Instead, the people interpreted the image as an instruction to worship the goddess of the sky in order to connect to God.

So how did the famous midrash that does exist come to be?

One theory is that later Hasidic rabbis wanted to emphasize the need for their communities to maintain separation from the forces of modernity and secularization around them. They focused on the three areas that were essential to them: keeping their unique dress instead of adopting contemporary dress, keeping Yiddish as their language and avoiding local dialects, and keeping their Jewish names. From here the message moved into the mainstream through the various Haggadah texts. While the content was altered the message is still the same through all of these sources. In order for the people to survive in exile it was important to maintain some unique traits, even if they shed God uses the opportunity not only to upbraid the elders for their dishonesty, but to argue that this deception began in the earliest stages of Israel's history.

Here begins one of the most fascinating exercises in historiography in all of the prophets.

Ezekiel opens with the beginning of the Jewish people, which he dates to their becoming a nation in Egypt. He describes a specific pattern of behavior, beginning with the people and followed by God's response. Ezekiel describes three movements of Israel's history:

Israel in Egypt (v. 5-9)

The first generation in the desert (v. 10-17)

The second generation in the desert (vv. 18-26)

The larger pattern is as follows – God establishes laws for the people (or reminds or rebukes them regarding statutes that were given), inevitably followed by the Jewish people violating the statutes. This leads to a period of Divine anger and God planning to annihilate the nation, but ultimately God chooses to forgo the full punishment for the sake of His Name.

In the first cycle, God chooses Israel, and chooses for them a bountiful land for them to live in – on the condition that they reject their idolatry: " So says the Lord God, On the day I chose Israel … to bring them out of the land of Egypt, to a land that I had sought out for them, flowing with milk and honey; it is the glory of all the lands" (v. 5-6). Yet, the people refuse to forsake their idols.

In the second cycle, Ezekiel emphasizes the greatness of the laws that God gave them at Sinai, laws that "if a man perform [them], he shall live through them" (v. 11). Yet, the people rebel again. Despite this, God chooses not to finish them in the desert "For the sake of His Great Name."

The final cycle is addressed to the following generations: “Do not follow the statutes of your parents” (v. 18). Again, Ezekiel emphasizes the greatness of the laws – yet Israel rejects God again.

This speech is significant not only for Ezekiel's negative portrayal of the Jewish people, who continually violate God’s laws and are unworthy of redemption. But more importantly, Ezekiel reveals the secret of their survival – the lowly state of the Jewish people is a chillul Hashem – a desecration of God's name. The first is the thrice repeated breach of God’s laws (chukim) and rules (mishpatim) by which the people “live” (ve’chai ba’hem) (v. 11, 13, 21). This is a rare prophetic recitation of its original formulation in Lev. 18:5 where God identifies His chukim and mishpatim as comprising the framework “by which man shall live.”

In typical biblical ‘measure for measure’ justice, those practices by which the people assimilated to foreign cultures, turned into laws and rules “by which they could not live” (v.25).

The second is specifying Israel’s desecration of the Sabbath. Ezekiel outdoes other prophets in his repeated accentuation of Sabbath violation as an irreparable rupture in the relationship between God and Israel, reprimanding the people no less than six times for this transgressive conduct. Perhaps the number six reflects Israel’s deteriorating worldview informed by six weekdays-an exclusively profane life as opposed to a sacred life the number seven represents.

Yet the question remains as to why Ezekiel singles out Sabbath violation. The answer resides in the integral connection between the Law’s role as a code to “live by” and the Sabbath. One of the most crucial rabbinic reforms was their ingenious reading of Lev. 18:5: Shall live by them, the verse commands, “and not die by them” the rabbis added. That innocent extrapolation - not the simple sense of the verse - generated the supreme halakhic principle that the value of life supersedes God’s law. Violating law is mandated, not just permitted, when fulfillment endangers life (pikuach nefesh). So paramount is this that Maimonides requires the greatest of Israel’s sages to perform the ‘violation’ “in order not to minimize Sabbath’s importance”- affirming its sanctification rather than desecration.

