The merits of an individual will not save their families, their communities or the nation. In this description, Ezekiel invokes three unlikely people from elsewhere in the Bible: Noah, Daniel and Job. Why them? Why not Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, other exemplary leaders and prophets?

Throughout the Tanakh, which is a model for our later liturgy, our leaders invoke the merit of our ancestors as reason for God to save the Jewish people whenever we went astray. Repeatedly, God heard their supplications and saved the people. However, in Jeremiah and Ezekiel, God makes it unambiguously clear that our ancestors and God’s reputation among the nations will no longer save Israel. We have strayed too far; God is too angry, hurt, disappointed. So, invoking Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses or other models of righteousness on whose behalf we have always pleaded will have no effect. Noah’s was global, the entire world was destroyed, only he and his family were saved. Daniel faced national crisis, the exile of the people of Israel. Job faced a personal catastrophe; he lost his family and fortune. The devastation the nation of Israel, and its individual members, faced requires different qualities than we value in other contexts. Crisis and beginning again require different personalities, behavior, role models.

What did Noah, Daniel and Job have to teach those suffering the destruction and exile and what do they have to teach us, still in the age of exile (even if we are in Israel)? Ezekiel mentions these three figures in Tanach. Why these three? Rashi explains that each of these saw three phases of the world. Noah saw the word built up, destroyed in the flood, and then rebuilt. Job saw himself built up, destroyed and then rebuilt. Daniel was a prince, then thrown into the lions den, then restored to the level of a prince. The message to the people is that they will be the same as these three. They lived through the Temple, the destruction of the Temple, and will now see the Temple rebuilt.

The problem with Rashi’s interpretation is that Daniel is contemporaneous with Ezekiel, and was most likely younger. The story of the lion’s den takes place after the destruction of the Temple during the reign of Darius the Persian. It is possible that this prophecy of Ezekiel is out of place and may have been given much later on in Ezekiel’s life. The book of Jeremiah was out of order, as were sections of Isaiah, so it is possible Ezekiel is also out of order. Another possibility is that this Daniel is not the Daniel from the book of Daniel, but another famous Daniel. That could also be stretched to mean that Job here was another famous Job, and Noah was also someone different. That does seem like an odd answer, but may be buttressed by the fact that it is odd that Ezekiel would reference Noah here who predated Abraham and the book of Job which has an uncertain date and who may or may not have been Jewish as well.

On the other hand, there is something that links these three individuals to Ezekiel’s era- they were all isolated among other people. Noah was a righteous man in his generation because his generation was full of evil. Job seems to live a solitary life, with his only friends only those who travel from far to talk to him. Daniel was a kidnapped prince who lived his whole life in royal captivity. All three of these individuals were able to maintain their connection to God despite not being in Israel or surrounded by their compatriots. Perhaps that is Ezekiel’s message to those in exile. They may be separated from their land and their nation, but they can look to these role models to see that endurance is possible under these circumstances.

<span God declared to Noah: “I have seen you righteous in this generation” (Gen. 7:1), and He called Job “perfectly straight, God fearing, and avoiding evil” (Job 1:8).

The medieval exegetes assumed that the Daniel mentioned here was the biblical Daniel, but while he was unquestionably a virtuous man, there are problems with his inclusion in this trio. First, unlike Noah and Job, Daniel is never distinguished in Scripture as distinctively righteous. Two, while the biblical Daniel was Jewish, Noah and Job were not. Three, as he was a contemporary of Ezekiel, it is unclear how that prophet’s audience would even have known of him. I am not even sure that the reference here is to the biblical Daniel at all if we look carefully at the spelling of his name. While the biblical character is Da-ni-yel (with a yod), our third man is Da-ni-el (no yod).

Curiously, there was a Daniel who fit all these criteria: a reputedly righteous non-Jew of antiquity. This identification is possibly reinforced by the solo reference to Da-ni-el in 28:3, a prophecy that is directed specifically towards the King of Tyre (Tzor), a Canaanite city.

The consensus of the medievals is that the common denominator among these three is that each survived a catastrophe: Noah, the flood; Daniel, the destruction of the Temple; and Job, the manifold disasters that befell him.
