Eventually nothing is left of the contract except a single clause.

The scene is hilarious - in stark contrast to the scene described in today’s chapter. Jeremiah’s scribe, Baruch, has painstakingly written down in a scroll all that Jeremiah has prophesied to date. At Jeremiah’s bidding, Baruch reads the scroll before the people who have gathered to fast and, we assume, to repent. Word reaches the palace: palace officials urge Barukh and Jeremiah to hide as the scroll is brought to king Jehoiakim, who has it read before him only to slice it into pieces as column after column is read to him. He throws the pieces on the fire.

This is not the only time in our tradition that a scroll comes into contact with flame at the hands of a ruling power. Years later, Rabbi Hananiah ben Teradyon will defy a Roman edict and continue to teach Torah to his students. For this, he is sentenced to be wrapped in a Torah scroll and burned to death. When asked by his students what he sees, he replies, “The parchment is burning, but the letters are flying free! The tearing up of scrolls or the burning of words cannot destroy their meaning. The letters of the Torah scroll outlast their temporary home. In the same way, Jeremiah’s words continue to exist in his mind long enough for him to re-dictate them to Baruch. Even if (God forbid!) there were a fire destroying all of my possessions, my files would be safe in the cloud.

Jeremiah was not writing a dissertation, but something far more important – he was prophesying the word of God. Jeremiah had long prophecies in his head that he needed to deliver to King Jehoiakim and the people of Judah. God instructed Jeremiah to dictate all of his prophecies since the time of King Josiah to his scribe Baruch ben Neriah, and then have his scribe read the scroll to the people in hopes that it would lead them to repentance. Word of this book got out to the ministers of King Jehoiakim, and they ordered it to be read to them. The ministers took it to heart and ordered that it also be read directly to the King, who was, in fact, the son of King Josiah. Josiah was the King who, during renovations to the Holy Temple, was presented with a newly found, but long-forgotten Torah scroll (2 Kings 22). When he was read the portion that the scroll was open to – about repentance – he tore his clothes in mourning for the loss of religious life and Torah knowledge. His son, however, in being presented with a similar message through Jeremiah, did the opposite. As the scroll of Jeremiah’s prophecies was read to him, King Jehoiakim only heard it as a prophesy of his own downfall, and his loss of power. His response was to systematically tear the scroll itself into pieces and burn each piece until nothing was left. If it was going to threaten his reign, then no one else was going to hear a dissenting opinion, even if it was the word of God.

But Jehoiakim underestimated who he was dealing with. The response to book-burning and to silencing the truth came swiftly from God. The answer then, which should be the answer for all time, was: write it again, and make it even more compelling (Jeremiah 36:27-32)."

Photo by: Patrick Correia, Book Burning, 2007 / wikimedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer36-Book_burning.jpg","1536x1536-width":450,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer36-Book_burning.jpg","2048x2048-width":450,"2048x2048-height":600
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer36-Book_burning.jpg","1536x1536-width":450,"1536x1536-height":600,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer36-Book_burning.jpg","2048x2048-width":450,"2048x2048-height":600
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. It may be recalled that Jeremiah previously entrusted to Baruch two deeds of land purchase, instructing him “to put them into an earthen jar, so that they may last a long time” (32:12-16). Baruch now serves as Jeremiah’s scribe, secretary, spokesman, confidant and counselor (see also 43:3 and 45:1). Jeremiah, who is in hiding, instructs Baruch to read out in the Temple, the scroll of Jeremiah’s prophecies of doom on the Judeans as punishment for their disobedience. However, the Judean King Jehoiakim destroys this scroll in anger as it is read out to him. At the end of our chapter we are told: “So Jeremiah got another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah. And at Jeremiah’s dictation, he wrote in it the whole text of the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned; and more of the like was added” (Jeremiah 36:32).

Baruch continued to intrigue those who lived beyond Biblical times. These traditions are included in four pseudepigraphic works known simply as “The Book of Baruch” (I Baruch), which is a composite work. The first part is a prose letter that Baruch reads to the King Jehoiachin and the other Babylonian exiles, which causes them to repent and send money as an offering to the Temple. This part of the work, apparently based on a Hebrew original, was included in the Jewish 3rd century BCE Greek translation of what was then regarded as Scripture, the Septuagint. Many Christians include these works, known collectively as the “Apocrypha”, in their versions of the Bible. The second part of this “Book of Baruch” consists of two poems, the first of which admonishes Israel to return to the worship of God. The second poem describes the plight of Israel in Exile and promises future redemption. The work as a whole may have been compiled sometime between 100 BCE to 100 CE.

The Syriac Apocalypse of Baruch (II Baruch) seems to have originally been written in Hebrew sometime after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE. The chapter opens in the fourth year of Jehoiakim's reign, which is the first year of Nebuchadnezzar's. The prophet is commanded to take a scroll and record all his prophecies, from Josiah's reign until now, from 627 through 605 BCE. He wishes to compose a document that will open the people's hearts. Jeremiah's main problem is that he has remained unknown. For years, no one paid him any heed; he was overlooked in the streets of Jerusalem, and his own village rejected him. After Josiah's death, Jeremiah begins to receive negative attention around the Temple and the palace. The people continue blindly following the Temple prophets and priests, who feed them a fixed formula: The Temple will protect us; loyalty to Egypt is our mainstay; and fealty to the king is our future. These sound bites stifle any public discontent.

For years, Jeremiah has been trying to improve society's character and mend society's moral fabric. He has long abandoned his prophecies of doom regarding idol worship. Local leaders have weakened the crucial link between improving society and remaining on the land. They have convinced the people that their possession of the land is unassailable. Jeremiah writes his scroll for use when this wall of denial begins to crack: "Perhaps the House of Judah will hear all the evil I am planning to do to [it], so that each man will return from his wicked ways, and I will forgive their sins and iniquities" (36:3). Jeremiah clings to a single thread of hope that the people will repent and the terrible decree will be revoked.

Lau, Binyamin. Jeremiah: The Fate of a Prophet. Baruch, elsewhere given the epithet of “scribe,” was probably a professional scribe, but he also served as Jeremiah’s personal amanuensis, in all likelihood not for pay but out of devotion to the prophet.
