Then they shall know it was not without cause that I, GOD, resolved to bring this evil upon them (verse 10).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And you shall know that I am GOD, when your slain lie among the fetishes round about their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, under every green tree, and under every leafy oak\u2014wherever they presented pleasing odors to all their fetishes. will stretch out My hand against them, and lay the land waste and desolate in all their settlements, from the wilderness as far as Diblah; then they shall know that I am GOD (verse 14-15).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God tells Ezekiel that He is going to punish the people of Jerusalem for worshiping idols and not following God. Three times in the chapter God explains that doing so will allow the people to \u201cknow that I am God\u201d. This phrase appears hundreds of times in Tanach. It comes after God promises punishment to other nations:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Kings shall tend your children, Their queens shall serve you as nurses. They shall bow to you, face to the ground, And lick the dust of your feet. And you shall know that I am GOD \u2014 Those who trust in Me shall not be shamed (Isaiah 49:23).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It appears after God punishes the people:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, \u2018By evening you shall know it was God who brought you out from the land of Egypt\u2019 (Exodus 16:6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And also when he will save the people:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Know, therefore, that only the LORD your God is God, the steadfast God who keeps His covenant faithfully to the thousandth generation of those who love Him and keep His commandments (Deuteronomy 7:9).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The wide use of the phrase shows that God realizes that there are different motivations for the people to know God. Some do it out of love of God- when he provides rewards for his followers. Some follow God when he punishes their enemies. And sometimes, as in this chapter, people need to fear God and see God\u2019s wrath in order to follow God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

According to the Metzudat Tzion commentary, one exclaims \u201cach\u201d (\u05d0\u05d7) over both joy and pain.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is an exclamation Ezekiel is instructed to let loose as part of a physical expression of emotion with odd echoes in a well-known song. God tells him in 6:11 to \u201cclap your hands, and stamp your feet, and shout\u2026\u201d \u2013 not \u201churray,\u201d but \u201cach!\u201d So, is he happy or sad? (Does he know it?)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The context being fairly negative \u2013 \u201cvile abominations of the house of Israel,\u201d and the various punishments to be meted out for those abominations \u2013 we might assume the emotion here is one of pain. Malbim, however, sees joy in this \u201cach,\u201d as part of a larger picture of emotional complexity: \u201cstrike his hand and stamp his foot on the ground in anger over the vile abominations of the house of Israel \u2013 but on the other hand, he should say \u2018ach\u2019 and joy over the fact that God will punish them\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Focusing solely on the suffering, one might express pain through hands, feet, and voice. But for Malbim, the prophet is redirected to think of the sins that brought it on \u2013 to be upset about the sins themselves, and also <\/span>glad <\/span><\/i>for the impending punishment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Seems harsh, though perhaps understandable for God\u2019s representative in the very moment of divine retribution.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We might, however, suggest a further nuance based on the other instances of the word \u201cach\u201d that Malbim cites to support his contention:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1)<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Isaiah 44:16 describes various uses for wood: \u201cPart of it he burns in a fire\u2026 roasts meat, he eats the roast and is sated; he also warms himself and cries, \u2018Ach, I am warm! I can feel the heat!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2)<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Psalms 35:21 tells how David\u2019s enemies rejoice when he suffers just as they\u2019d wanted: \u201cThey open wide their mouths at me, saying, \u201cAch, ach, we have seen it!\u201d\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Maybe \u201cach\u201d doesn\u2019t express joy in the general sense, but a sense of satisfaction at finally perceiving what one had been hoping for \u2013 heat, revenge, or in the case of Ezekiel, knowledge of God (as in verses 10, 13, and 14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We don\u2019t often get to see things work out in the world just as we\u2019d like, with everyone getting what we think should be coming to them; life and God are too complex for anyone to claim that knowledge. But within the books of the Bible, particularly the Prophets, things are outlined in much simpler terms: people act, and God rewards or punishes; within the closed framework of the biblical text, reward and punishment are often quite clear. Perhaps Ezekiel\u2019s \u201cach\u201d is intended as a dramatic sigh of contentment at seeing God\u2019s justice play out, and at the accompanying sense of certainty about Him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Maybe the point is to be able to feel it all at once: pain on behalf of his people who are suffering, alongside some sense of satisfaction that God is God and (to echo the song) you know it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At the beginning of our Chapter, God tells Ezekiel: \u201cO Mortal Man (Ben-Adam), turn your face toward the mountains of Israel and prophesy to them and say: O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God. Thus said the Lord God to the mountains and the hills, to the streams and the valleys: See, I will bring a sword against you\u2026\u201d (Ezekiel 6:2-3). Similarly, at the beginning of Ezekiel, Chapter 36 God says: \u201cAnd you, O mortal, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say: O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord\u201d. Likewise, the later Prophet Micah is told: \u201cHear what the Lord is saying: Come, present [My] case before the mountains, and let the hills hear you pleading. Hear, you mountains, the case of the Lord \u2014 You firm foundations of the earth! For the Lord has a case against His people. He has a suit against Israel\u201d (Micah 6:1-2). Here, we have the basic elements of a metaphorical lawsuit: God is the plaintiff, the prophet is the attorney, the mountains are called as witnesses, and the defendant is the people of Israel. However, in Ezekiel, God and His prophet speak directly to \u201cthe mountains of Israel\u201d, apparently representing the whole of the Land of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Jerusalemite scholar known as the Hida\u2019 (Rabbi Hayyim David Azulai), in his Homat Ana\u201dkh Tanakh commentary (Pisa 1801) provides a brief interpretation of God\u2019s command to Ezekiel: \u201cturn your face toward the mountains\u2026 and say: O mountains of Israel, hear! It is possible that every mountain has a Sar (a celestial \u201cprince\u201d or \u201cpatron-angel\u201d, see Daniel 10:13, 20,21; 12:1) above and it is against these Sarim that He [i.e. God through the Prophet Ezekiel] speaks. And similarly, the hills and such like have Sarim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But, why should Ezekiel and God speak to inanimate objects like mountains as if they are alive? Why should God \u201cbring a sword\u201d against the mountains? The answer comes without delay \u2013 because of the \u201chigh places -- bamot\u201d, sites of idolatrous worship on the mountains. Indeed, it is later emphasized that Ezekiel is condemning Israel\u2019s continuing to sacrifice on the \u201chigh places \u2013 bamot\u201d (see I Kings 14:22-24). God again says to Ezekiel: \u201c\u2026By this too your fathers affronted Me and committed trespass against Me: When I brought them to the land that I had sworn to give them, and they saw any high hill or any leafy tree, they slaughtered their sacrifices there and presented their offensive offerings there; there they produced their pleasing odors and poured out their libations. Then I said to them, What (mah) is the high place (bamah) to which you come (ba)?! Therefore, to this day its name shall be called \u201cba-mah \u2013 come-what\u201d (Ezekiel 20:27-29).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

