The lioness and the vine express anthropomorphic feelings of frustration and inadequacy when things do not go as they had anticipated. The challenge is to discover at least one lesson that the prophet is attempting to impart by means of these two analogies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mention of \u201cEgypt\u201d (v. 4) and \u201cBabylonia\u201d (v. 9,) and the \u201ccapture of young lions\u201d \u2013 leaders of the Jews who were feared by their enemies carried off into captivity, the parable resonates historically.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the second parable, does not appear to correspond to significant, \u201cstand-alone events,\u201d as did the first parable, despite focusing on the \u201cvine,\u201d with its reference to the bough\u2019s being replanted in an arid, desert environment (v. 13), that some have compared to the Diaspora.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At best, it is as if Ezekiel is offering a follow-up to the scenario that had been presented by Isaiah (5:1-2, 5-6):<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My beloved had a vineyard on a fruitful hill. He broke the ground, cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines. He built a watchtower inside it, He even hewed a wine press in it; for he hoped it would yield grapes. Instead, it yielded wild grapes<\/span><b>\u2026<\/b><b><br \/>\r\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will remove its hedge, that it may be ravaged; I will break down its wall, that it may be trampled. And I will make it a desolation; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thistles. And I will command the clouds to drop no rain on it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelley\u2019s \u201cOzymandius\u201d also comes to mind, and while the poem describes a statue rather than the naturally-occurring phenomenon mentioned by Ezekiel, both share common themes:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I met a traveler from an antique land,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who said\u2014\u201cTwo vast and trunkless legs of stone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell that its sculptor well those passions read<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on the pedestal, these words appear:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing beside remains. Round the decay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lone and level sands stretch far away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or perhaps Robert Burns\u2019 line from \u201cTo a Mouse\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best-laid schemes of mice and men \u201cgang oft agley (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have often gone awry<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the best way to put Ezekiel\u2019s two Crouching among the great beasts, she reared her cubs (verse 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 19 is a dirge for the princes of Judah. Ezekiel opens the poem with a reference to the \u201clioness\u201d mother. Israel is often compared to a lion. Judah in particular is referred to as both as a lion and a lioness in Jacob's blessing in Genesis:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judah is a lion\u2019s whelp; On prey, my son, have you grown. He crouches, lies down like a lion, like a lioness \u2014who dare rouse him?\u201d (Gen. 49:9).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is verse 2 of chapter 19 referring to a specific person or something else? Rashi believes that the lioness here is specifically referring to the mother of Zedekiah. She had a strong brood that she prepared to be the kings of Judah. This strong brood ended up failing her. Metzudat David takes it a little further back beyond the mother of Zedekiah to mean the house of Josiah in general. Josiah was the last great king of Judah and yet he could not raise princes that were equal to his stature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak widens the lens even further and explains that the lioness here is the royal family of Judah in general. The royal family was strong and mighty and yet at the end, the last two kings were both captured and taken away to foreign lands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one could widen the lens even further building off of Jacob\u2019s blessing in Genesis to say the lioness is all of Judah. The southern kingdom was the most loyal to God after the split between the two kingdoms. It should have been fierce and a defender of God, but instead, Judah fell victim to the same fate as its northern cousins. Ezekiel may link back to the blessing of Jacob with the final verse of the chapter:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire has issued from her twig-laden branch and has consumed her boughs, she is left without a mighty rod, a scepter to rule with. This is a dirge, and it has become a [familiar] dirge (verse 14).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a direct unfolding of Jacob\u2019s blessing in Genesis:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler\u2019s staff from between his feet; So that tribute shall come to him. And the homage of peoples be his (Gen. 49:10).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob promises the lioness Judah that a scepter would never leave him. The only one who could reverse this blessing is Judah himself, and he succeeded in turning it into a One is caught and brought to Egypt (4), while the other is caught and brought to Babylon (9). Just which historical figures do these creatures represent?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliezer of Beaugency adds little to our understanding by saying that the lioness mother is \u201cIsrael\u201d (apparently, following the Aramaic Targum), but he did identify the company of lions (2) as, specifically, Judah. Rashi, however, identified it with Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, and Radak, somewhat more generally, with the Judean royal family. However, Radak identified the company of lions with gentile kings. Rashi, Eliezer, and Radak concur in identifying the first cub with Jehoahaz son of Josiah, in conformity with 2 Kings 23:34: \u201cThen Pharaoh Neco\u2026 took Jehoahaz and brought him to Egypt, where he died.