This is the date that would later become a fast day commemorating the siege of Jerusalem. The chapter opens with an image of a boiling pot symbolizing the burning city. This image is not random. In chapter 11, the leaders of Jerusalem compared themselves to a pot to show they were safe and secure from what was around them. Here, God says yes, you are like a pot, but instead of a pot that protects what is inside, the flames of the burning city will destroy you.

At the end of the chapter, Ezekiel is faced with a horrific task. God warns the prophet that his wife will die, but Ezekiel will not be allowed to mourn for her. What is the meaning of this terrible trial? One possibility is that the destruction of the Temple was so tragic that the people will be too shocked to mourn. However, if God really wanted this to be the perfect sign, then God should not have warned Ezekiel of his wife's impending death. Instead, God should have just told Ezekiel right afterwards that he should not mourn, similar to God's instruction to Aaron after the death of his two sons in the Tabernacle. Then perhaps Ezekiel's reaction would be one of shock.

Rashi says this is a sign that the people will be afraid to mourn because they are in exile in Babylonia, the perpetrators of the destruction. Rashi's interpretation seems at odds with the gravity of the task. Why should the prophet be punished because the people will be afraid to mourn? Some commentators explain that the destruction was so sudden that the people will be in shock and not able to mourn. This interpretation at first does not seem to match because the destruction was not sudden. Prophets had warned for years it would happen and the city itself went through several years of siege and exiles and battles. Ezekiel was also warned ahead of time that his wife would die. But this interpretation may indeed be the most relevant. Perhaps the people and Ezekiel could not believe that these tragedies would happen to them, despite God's warnings. The shock came from God actually following through with His promise.

-62420fae7ea4f--62420fae7ea50gen38-grave mourn The prospect of no comforters for those in need of comfort mirrors an endemic self-centeredness at the core of Israelite society. Those who enjoy privileged positions capable of providing comfort do not provide it for the disadvantaged who need it like orphans, widows, immigrants, defenseless family members, and the elderly, as described in 22:6-12.

Ezekiel’s repeated phrase “eye’s desire” (machmad ayin) exposes this moral breakdown when read in light of its only other appearance in a prior biblical narrative. In I Kings 20, Ahab, king of Israel, hastily surrenders to the foreign king Ben-Hadad’s sabre rattling demands to submit everything to his control, including economic (gold, silver) and human resources, (the choicest wives and children). Ben Hadad’s subtle addition of the phrase resonates with Ahab’s personal possessions and relationships which prompts him to an about-face. Only the stark realization of losing his own “desires” changed his initial willingness to sell his nation out.

Perhaps this is the meaning of Ezekiel’s use of the same phrase to identify those three most cherished objects the people stand to lose- spouse ( v.16), Temple (v.21), and children (v 25). It emphasizes their tunnel vision fixated solely on their personal relationships whether in social or religious contexts. Their eyes are directed inward, toward their own families. Their Temple dedication is self-serving, manipulated to attract divine benefits for themselves. Ezekiel cites God’s possessive form “My Temple” almost exclusively in prophetic literature, appearing in his book fifteen out of the sixteen times in the entire biblical corpus outside of Leviticus. This possessive provides a particular corrective to the popular distorted view of the spiritual centre as the “people’s”, a magical place to exploit for glory and gain, rather than God’s (Mine) and dedication to His commandments.

There are indeed no authentic comforters anywhere to be found and so there can be no mourners Previous prophets tried the analytical, fact-based approach to changing the minds of the nation to no avail, so it’s time to ramp up a new angle of persuasion.

Jack Sammons, Mercer University School of Law (Parables and Pedagogy, 2005) defines the purpose of parables as being for “primarily orienting, disorienting and then reorienting the listener to matters…by a jolting reminder to the listener of things he or she already knows.” The point, he says, is not to show people what they don’t know but what they do know. Surely by now, after all the prophets’ efforts to rebuke and clearly detail the people’s transgressions and resulting consequences, this audience knows cerebrally what’s coming, but By highlighting the date, Ezekiel demonstrates the veracity of his message. When the reports of the Babylonian army laying the siege reach the exiles, and they conclude that Ezekiel's prophecies describe the events in Judah perfectly, hopefully they will start to listen to his message, and that even those who doubted him will realize that “a prophet was in their midst” (2:5; 33:33).

Ezekiel gives his listeners one final allegory to describe the imminent destruction – the preparation of a large pot to boil an animal. The first verses are pleasant, describing what appears to be the cooking of a delicious meat stew:

Set the pot … and also pour water into it. Gather its pieces to it, every good piece, the thigh and the shoulder, fill it with the choice limbs. Take the choice of the flocks and also arrange the limbs under it; make it boil well so that all its limbs will also boil into its midst (v. 3-5).

The commentator Moshe Alshich suggests that this section, the placing of the various cuts of meat and pouring water over the mixture, is meant to be understood positively. God gathered all the groups within the Jewish people together, pouring His spirit (the water) upon them. He arranged the ingredients so that the best taste would come forth - symbolizing God's hope that the Jewish people in the land of Israel would mature into the people that would serve as God's partner. However, Ezekiel reveals that the pot was either rusted or filthy on the inside, symbolizing the people's internal corruption. This meant that the food inside the pot was worthless. Therefore, says Ezekiel, the only way to purify the pot is to purge it by heat, so that the fire consumes everything within.

The Radak understands the metaphor differently, emphasizing the addition of water to the stew and suggesting that Ezekiel is predicting the prolonged suffering and siege that awaited the people:

“This is what a person does … first he places it upon his lips, then fills it with water, and then places meat in it and lights a fire under it, until the meat is cooked. The placing of the pot upon the lips symbolizes the proximity of Nebuchadnezzer to Jerusalem … the pouring of the water into it foretells that the fire will not burn it quickly, for water prevents the meat from cooking quickly - without water, the fire causes it to roast quickly, but if there is water, the meat will cook slowly. Likewise, the siege lasted from the ninth year of Zedekiah until his twelfth year, with the inhabitants of the city slowly dying off from hunger and the plague and the sword.”

image: Michal Ben Hamu

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":683,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":683
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":683,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":683
Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967.
