Abarbanel believes that Ezekiel is afraid that the people will not believe his message came from God. The rest of the chapter contains several other parables. While the commentators attempt to decipher the parable's details, Rashi's words on verse 18 are representative: ”I have heard various interpretations of it… but to my mind they do not resolve the text.” At this point in time, Ezekiel plaintively complains that the people call him "a riddler" – which causes God to speak more succinctly with a clearer prophecy that leaves the people no excuse to claim that they didn't understand the message. Verses 6-10 interpret beautifully what God intended by the first riddle about the forest fires.

The verse “set your face toward the south; speak out against Darom, and prophesy against the brushland of the Negev” (v. 2) is paralleled by “set your face toward Jerusalem, speak out against her sanctuary, and prophesy against the land of Israel” (v. 7). The three verbs in each verse are the same. Thus, Ezekiel referred to Jerusalem as "the south", the sanctuary as Darom, and Israel as Negev. The verse “I am going to kindle a fire in you, which shall devour every tree of yours, both green and withered. Its leaping flame shall not go out, and every face from south to north shall be scorched by it" (v. 3) is paralleled by “I will wipe out from you both the righteous and the wicked. In order to wipe out from you both the righteous and the wicked, My sword shall assuredly be unsheathed against all flesh from south to north” (v. 8-9). Finally, both sets of verses conclude " And all flesh shall know that I am the Lord".

The major difference between the two sections is the replacement of the fire with a sword. This clarifies both God's behavior, as well as what the people may have felt was occurring. Fires are both natural phenomena and they can burn indiscriminately, moving wherever the wind blows it. Once started, fires take on lives of their own. This is not true with a sword. Unless the sword is unsheathed, it can't cause damage; and even when unsheathed, it still only causes damage with the intent of its holder who is directing its movement. The people may have felt that Babylonia had the force of a natural phenomenon. Empires arise, they conquer, they fall. This is the nature of history. No, says Ezekiel. Do not misinterpret the complete destruction that will occur as a natural event like a forest fire burning out of control. Understand that anything that occurs is because God wills it, like a swordsman with his rapier.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez21-fire-sword.jpg","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":720,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez21-fire-sword.jpg","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":720
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez21-fire-sword.jpg","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":720,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/ez21-fire-sword.jpg","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":720
Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967. They say of me: He is just a riddlemonger” (5), a challenge to God reminiscent of Moses whose early messages were similarly ignored by the Israelites, leading him to lose faith in his own mission (Exodus 6:12). Here, God’s response was to provide His own explanation of that parable: The fire is His sword; the damp trees are the righteous; the dry trees are the wicked; and “My sword shall assuredly be unsheathed against all flesh” (9).

Rashi identified “the south” with “the Land of Israel that is south of Babylonia, and “the brushland” (literally: the field of the forest) with the Temple that—after its destruction—would resemble a desolate field roamed by foxes. Eliezer of Beaugency identified the south—somewhat more particularly—with Judah, which is situated in the south of the Land of Israel, and the brushland, implicitly, with Jerusalem in which one might find noblemen resembling the lofty trees of the forest. Radak cited, as proof text: “From the north shall the catastrophe begin” (Jer. 1:14), Jeremiah’s initial prophecy of impending doom descending upon Israel from Babylonia to its north, thereby confirming Jerusalem as the object of Ezekiel’s instruction, too, along with placing his prophecy firmly into the company of Jeremiah, with whom he was contemporary.

Malbim spotted an ongoing connection in the continuation of the chapter, explaining:

“Set your face” (2): This is what prepared him to know which direction to face while prophesying about the siege of Jerusalem (v.13 ff.).
