This chapter can be separated into two sections, the male prophets and the female prophets. The male prophets are prophesying using speech. They claim that everything will be fine, when everything will not be fine. God compares their actions to someone who uses cheap plaster to fill the cracks in a crumbling wall. It may look fine under normal circumstances, but when faced with strong weather, the wall will collapse. God twice repeats that he will bring heavy storms to destroy the flimsy walls.

The prophetesses, on the other hand, dabble in a different type of prophecy. They are not making grand proclamations. Instead, they work with some sort of material objects. The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain. Rashi explains that this was similar to witchcraft of the Ov and Yedoni (“ghosts or familiar spirits”) mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:11, that would involve speaking from their extremities. These women would sew small cushions and place them under their arms and talk to spirits this way. Malbim explains that these were some type of perverse phylacteries. They would sew small cushions and place them on the arm and forehead in the same spot as phylacteries in order to tap into the spirits that live in those areas. Others explain that these were talismans that would be worn on hands or on fingers like rings to ward off demons. Like the male false prophets, God promises to rip these small pillows out of the hands of the prophetesses and throw them to the ground.

In both instances, God’s goal is not just to rebuke these false guides, but to target the very thing that they are using to try and persuade the people. However, while one of the biblical words for sorcery does appear in that section (k.s.m., in verse 23), it appears three times in the prophecy to the men (verses 6, 7, 9). There might be more description of the women’s methods than the men’s, and certainly the details offer much room for analysis, but it seems that male as well as female false prophets relied on some sort of fortune-telling technique to mislead those around them.

Rabbi Yechiel Tzvi Moskowitz, author of the Daat Mikra commentary on Ezekiel, suggests that one distinction between the men and women in this chapter might be found not (only) in what they did differently wrong, but what they didn’t do right – or what they could, or couldn’t, have done. “He does not rebuke [the women] for being ‘like jackals among ruins’ [v. 4], nor because they ‘didn’t go up in the breaches” and repair fences [v. 5], since the bounds of the prophetesses’ influence was more narrow.”

In Moskowitz’s view, the analogy of false prophets to jackals in ruins is about the destruction they wreak and perhaps also their cowardice: “When a person comes to a breach in the ruin, the jackal flees through another breach and doesn’t stand in the breach to fight” (quoting Rashi, from midrash). The prophet mocks these sneaky fakers, who take advantage wherever they find the nation vulnerable – when a true leader would get up in those breaches in the wall and patch them, to make the nation stronger. “Repairing fences… means [putting in] effort for the sake of the sinners, [to encourage their] repentance, and the decree would thus be cancelled.”

Moskowitz suggests this critique of the false prophets is relevant to the entire nation, while Ezekiel’s rebuke to the prophetesses is only relevant to those individuals who came to ask them. How can I feel the acute pain of separation when I’ve already been physically separated for months? The once distinct line between high school and the rest of my life feels blurred by my “coronacation.” We are living in a period of uncertainty: scared for our health and the health of our loved ones, the economy, the state of our world. When God first introduced the concept of prophecy to Moses, He stipulated, “the prophet that shall speak a word presumptuously in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die” (Deut. 18:20).

Our sages posit two interpretations for what constitutes a false prophet. In one instance, it is someone who knowingly makes up prophecies and offers them as the word of God or manipulates the word of God to fit their own agenda. That is characterized as insidious behavior. The other is that a false prophet arises when someone’s imagination deludes them into believing that they have the gift of prophecy and hear the word of God. But either way, the punishment for being a false prophet is the same. Why? Isn’t the latter case a mistake?

Rabbi Dr. Gidon Rothstein offers this explanation. Even if a false prophet was mistaken about a seemingly prophetic experience, if they were a good person, they would use whatever they thought they heard for good. But these false prophets took whatever they mistakenly heard or intentionally invented and used it to create “a flimsy wall “(v. 10). God points specifically to the false prophets’ attempts to exploit the people’s vulnerabilities and undermine the efforts of the true prophets whose intent was to elicit repentance. The false prophets tried to convince the people that there would be peace, and all would be well. That would certainly be the preferable message to hear when in dire straits, and thus the preferable prophet to follow. By intentionally creating divisiveness among the nation and preventing repentance among those who fell into their camp, they deserve the full punishment God intends.

This episode concludes with God commanding Ezekiel to tell these false prophets that their flimsy wall is going to fall apart, and the nation will understand that it had no foundation to begin with. It was enough for these opponents to remind their listeners that warnings as to the destruction had also been voiced in the past, and the passage of time showed that “that which was, is that which shall be”: Jerusalem would not be destroyed. God’s response is that before long their own claim will lose its relevance. The prophecies of the Destruction of Jerusalem will be realized soon, in their own days.

The second group that Ezekiel targets with his words consists of those who claim that their message is prophecy from God, while in fact they are making up their prophecies from their hearts. This shows even more clearly how complicated Ezekiel’s prophetic mission was. The difficulty in differentiating between true prophets and false ones arose from the fact that these were not two completely distinct and separate groups; they were not easily distinguishable from each other.

In this prophecy Ezekiel compares the false prophets to foxes (or jackals) reminiscent of the lamentation that follows the destruction in the book of Lamentations. Through their misleading words, the prophets have made themselves like the foxes that would soon wander among the ruins of the Temple. Ezekiel thereby connects the false prophecies with their results. Over the generations the fox came to symbolize the cause of the Destruction, the Destruction itself, but also the hope of a future redemption and rebuilding.

Posted in conjunction with hatanach.com.
