Our<\/span> chapter<\/span><\/a> is a Biblical illustration of the saying \u201cactions speak louder than words.\u201d\u00a0 Ezekiel is told by God:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Son of Man, you dwell among the rebellious breed. They have eyes to see but see not, ears to hear but hear not; for they are a rebellious breed (verse 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Since Ezekiel\u2019s spoken prophecies were ineffective in causing his Judean contemporaries to repent their evil ways, God instructs the prophet to make himself, symbolically, into a physical portent of the impending catastrophe:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Go into exile from your home to another place before their very eyes; perhaps they will take note\u2026 for I make you a portent to the House of Israel\u2026 Say, I am a portent for you: As I have done, so shall it be done to them; they shall go into exile, into captivity (verses 3,6 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

To forcefully act out this dire prophecy, Ezekiel is told repeatedly to pack up and carry out his \u201cgear for exile\u201d, which he does. Significantly, a striking image of Judean exiles carrying their children and meager possessions is preserved in a<\/span> wall relief<\/span><\/a> from the palace at Nineveh, roughly contemporary with the tragic fulfillment of Ezekiel\u2019s prophecy of doom, the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Midrash Lamentations Rabbah<\/span><\/a> (see<\/span> Rashi<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Radak<\/span><\/a> on Ezekiel 12:3) describes in detail just what might be included in Ezekiel\u2019s \u201cgear for exile\u201d and how these possessions would be used. A leather flask, a rug, and a bowl. One places flour in the leather flask and places it beneath his head; one eats and drinks from a bowl; a rug is for sitting and to sleep upon. Another opinion is that the exiles would just take a container with four handles that holds everything. The Midrash goes on to imagine that the exiles were so confused that when one came to knead his dough but did not know with what, so he would dig in the ground and make a hole. He would knead it in it, and pebbles would stick to their dough. When he would put it in his mouth, his teeth would be blunted, as it says: \u201cHe has broken my teeth on gravel\u201d (<\/span>Lamentations 3:16<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, in the continuation of our chapter (<\/span>verses 18-19<\/span><\/a>), God tells Ezekiel:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Son of Man, eat your bread in trembling and drink your water in fear and anxiety. And say to the people of the land: Thus said the Lord God concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread in anxiety and drink their water in desolation, because their land will be desolate of its multitudes on account of the lawlessness of all its inhabitants<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There are many examples of such symbolic<\/span> sign acts<\/span><\/a> in the Hebrew Bible. These are non-verbal tools of prophecy, in which a prophet engages in some physical action designed to dramatically foretell the fulfillment of a particular prophecy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

O mortal, you dwell among the rebellious breed. They have eyes to see but see not, ears to hear but hear not; for they are a rebellious breed.\u201d (verse 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God opens the chapter with the oft-used metaphor, people with eyes who cannot see and ears but cannot hear. Similar comparisons to the people and to idols appear in Isaiah 32, Jeremiah 5, and Psalm 116. Why does God bring it up again here? In previous iterations, the references are to the people\u2019s interactions with idol worship and the idols themselves. These inanimate objects are just that, and yet the people ascribe human abilities to them. That in turn makes the people blind and deaf to the real world around them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this instance, however, the verse seems disconnected, misplaced. God describes the people as obstinate, and then moves on to Ezekiel\u2019s latest performative prophecy. Perhaps the performance and the introduction are linked. Despite the prophets that have warned the people, and the clear links between the deteriorating situation in Jerusalem and their actions, the people refuse to listen. Poetic prophecy and metaphorical actions have not swayed them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God goes back to basics. God commands Ezekiel to act out an exile. He is told to gather his belongings, get dressed for a long journey, and even tunnel through a wall to escape. There can be no question as to what he is doing. This is all happening right in front of the people. Their eyes have to see what is happening and their ears must hear what Ezekiel is doing. God is giving them one last chance to act on the most blunt display of their impending doom. Of course, even this will not be enough to convince the people that what they see and hear is about to happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In <\/span>our comments on Chapter 2<\/span><\/a>, we took note of the first appearance of the term \u201cHouse of Mutiny\u201d (<\/span>beit hameri<\/span><\/em>), a term used exclusively by Ezekiel. In this chapter alone, he utilized it several times (vs. 2,9,25). Of greater interest, perhaps, is v.3, in which God instructs him: \u201cTherefore, mortal, get yourself gear for exile, and go into exile by day before their eyes.\u201d Just what gear constitute \u201cgear for exile\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi and Kara, relying on the Midrash Kinot (\u201cLamentations,\u201d i.e., Eikhah<\/em>), described the gear as a vessel for water and a pottery shard for kneading and leavening dough. Radak enumerated the gear as a staff, a pack, a cup, a pitcher, and a plate. The relationship of the gear to the condition of exile according to Radak is obvious: these are the very basic things with which every traveler comes equipped; for the others, however, it is that the possession of these objects precludes the necessity to prepare bread on the ground. According to their midrashic source, the exiles of Jerusalem failed to heed Ezekiel\u2019s example, since they bemoaned \u201cthe gravel between our teeth\u201d (Lamentations 3:16) that, presumably, entered their dough during its preparation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Moshe Greenberg, characteristically combining traditional exegesis and modern scholarship, observed:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