\u201d Likewise, Rashi also identified the second cub with Jehoahaz\u2019s brother and successor, Jehoiakim (aka Eliakim), who Pharaoh appointed king in his stead (ibid.), and who was taken to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar (2 Chronicles 36:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next (10 ff.), Ezekiel recited a parable about a vine that was uprooted and its fruits dried up (12), and ended up consumed by fire (14 - see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/467\/post\/73793\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our comments to Chapter 15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). While Eliezer of Beaugency simply stated \u201cthe kingdom of Judah was made humble, as a vine,\u201d Radak provided greater specificity:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added another parable, comparing the Congregation of Israel to something else, to a fruitful vine. Such was its condition initially, during the times of the early kings: David, Solomon, and the proper kings who succeeded them\u2026 The \u201cfire that issued from its twig-laden branch\u201d was Zedekiah, who caused the destruction and after whom [Israel, the vine] \u201cwas left without a mighty rod, a scepter to rule\u201d (14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two parables, dissimilar as they appear, share a common designation as dirges. To understand the significance of the first parable, the prophecy is compared with the historical events to which it refers.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This second parable does not appear to be directed at any specific king of Judah; rather, it marks the end of the monarchy of the kings of Judah collectively. This parable is noticeably harsher than the previous one. The outcome in the first parable is the capture of the kings alive, whereas in the second parable nothing remains of the vine at all.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This prophetic unit is entirely devoid of any mention of God\u2019s Name. The parable does not mention His Name, and \u2013 unlike the other parables that Ezekiel uses to convey his messages \u2013 no interpretation is supplied at its conclusion. This omission is especially glaring given the many instances in which Ezekiel\u2019s prophecy is attributed to God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The description of the fate of the last king of Judah, Zedekiah, appears as part of a series of prophecies in Chapter 21 that describe the end of the kingdom of Judah. The message it suggests is that the kings of Judah have been arrogant; they have not maintained, along with their role as kings, their subjugation to God and His charge. They have not upheld God\u2019s sanctity. In this way they have brought about the Destruction of Jerusalem and of the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Published in conjunction with hatanach.com. Against the echo of this big-cat pop-philosophy, Ezekiel 19 has us wonder about the fickle mother that pins her hope first on one of her offspring and when that one falls short in the face of challenges turns on a dime to another one.\u00a0 What is hope, if it can be so easily lost?\u00a0 What is hope if it\u2019s conditioned on the strength and luck of someone whom we imagine, maybe without basis, will prevail on our behalf?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice and John leave us with a thought that should discourage us from being too hard on Ezekiel\u2019s confused and bitter lion mom, reminding us that \u201c[t]here\u2019s\u2026 [m]ore to find than can ever be found.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":73990,"alt":"","title":"ez19-lion Here, he utters a lament for the fallen kingdom of Judah, the great lioness. She reared her cubs to be great lions, to catch prey and devour humans, but the nations are afraid of the power that they would wield, and capture the young cubs instead. Ezekiel makes historical references to Jehoahaz, who was deported to Egypt (2 Kings 23) and Jehoiachin and Zedekiah, both deported to Babylon as a punishment for or warning against rebellion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lament then transitions abruptly to Judah as a great vine that is destroyed \u2013 plucked up, cast down, dried, stripped of fruit, consumed by fire, and transplanted elsewhere \u2013 symbolizing the various tragedies Judah suffered (armed conflict, warfare, famine, death, being conquered, exile).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is interesting that despite his frustration with the ineptness of Judah's leaders, Ezekiel continues to view Judah as the lion, the king of the jungle. It is likely that Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook's famous poem,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHa-Aryeh ba-Soogar\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cThe Lion in the Cage\u201d) reflects Ezekiel's imagery, with a twist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the poem, Rav Kook describes a family of lions living in a cage. Ironically, it is the young spirited cubs, who were born in captivity, who enjoy their lives behind bars. Only one lion, an elderly weak creature, sits depressed. The young ones cannot comprehend why the old one is so morose \u2013 they surely have enough food and plenty of room to frolic, until the elder lion discloses the meaning behind his unhappiness:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a world full of light,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where freedom and liberty prevail.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a vast forest tall with trees<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And stately with mighty cedars.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fragrance is refreshing<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And free animals abound.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was your age, my children,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I ruled the forest with pride and might<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all bowed before me.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If not for my pursuers<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who broke my bones,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and this cramped cage\u2014<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would still rule the forest,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you too would be free and proud.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The words of the Old One<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthened the cubs\u2019 heart,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and with the might of lions<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they began to break down the cramped cage.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With claws and jaws and the roar of lions<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they frightened away their smug captors.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a mighty spirit<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imbued with the delight of the forest<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they shattered the walls of the cramped cage.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Old One was suddenly alive,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his broken bones healed with joy.<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebuking his enemies, he and his cubs returned<\/span><\/i><i><span
