they are going to have to retract what they said. The idiom conveys shame or defeat. Perhaps when we eat our words, we feel the embarrassment of having to go back on what we said, as if the words we had spoken were somehow bitter or rotten, and now we must suffer their consequences. Sometimes, we must eat our words as a sign of our defeat, as if they are a bitter poison we had intended to wield against someone else.

But in this chapter, as Ezekiel is called by God to be God’s prophet among the Israelites, Ezekiel is made to literally eat his words just as God charges him to faithfully fulfill his mission. The implication is that these are the words that Ezekiel is to deliver as prophecy to the Israelites, for God has warned him that he must persevere even if the people don’t listen. Though the English expression “to eat your words” was not part of the Biblical Hebrew vernacular, there is a sense in this chapter that Ezekiel might want to retract his words someday, rather than continue prophesying to the rebellious Israelites. The role of the prophet is not to bring about repentance but rather to convey God’s word and thereby justify the imminent punishment. Therefore when he is commanded to eat the scroll, he is ambivalent. Just as the scroll contains lamentations, with no hint of redemption, so too Ezekiel’s prophecy includes, initially, only the coming of the Destruction.

Nonetheless, there is a message that the prophet addresses to each individual in his generation: the Temple is going to be destroyed, and the nation will be exiled from its land, but every person bears personal responsibility for his own fate, because even at this most bitter time there will be those who will die and those who will be saved. And it is known that this ‘name’ is not a disgrace and is also not praise.” What’s the big deal about the fact that Ezekiel is human; why does it have to be highlighted every time he’s addressed?

Several commentaries suggest that in the context of having experienced the profound vision of chapter one, Ezekiel needed to be brought down a notch, reminded of his humanity. “He called him ‘son of Adam’ so he would not become arrogant and think himself like one of the angels, because he’d seen this great vision” (Metzudat David). In this approach, Ezekiel’s humanity isn’t bad, per se, but it is less-than. He has seen such lofty sights that he needs to regain balance, to remain grounded, through repeated reminders that he is not so lofty himself.

On the other hand, humans – as humans – have some loftiness to us too. Rabbi Dr. Joseph Breuer suggests Ezekiel is referred to as “son of man” as a constant reminder of his role as part of the great destiny of the Jewish people, specifically in relation to all of humanity: If the children of Israel are to be a light unto the many children of Adam, they must see themselves as part of that larger picture – and their prophet all the more so.

The lofty mission of the Jewish people, and the destiny of humanity as a whole, may not be angelic, but midrashic tradition likes to point out the advantage in that: only humans can actualize God’s laws; angels are incapable of fulfilling His purpose for the world. So Ezekiel’s humanity might be neither disgraceful nor praiseworthy, as Abarbanel noted – but it is both grounded and divine.

Perhaps Ezekiel’s nickname is meant to both emphasize and bridge the gap, to remind him that while there is vast difference between what he saw and what he is, he – and his people – have tremendous potential and responsibility to transcend it by working towards their divine purpose.

And as the prophet of the exile, he pursues that goal surrounded by a similar gap: reminders of the distance between the Jewish people and the divine presence on one hand, and the eternal fact of their mission in His Name on the other. They may be distant, but they can and must move towards each other.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-vitruvian-man-4995947_1280.png","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":1115,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-vitruvian-man-4995947_1280.png","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":1115
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-vitruvian-man-4995947_1280.png","1536x1536-width":1280,"1536x1536-height":1115,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-vitruvian-man-4995947_1280.png","2048x2048-width":1280,"2048x2048-height":1115
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. He unrolled it before me, and it was inscribed on both the front and the back; on it were written lamentations, dirges, and woes” (Ezekiel 2:10).

The scroll being described here, unusually for a scroll, written on both the front and back sides, is what is known in ancient booklore as an opisthograph. This relatively rare form of the scroll was used primarily to make maximum use of writing surfaces in situations of poverty resulting in a lack of writing materials.

Avot de-Rabbi Natan, Chapter 25 preserves a tradition about this divinely communicated scroll. At the hour of his death, Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai raised his voice and cried. His students said to him: Rabbi! You are a tall pillar, a light to the world, a mighty hammer; so why do you cry? He said to them: Am I going to face a human king? If he were angry with me, it would be only in this world. And if he imprisoned me or killed me, it would be only in this world. And what’s more, I would be able to pacify him with words, or bribe him with money. But no, I am going to face the King of all kings, the Holy One Blessed be He. And if He is angry with me, it will be in this World and in the World to Come. And what’s more, I cannot pacify Him with words or bribe Him with money. So, I have two paths before me: one that leads to Paradise, and one that leads to Gehenna, and I do not know if He will force me into Gehenna or bring me into Paradise. For the verse says about Him: “All they that go down to the dust shall kneel before Him” (Psalms 22:30). When telling of the death of Moses, how he breathed his last breath, died and was gathered to his people, God says: “I will remove my hand” (Exodus 33:23). Similarly, Ezekiel says: “As I looked, there was a hand stretched out to me, holding a written scroll. He unrolled it before me, and it was inscribed on both the front and the back; on it were written lamentations and dirges…” (Ezekiel 2:9-10). “On the front” refers to this World; “on the back” refers to the World to Come. Another interpretation: “On the front” refers to the sufferings of the righteous in this world and the tranquility of the wicked in this world. “On the back” refers to the reward for the righteous in the Future to Come, and the punishment for the wicked in Gehenna. The verse from Ezekiel continues: “And on it were written lamentations and dirges…” (Ezekiel 2:10). “Lamentations” refers to the punishment of the wicked in this world. “Dirges” refers to the reward for the righteous in the Time to Come.

Image: Ezekiel given scroll, woodcut, Julius Schnorr von Karolsfeld (detail), 1860 / wikipedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-ez-given-scroll.jpg","1536x1536-width":775,"1536x1536-height":448,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-ez-given-scroll.jpg","2048x2048-width":775,"2048x2048-height":448
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-ez-given-scroll.jpg","1536x1536-width":775,"1536x1536-height":448,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/ez2-ez-given-scroll.jpg","2048x2048-width":775,"2048x2048-height":448
Robert Alter is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at the University of California at Berkeley, where he has taught since 1967.
