From their birth through their adulthood Israel has always been a rebellious nation. When they were born, even though they were not properly clean, God still spread his mantle over them to bring them into his fold. But the people rebelled, following other nations and gods. At the beginning

When I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you: “Live despite your blood.” Yea, I said to you: “Live despite your blood” (verse 6).

Pirkai d’Rebbe Eliezer 29 explains that the phrase is repeated twice because the people were purified through blood twice in their history. The first was during the Passover story with the blood on the walls and the second is with circumcision. And indeed, this verse is part of the verses mentioned in the circumcision ceremony, and also in the haggadah. It is no surprise that the Passover sacrifice and brit milah are the two positive commandments that have a punishment if they are not fulfilled.

Ritva explains that these two blood rituals were linked at the time of the Exodus, because God commanded the people to perform both of these rituals in order to be freed. Exodus 12:48 commands that any uncircumcised person could not eat from the Passover sacrifice. The implication was that those who were uncircumcised were able to have a circumcision in order to partake in the Passover sacrifice in Egypt. The Ephod Bod, a commentary on the Haggadah, explains that the Israelites had to overcome two major sins to warrant saving- idolatry and sexual immorality. Circumcision and placing the blood on the doorposts helped overcome these sins. Circumcision was a reminder of the separate sexual ethics between the Israelites and the Egyptians. Placing the blood on the doorposts was a sign of trusting in God and believing that God was communicating rules to Moses.

Perhaps, then, Ezekiel references these two blood connections now to show how the people have reverted back to their old ways from before the Exodus. Ezekiel portrays the Jewish people as a woman, a metaphor that will re-appear in chapter 23, culminating with the death of Ezekiel's own wife in chapter 24, symbolizing the city's final destruction. He portrays Jerusalem as a harlot (verses 1-34), like her older 'sister' Samaria and her "younger sister" Sodom (44-58). Ezekiel spares no sensitivities – repeating derogatory terms about the woman: “poorly clad and bare” (7, 22, 39); “covering/revealing nakedness” (8, 36, 37); and her blood (6, 9, 22, 38). He describes God's first compassion for her, born abandoned in a field, her umbilical cord uncut. When she sprouts into womanhood, God appears again, washes the blood from her body, clothes her with fine clothing and jewelry, and feeds her the most refined food: "‘I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you,’ says the Lord God, ‘and you became mine’" (8).

The response for all of God's efforts? There, God discovers the destitute Jewish people in a barren location (the only other time this imagery is used in the Bible), delivers her with care so that she flourishes; but when they prosper, they forsake God. The people are punished for their disobedience, but ultimately, God restores them to greatness. Several literary parallels link the two sections. Moses describes how God cared for the people like an eagle spreading (פרש; prsh) its wings (כנף; knp) over its young. God replaces the “law of Moses and Israel” which seals the earthly betrothal formula whereby the Jewish groom “consecrates” the bride (harei at mekudedshet li), with a covenantal oath that publicly broadcasts an exclusive commitment to His national bride- You became Mine.

Rabbinic traditions often view divine behaviour as a model for human beings. When the pronouncement is made that regular marriage is sanctified in conformity with Mosaic law, there is the danger that the law’s instrumental role also forging a national ethos might be lost in the technical complexities of what we term halakha. God’s address to Jerusalem, the Jewish nation’s capital, at the beginning of the chapter as His potential bride, introduces the national characteristic that hovers over every marriage, reminding the couple that its partnership contributes to Israel’s nation building, the 'am, as well as perpetuating its religion, the dat.

The second is the spiritual feature of God’s “spreading His robe” over Israel, thus drawing her into His realm. Mosaic law of course does not regulate God’s conduct for He is the transcendent Source of it. While the earthly Jewish marriage grounds a husband and wife and enfolds them into Judaism’s laws and traditions governing their relationship and the house they will eventually build, God’s pristine ceremony does not ground but elevates.
