It spreads its branches toward the eagle with its roots going down, symbolizing its humility and loyalty to Babylon. However, another eagle (representing Egypt) appears. This might be the historical background behind the parable in this chapter.

Familiar symbols. From as early as Genesis chapter 49, in Jacob’s blessing to Judah, the vine is a symbol of the House of David. The eagle in the ancient world was a familiar symbol of kingship and sovereignty. This time, Ezekiel does not surprise his listeners, and they are perfectly capable of working out the moral for themselves: “Say to the rebellious breed: Do you not know what these things mean?” (verse 12). Nevertheless, he goes on to explain, just in case not everybody gets it.

Is keeping a pact a religious value? Zedekiah, according to the parable here, is guilty of breaking the pact with the king of Babylonia. But in verse 20, God takes responsibility and punishes Zedekiah for “for the trespass which he committed against Me.” Is the breaking of any pact that was made with an oath also a sin against God? Or does verse 20 refer to an additional pact or covenant that was broken, that between God and the people? It can be understood in both ways. And if you want to know how the author(s) of Chronicles understood the matter, take a peak at chapter #929, that is 2 Chronicles 36: 13.

Where will it all continue? The top of the cedar tree wins out easily over the traitorous vine, laying on the ground. And in the future, God will create a new and impressive government from the cedar, from Jehoiachin.

Who’s king here?
