Would you have been willing to forgo your ability to feel, in order to not feel this pain?

Once we know how much it hurts to grieve or suffer shame and loss, we might be willing to give away our hearts, to close ourselves to all emotion, rather than risk feeling heartbreak again. As researcher Brene Brown says, “when you ask people about love, they’ll tell you about heartbreak.” We cannot escape the fact that sometimes love leads to heartbreak and loss. One of the ways we deal with this vulnerability is that we numb it. In Ezekiel’s language, we try to trade our vulnerable hearts of flesh for a heart of stone, hard and unbreakable. If our heart cannot be hurt, we cannot be hurt. Stone is impervious, much harder to break than flesh, so we try to numb or harden our hearts to mitigate our risk.

But, as Brown cautions, we cannot selectively numb emotion. When we try to hide ourselves from pain and loss and shame, we also numb our ability to feel joy and love. The hard-heartedness of this chapter of Ezekiel is born of the Israelites’ unwillingness to be vulnerable enough to risk suffering. They try to convince themselves of their own security, to tell themselves that they have what they need. But in doing so, they harden their hearts and turn a blind eye to suffering… and they lose out on the opportunity to experience redemption. The sinners of Israel are the ones who cannot allow themselves to be brave and vulnerable. They eschew temporary pain, but it will only bring them long term suffering.

When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we fulfill the vision of Ezekiel’s prophecy in verse 19, and we swap our hearts of stone for hearts of flesh. It is an act of tremendous courage, and in Brown’s words, courage means to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart, to be willing to be imperfect and to suffer. He identified the pot specifically with the walls of the city of Jerusalem and had the officials warning the people not to build close to it because that increased the danger to them, just as you don’t let meat get too close to the sides of a pot lest it burn.

Image: Michal Ben Hamu

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":683,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":683
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":683,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez11-pot-meat.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":683
Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967.
