Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. Similar oracles against Moab are preserved in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.15.1-16.14?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 15-16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cThe Moab Pronouncement\u201d), and briefly in\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Ezekiel.25.8-11?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ez. 25:8-11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Zephaniah.2.8-11?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeph. 2:8-11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Numbers.24.17?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Num. 24:17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moab is mentioned frequently in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/BDB%2C_%D7%9E%D6%B7%C2%B7?lang=bi&amp;p2=BDB%2C_%D7%9E%D7%95%D6%B9%D7%90%D6%B8%D7%91&amp;lang2=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as an individual, the son of Lot, who becomes the eponymous ancestor of the Moabite nation (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.19.36-37?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen. 19:36-37<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nation of Moab is also mentioned in extra-biblical sources, first in a 13<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE Egyptian inscription, which lists<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishencyclopedia.com\/articles\/10898-moab\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mu'ab (i.e. Moab)<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among nations conquered by Ramses II. The \u201cland of Moab\u201d is mentioned in an 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE cuneiform inscription on an Assyrian<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/object\/W_K-3751\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clay tablet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discovered in Nimrud in the 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. This tablet also preserves the first known archeological reference to Judah (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaudaya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Curiously, a 7<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE Neo-Assyrian royal inscription mentions a king of Moab named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musuri, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that is, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asor.org\/anetoday\/2023\/03\/egyptian-king-moab\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Egyptian.\"<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the much discussed 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century BCE<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhistory.org\/Moabite_Stone_%5bMesha_Stele%5d\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moabite stone, the Mesha Stele<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Mesha&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mesha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the king of Moab (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/II_Kings.3.4-27?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">II Kings 3:4-27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) thanks his deity<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Kemosh&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kemosh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for deliverance of the Moabites from Israelite rule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am Mesha, son of Kemosh, king of Moab\u2026Kemosh saved me from all the kings and caused me to triumph over all my adversaries. As for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Omri&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, king of Israel, he humbled Moab many years, for Kemosh was angry at his land. And his son (i.e.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Ahab&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) followed him and he also said, \"I will humble Moab.\" In my time he spoke (thus). But I have triumphed over him and over his house, while Israel has perished forever!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This inscription and the related Biblical texts tell of similar events but each from their own national perspectives. Mesha, King of Moab, in his own first-person account, comes out triumphant, while in Jeremiah and the other biblical oracles against Moab, Moab is defeated by Israel (for example,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/II_Samuel.8.2?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">II Samuel 8:2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Curiously, at the end of Jeremiah\u2019s prophecies of doom on Moab, our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Jeremiah.48?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chapter concludes<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a positive promise: \u201cBut I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the days to come\u2014declares the Lord\u201d, followed by a brief closing summary: \u201cThus far is the judgment on Moab.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This positive note is incorporated in an eschatological<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Otzar_Midrashim%2C_Midrashim_on_The_Messiah%2C_Introduction.2?lang=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash on the Messiah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A scepter shall go forth from Israel. It smashes the brow of Moab\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Numbers.24.17?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numbers 24:17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This teaches that Israel shall gather in the Upper Galilee and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/search?q=Messiah%20ben%20Yosef&amp;tab=text&amp;tvar=1&amp;tsort=relevance&amp;svar=1&amp;ssort=relevance\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Messiah ben Yosef<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will watch over them from the Galilee. They go up to Jerusalem and the Messiah will rebuild the Temple and offer sacrifices as fire descends from Heaven. Then he will crush all the Nations of the World. He will come upon the land of Moab, killing half (of the Moabites), and the rest he will take prisoner and they offer him tribute. But in the end, he makes peace with Moab, as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Jeremiah.48.47?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cBut I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the days to come\u2014declares the Lord.