blood you have shed” (verses 3-4). If each of us can have the potential for greatness, each of us can also have the potential for evil. And while we might claim that simply allowing evil in our midst is a little like having evil thrust upon us that we do not participate in, when it comes time for the Ultimate Judgement, the bystanders will be judged with the perpetrators.

Though we may not be royalty, we should all see ourselves as leaders who can set the tone for our society. All it takes for society to be consumed by bloodshed and evil is a small group of leaders who fail to achieve greatness. Ezekiel continues themes developed from chapter 20, with the emphasis now on interpersonal sins, not ritual or religious failings. To prove his point, Ezekiel heavily borrows from courtroom terminology. The first 16 verses are the indictment of Jerusalem, the next six verses are the judgment of destruction, while the explanation of the guilty verdict comprises the chapter's conclusion. The litany of sins that Ezekiel accuses and rebukes the people of in this chapter include shedding blood, dishonouring their parents, extortion and abuse of orphans, widows, and strangers, slander, accepting bribes, engaging in forbidden sexual relations.

In order to explain his judgment, God used the analogy of refining silver. This recalls the Torah's description of Egypt as an "iron furnace". According to this metaphor, the sufferings in Egypt served to purify us from our sins and impurities. The process that God describes is similar – the silver metal, along with all its impurities (copper, tin, lead, and iron), was heated up in a shallow, porous clay or bone container. When the refiner would blow a stream of air across the container, the impurities would produce a dross on the surface of the liquid silver, as all of the impure metals rise to the surface. Ezekiel describes how God melts down His own people, and when blowing across the surface of the container, it is the Jews who remain in Jerusalem who rise to the surface! They will be discarded as waste.

In this passage, Ezekiel is wrestling with a common belief held by his audience, the exiles in Babylon. The greatest punishment that the Torah prescribes upon sinners, starting with the Garden of Eden, is exile. After the first exile of 597 BCE (in the time of Jeconiah), there were two communities of Jews – those with Ezekiel in Babylonia, and those who remained in Israel. Ezekiel's listeners could be forgiven if they believed that they were the dross, the rejected ones, while those who remained behind in Israel were the pure and righteous. This attitude hampered Ezekiel's ability to convince his listeners in Babylonia that God wanted to continue His relationship with them, that their actions were meaningful. They felt that they had been rejected, removed from God's land. Otherwise, God would not have chosen to exile them and leave the others Israel. To this, Ezekiel has to explain that the opposite is true. Those that remain are compared to the impure metals, who will be destroyed in the upcoming destruction that God will bring upon Jerusalem, while the survivors are the pure silver who remain.

Ezekiel's listeners in Babylonia could be forgiven if they believed that they were the dross, the rejected ones
Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967.