After the building of the Temple in Jerusalem, worship at the <\/span>bamot <\/span><\/i>was forbidden and never again permitted, becoming part of our historical \u201cheritage -- nahalah\u201d (see Deuteronomy 12:1-14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, we encounter a word that is interpreted in opposite ways by different exegetes. God instructed Ezekiel: \u201cStrike your hands together and stamp your feet and cry: Aha! over all the vile abominations of the House of Israel who shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence (11).\u201d We already identified the sword, famine, and pestilence (see Chapter 5) as the quintessential instruments of God\u2019s punishment; the question here is: What kind of cry is \u201cAha!\u201d (<\/span>ach<\/span><\/i>)? Rashi and Yosef Kara identified it as a cry of anguish (Rashi: <\/span>yagon<\/span><\/i>) and wailing (Kara: <\/span>nehi<\/span><\/i>), and Radak treated it, onomatopoeically, as <\/span>oy vavoy<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Malbim, on the other hand, said \u201cit pertains to joy\u201d (<\/span>simchah<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These exegetes are consistent in their treatment of this interjection when it appears later in Ezekiel 21:20; however, when it assumes the slightly different form of <\/span>he\u2019ach<\/span><\/i>, the consistency seems to dissolve, and all adopt Malbim\u2019s definition. Likewise, in Isaiah 44:16, Rashi explained it as \u201ca word one says upon experiencing pleasure,\u201d Eliezer of Beaugency interpreted it as \u201can expression of jocularity and the satisfaction of desire,\u201d and Radak even used the word <\/span>simchah, <\/span><\/i>joy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The exegetical onus, in the case of our chapter, seems to fall on Malbim whose interpretation of <\/span>ach<\/span><\/i> as joy not only contradicts that of his medieval predecessors, but seems to fly in the face of the straightforward meaning of the verse. What kind of joy can evolve from a situation in which the House of Israel is suffering?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The surprising answer, to use Malbim\u2019s own words, is \u201cthat God was punishing them.\u201d Since time immemorial, people have experienced war, famine, and pestilence. (I write these comments as the corona virus grows more menacing daily.) If they are merely accidents of history or of nature, then they are fearsome because they serve no purpose and seemingly have no end. However, if I view them as acts of God, they assume moral purpose and clarity, and I have confidence that once they have served their purpose they will cease.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

How sure am I of this? As sure as one can be who regularly recites the opening line of <\/span>tachanun<\/span><\/i> (drawn from 2 Samuel 24:14): \u201c[King] David said to [the prophet] Gad: I am greatly distressed; let me fall into the arms of God whose compassion is manifold and not fall into the hands of man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew appears to say \u201cI am broken,\u201d <\/span>nishbarti<\/span><\/i>. Many interpreters, medieval and modern, understand this to mean, \u201cI am brokenhearted,\u201d but there are no other instances where the verb \u201cto break\u201d is used elliptically in this manner to mean \u201cbrokenhearted.\u201d Either this is a case in which the passive form takes an active sense, or, more likely, it is a scribal error for the active form, <\/span>shavarti<\/span><\/i>, triggered by the similar form of the immediately preceding verb <\/span>nishbu<\/span><\/i>, \u201cwere captive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. The mountains of Israel (v. 2)<\/em>. This is the metonymic term to refer to the entire land and all its various landscapes - hills and valleys. And if you\u2019re looking for some comfort after this sort of prophecy, it can be found in another 30 chapters, in Ezekiel 36.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Idolatry<\/em>, all types. Altars, shrines, incense stands, fetishes, pleasing odors\u2026 The prophecy is full of professional idolatrous terminology, and so emphasizes the depth of the decadence, and the nature of the reaction.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Total betrayal<\/em>. Verse 9 reminds us that idolatry isn\u2019t just one more misdeed. In the relationship between the people and their God - this is the ultimate betrayal and breach of loyalty.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Just so they know<\/em>.