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p The basic structure of the series is that at the beginning of each episode, one character has a premonition of a horrific accident that will occur. That individual then warns a group of people to avoid the location of the horrific accident. The accident occurs and the group is relieved. The problem is that the people in the group were meant to die in the accident. The rest of the movie is \u201cdeath\u201d following the saved people around as they all die in horrific albeit campy ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In chapter 48, Jeremiah turns his wrath against Israel\u2019s old foe, Moab. Two verses in the chapter may sound familiar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terror and pit and trap upon you who dwell in Moab! - declares the LORD. He who flees from the terror shall fall into the pit; And he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the trap. For I will bring upon Moab the year of their doom \u2014declares the LORD\u201d(verses 43-44).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This verse is almost identical to a verse in Isaiah:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terror, and pit, and trap upon you who dwell on earth! Whoever flees at the report of the terror shall fall into the pit; And whoever climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the trap. For sluices are opened on high, and earth\u2019s foundations tremble.\u201d (Isaiah 24:17-18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would Jeremiah borrow from Isaiah here? Chapter 24 of Isaiah does not discuss Moab. Isaiah there does not address a nation directly, but it is part of a section of the book wherein the prophet condemns the nations of the world. Perhaps then, Jeremiah repeats this prophecy again towards Moab as a way to remind the nation that they cannot escape the fate of the nations that harm Israel. Moab will face the same fate as the characters in a Final Destination movie. They may feel they have avoided Isaiah\u2019s prophecy for now, but Jeremiah repeats the prophecy to make sure they remember the words. A nation may feel it has escaped punishment, but punishment will find them. They may have escaped the terror, but they will then fall into a pit. If they manage to climb out of a pit, they will find themselves ensnared in a trap. Mentioning roofs and squares together portrays a grief that pours out in every direction, enhancing the reader\u2019s sense of just how bad things could be.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak explains, \u201cOn all the roofs of Moab \u2013 in the open. Lamentation will be on the roofs, where people will see them; and similarly, in the squares.\u201d For Radak, the significant detail about roofs and squares is their openness, and he is careful to note that the point is the same for both.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading this verse in the midst of COVID-19 and \u201csocial distancing,\u201d however, I was struck not by the similarity but by a difference between \u201croofs\u201d and \u201csquares\u201d: A roof is part of one\u2019s house and might still be isolated from others, while public squares, these days, are off-limits. We sit apart from each other, confined to our own homes and avoiding the mass gatherings that might take place in a \u201csquare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that is precisely where Radak\u2019s point about the similarity becomes crucial.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason the openness of roofs and squares is important, says Radak, is that they are \u201cseen.\u201d It\u2019s a modern buzzword, to talk about one being \u201cseen\u201d in one\u2019s pain, but it seems the human need for that visibility is ancient. Radak\u2019s comment suggests a sorrow that bursts out of the Moabite homes to be seen \u2013 to be shared. It\u2019s a shared pain both because everyone is suffering it and because they see each other suffering it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as we sense the painful difference between lamenting on one\u2019s own rooftop and coming together in the square, perhaps Radak has a point: Both roofs and squares are visible to others. Even in Radak\u2019s day, even in Jeremiah\u2019s \u2013 and certainly with today\u2019s world wide web of connection \u2013 individuals in crisis could be visible to each other, could see each other, could be with each other even while physically separate.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not only lamentation that can be shared from rooftop to rooftop. The image of each Moabite lamenting alone on a rooftop echoes the balcony wedding celebrations and other socially-distant gatherings that have taken place in recent weeks, people sharing their joy from balcony to balcony in the same way Moabites might have shared their lamentations from rooftop to rooftop.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will always be joys to celebrate, and creative ways to display and share our joys as well as our sorrows \u2013 on each rooftop for now, and similarly, when we can finally descend and join together again in the public For the Israelites to cross (from east to west) into its Promised Land, they had to traverse the territories of Ammon, Moab, Edom, and the Amorites. However, God had prohibited them from provoking the first three, who were related to them (Ammon and Moab through Lot, and Edom\/Seir through Esau), or from crossing through their territories, so they were forced into a confrontation with Sihon, King of the Amorites (Numbers 21:21 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a successful military engagement, Israel occupied the land of the Amorites, which also included territory that the Moabites had lost to the Amorites in an earlier war. The Torah celebrated that victory as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, the bards would recite: \u201cCome to Heshbon; firmly built and well-founded is Sihon\u2019s city. For fire went forth from Heshbon, flame from Sihon\u2019s city, consuming Ar of Moab, the lords of Bamoth by the Arnon. Woe to you, O Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! This is a prophecy to Moab. Israel is mentioned in it only as a side note, and only in order to explain the Moabite disappointment that their gods were not able to prevent their destruction, just as the Temple at Beit El did not prevent the destruction of Samaria: \u201cAnd Moab shall be shamed because of Chemosh, as the House of Israel were shamed because of Bethel, on whom they relied\u201d (verse 13).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Sound familiar<\/em>? 99 chapters ago in Isaiah 15-16, we read a prophecy about Moab that has some very similar verses. It is possible that both Isaiah and Jeremiah included parts of an older prophetic epic about the destruction of Moab, and each of their prophecies elaborate and elucidate it, in its own way.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Lists<\/em>. The prophecy of this chapter includes lists of Moabite towns and place names. Scholars have tried to find some rhyme or reason to these references, and some have come to the conclusion that there is no order. That might be the message: confusion and disarray everywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Empathy or irony<\/em>? What tone should we use when we read the prophecy? Is there meant to be some sort of empathy for the affliction of Moab (such as in verses 17, 31 or 36), and recommendations as to how to minimize the damage (such as in verses 6 and 28)? Or is it best read as jeering the overweening enemy who has been punished?