This biblical stricture “to live by them” reflects another dimension of Jewish life. God did not reveal simply a religion but a comprehensive code of conduct ensuring the coherent life of a nation. In addition to rabbinic consideration of Sabbath as the paradigmatic example of the principle “you shall live by them” (Yomah 85b), the earliest recorded historical enactment of this principle was the Maccabees’ decision to defend against Greek attacks on the Sabbath for if “we fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth.”(1Maccabees 2:43) Note the two-pronged argument. In 14:3, He asks the prophet rhetorically, “shall I be sought by them?” In 20:3, He instructs Ezekiel to say to the elders directly, “Are you coming to seek Me? As I live, I will not be sought by you!”

Why reject them so forcefully? A quest to find God sounds like a noble goal, even an act of repentance that should serve to reopen any lines of connection broken by past sins. As Deuteronomy 4:29 proclaims, after describing a fall into idolatry, “But… you will find Him, if you seek Him with all your heart and soul.”

But perhaps these elders aren’t truly seeking Him with all their hearts and souls. Both Radak and Rashi stress in their comments on 14:1 that while the elders pretended to seek God, their true intent was evil. Rabbi Yechiel Tzvi Moskowitz offers a slightly softer characterization: Perhaps they honestly want the prophet “to seek God on their behalf” – but they hypocritically refuse to abandon their idolatrous ways.

Something, however, seems to change between chapters 14 and 20. While previously it was an inference (and a pretense), in chapter 20 the prophet states explicitly that these elders “came to seek God” (v. 1). This time, Radak asserts, “these elders came to seek God, and they were righteous.” Perhaps the imminence of Jerusalem’s destruction inspired their newfound sincerity; perhaps, as Moskowitz suggests, their efforts now included a [reasonable] claim based on God’s ancient promises to His people.

Even with the claim of those ancient promises, however, it is not so easy. Much of chapter 20 is then devoted to reminding these bold elders of Israel’s extensive rap sheet, sins from ancient times right up to their own day – and given all that, once again, “shall I be sought by you? By My life… I shall not be sought by you!” (20:31).

And yet – there is indeed an ancient promise to uphold, and so the prophecy begins to make a subtle shift: Despite (or through) the anger palpable in most of the chapter, somehow it ends with the ingathering of Israel’s exiles (“… with overflowing fury… gather you from the lands where you are scattered” – vs. 33-34) and their eventual repentance (“to the country that I swore to give to your fathers…There you will recall your ways” – vs. 42-43). But nonetheless the nation is restored to its land to prevent God’s Name from being desecrated in the eyes of the nations. The desecration of God’s Name lies not only in the actual transgression of His laws, but also by how this betrayal is perceived by the nations. Thus the repair of this desecration – the sanctification of God’s Name – must likewise also be “before the nations”: through the ingathering of the people of Israel from the places to which they have been scattered.

The commandment of Shabbat enjoys a place of honor in the book of Ezekiel. What makes Ezekiel’s attitude towards Shabbat special is not that he mentions it more often than the other prophets, but that he views Shabbat as a sign and symbol – not of the Creation of the world - but of the special sanctity of Israel.

The testimony offered by the Shabbat that “I am the Lord your God” – is a concept unique to Ezekiel; there is no parallel to it elsewhere in the Torah. There is a date to this prophecy: “In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month” (v. 1), which is essentially the 9th of Av in the seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin. In about two years, the siege will begin; in four, the Temple will be destroyed. Ezekiel is already speaking of the return. But not in a very comforting way…

Bad laws? According to verses 25-26, part of the punishment is God deliberately causing Israel to fail. This is not the first time this has happened in the Biblical text: that’s how it was with Pharaoh (Exodus 7), and with the sons of Eli (I Sam. 2), and even according to Elijah (I Kings 18), that’s what happened during Ahab’s time. That might be what’s happening now to the people. God has tricked the people with a law that he gave. According to the context, the issue was how to apply the law of the first-born - “When they set aside every first issue of the womb, I defiled them by their very gifts” (v. 26). Apparently the people interpret the law to mean sacrificing their children. And thus: “ I gave them laws that were not good and rules by which they could not live” (v. 25). But there are also other interpretations.

There’s a desert on the way. The Exodus from Egypt led through a desert. The return from the Exile will also go through a desert, “the desert [or wilderness] of the peoples” (v. 35). And just like in the generation of the previous desert, the sinners will not reach the promised land.

There are more right answers. Why will Israel return from the Exile? According to this chapter, it’s not because of merit - but the opposite.
