For example, the biblical word [seren] used to describe Philistine princes may be cognate with the Greek [tyrannos] meaning “lord, master” and the origin of the English word “tyrant.”

A tradition of the Philistines coming from the Aegean is reflected in the Bible. And yet, throughout the book of Jeremiah, God is also a source of anger, destruction, vengeance, and tragedy. In Jeremiah 47, God promises to inflict such devastation on the Philistines that “parents will not turn to help their children” (v. 3). Parents will feel so helpless that they will turn their eyes from their children so that they won’t see the harm done to them.

This is a horrific image. And it is attributed to divine origin. It’s upsetting. Even the text seems a bit flustered. “Why won’t you stop?!” a voice cries out (v. 6). It’s not clear whether this voice is Jeremiah’s or God’s, relayed through Jeremiah. But the passage is unambiguous that this suffering is unstoppable because it is divine will. The verse begs for relief but knows that no respite will come. The “you” invoked (who won’t stop) is “the sword of God.” So perhaps somehow God is simultaneously destroying and asking God’s own self, “why won’t you stop?”

What are we to make of that? Is God trapped in a cycle of violence? Maybe the text is meant as a reflection of painful human reality. It’s not a value judgment or theological assertion, but a statement of fact, reflecting the series of betrayals that humans inevitably commit, and their consequences. So Israel will suffer, and so the nations will suffer. They all face punishment for their transgressions: Israel worshipping other gods and other nations harming Israel. We might be tempted to read this passage with satisfaction, noting that God’s revenge is taken on our behalf. After all, God is destroying the Philistine enemy. But this passage comes on the heels of chapter after chapter of destruction inflicted on the Israelites. It’s hard not to feel a sort of desperate sympathy. Whatever your nation, you’ll face divine wrath. And there’s not much room for self-satisfaction. So maybe it’s a chapter that gives a sense of smallness, let’s call it humility, in the onslaught of unavoidable violence, whether directed against us or against others. There isn’t much space for pride when everyone is struck low.

But we aren’t left with only powerlessness. Jeremiah also gives a sustaining promise: powers may rise and fall, there will be times of boon and of emptiness, Israel will suffer as all nations will suffer, but the thread of the Jewish people will never be entirely severed. Israel may be winnowed or dispersed, but God will not break the covenant (33:20). Maybe that strand of hope keeps us persevering in the face of overwhelming assault. The question treated by the exegetes was: At which point in history did this occur?

Rashi, Kara, and Radak all relied, here, on a rabbinic tradition recorded in Seder Olam, the definitive rabbinic study of chronology. As reported by Radak:

When Pharaoh’s army left Egypt, the Chaldeans [i.e., Babylonians] were besieging Jerusalem in the tenth year of King Zedekiah [587]. The Chaldeans got wind of this and left Jerusalem. When Pharaoh heard that they had left Jerusalem on his account, he took his army and leveled Gaza, and returned home. At that time, God told Jeremiah that the Chaldean army would come and destroy the land of the Philistines.

A problem with this interpretation is that the previous chapter (see our comments) was set against the backdrop of the earlier encounter between the Egyptians and Babylonians at Carchemish in 609 BCE. Considering this, Shadal* offered a different interpretation:

It appears that Pharaoh Necho struck Gaza during the reign of Josiah, prior to departing Egypt to do battle against the King of Assyria (2 Kings 23:29). The intention behind this warning (preceding Pharaoh’s strike against Gaza) was to notify Jeremiah about the approach of Nebuchadnezzar to Philistia prior to the wars of Nebuchadnezzar [against Judah], at a time that it would not occur to anyone that the Philistines would be attacked from the north.

My own observation is this: There were five principal cities of the Philistines: Gaza, Ashkelon, Ekron, Gath, and Ashdod. Our chapter mentions Gaza and Ashkelon by name (5), but also incorporates a general reference to “the seashore” (7), which likely includes all the remaining cities. So while Ashdod is not mentioned by name, it is noticeable that v. 4 repeats the word “ravage” (Hebrew: lishdod, <span