An exile\u2019s pack is represented in Egyptian and Assyrian pictures of victories\u2026 It must have contained the barest necessities; R. Hiyya bar Abba (third-century C.E. Palestinian tanna) said: a skin, a mat, and a bowl, each doing double-duty\u2014the skin for holding flour (another version: water) and for use as a pillow; the mat for sitting and lying; the bowl for eating and drinking (Lamentations Rabba 1.23; another listing in BT Nedarim 40b replaces the skin by a lamp. (Anchor Bible <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i>, 209).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Zedekiah is not mentioned by name in the book of Ezekiel. The kingdom of Babylonia is likewise only mentioned in these chapters indirectly and there is no prophecy that deals with the future of Babylonia and its destruction in the upcoming group of chapters that offer prophecies to the nations. Because Ezekiel is based in Babylonia, he is unable to denounce the empire in which he dwells. For the kings of Babylonia, the coronation of Zedekiah in Jerusalem had the effect of creating an artificial quiet, while in effect discontinuing the monarchy of the dynasty of David in Jerusalem. Therefore, paying explicit attention to Zedekiah as king may have aroused the ire of the Babylonians.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Through a symbolic act, Ezekiel is commanded to \u201cexile\u201d himself, carry his \u201cgear for exile.\u201d The departure into exile is undertaken in the evening, in the dark, with his face covered, through a hole he digs in the wall. This prophecy is God\u2019s response to Zedekiah\u2019s rebellion against Babylonia, which contravenes God\u2019s order conveyed to him by the prophet. The descriptions in Kings and in Jeremiah of Zedekiah\u2019s exile match the details of Ezekiel\u2019s prophecy: the capture of the king, bringing him to Babylon, his judgement, blindness and the fate of his company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

12:27 \u201c\u2018Man, look, the house of Israel say, \u2018The vision that he sees, of many days hence and of faraway times he prophesies.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is a somewhat different formulation of dismissal of the prophecy from the proverb cited in verse 22. According to the proverb, with the passage of time it will be seen that the prophecy is entirely groundless. Here, the deniers say that these predictions of doom may someday be fulfilled, but that time is so distant that it is of no concern to them. Ezekiel, we should recall, is at this point prophesying no more than five years before the final destruction of the kingdom of Judah, so in fact his prediction will come about very soon and not \u201cin faraway times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. In front of their eyes<\/em>. The instruction to perform the symbolic act in the eyes of the community appears no less than seven times. In contrast to the symbolic actions in chapters 4-5, which were done inside the home, and it was not clear who they were intended to reach as an audience - here a central fact is that they bee seen.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. It will happen<\/em>. Whoever read the story of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, 12 chapters ago (Jeremiah 52, and also II Kings 25), the prophecy regarding the fate of the prince is even clearer. Zedekiah, who tried to escape the city at night, was captured by the Babylonians. He was taken to Babylonia but didn\u2019t see it - since he was cruelly punished by having his eyes gouged out.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Strong or weak<\/em>? Is the Exile a testament to God\u2019s weakness, or perhaps to His strength? Ezekiel\u2019s prophecy makes this clear. This is not God\u2019s failure to protect His people and His land, but the opposite: \u201cSo that they know that I am God\u201d )verse 15). The Exile reveals God\u2019s power to punish His people for violating the covenant.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. The airwaves are open<\/em>. Ezekiel is in Babylonia. But he knows how they think and what they are saying in Jerusalem, and in his prophecy he also addresses the residents of Jerusalem.
