Neither he nor his courtiers nor the people of the land gave heed to the words which the Lord spoke through the prophet Jeremiah” (Jeremiah 37:1-2). He would go around to the Gates of Jerusalem, saying: “And the Lord said to me: Do not say: I am still a boy. But go wherever I send you and speak whatever I command you” (Jeremiah 1:7). I cannot be silent” (Jeremiah 4:19). Jeremiah asked God: Was I created for this suffering?! The Chaldeans (i.e., Babylonians) are getting ready to conquer Jerusalem again, this time threatening to destroy it completely. Jeremiah decides to start a new life outside of Jerusalem. However, as he is leaving the city, he is arrested. He is accused of defecting to the Chaldeans. He claims this accusation is a lie, but Jeremiah is beaten and imprisoned anyway.

Embedded in this arrest story is a fascinating subtext. The guard officer who arrests him is Irijah son of Shelemiah son of Hananiah. For close readers of Jeremiah, the name Hananiah might ring a bell. Back in Chapter 28, we met Hananiah son of Azzur who was described there by Jeremiah as a false prophet.

Hananiah prophesied that God would break the yoke of the Babylonians and that those who had already been taken into exile by Nebuchadnezzar would return. Jeremiah prophesies against Hananiah, declaring that God will punish him for his disloyalty. Although Jeremiah is technically delivering God’s word, Jeremiah’s words against Hananiah are anything but kind. They could even be seen as a curse. As foretold, Hananiah dies later that same year.

Irijah had very good reasons not to like Jeremiah – he probably saw Jeremiah as complicit or even directly responsible for his grandfather’s death. For his part, Jeremiah does not seem upset over Hananiah’s death and may even be happy about it. One can also understand Irijah’s assumption that Jeremiah is in cahoots with the Babylonians – after all, Jeremiah has spent his entire prophetic career predicting the destruction of Judah by their hand.

One of the most striking features of this situation is Jeremiah’s total lack of self-awareness and sensitivity towards others. Imprisoned, with his life on the line, Jeremiah speaks to King Zedekiah. In verse 18, he asks what wrong he has done to deserve such treatment. In verse 19, he seems to mock the dead, sardonically asking where the false prophets are (such as Hananiah and others like him) who thought Judah would be spared. Then, in verse 20, Jeremiah begs for his life.

Jeremiah shows no recognition of the consequences of his actions. Perhaps people want to kill him not because of the content of his prophecies, but because he is unkind, vindictive, and self-righteous.

Jeremiah offers us a chance to reconsider how we see ourselves. It has no chance of surviving against this mighty empire. All the prophets from the school of Hananiah son of Azzur, who promised and prophesied the impending fall of Babylonia, are struck dumb and flee underground. No one imagined that the prophecies of Jeremiah, of all people, would come to fruition. Rumors of the fall of the cities of the Shephelah have reached Jerusalem, leaving it in turmoil. The elders, priests, and people gather to fast and pray, in the best Jewish tradition. In addition, there has been no rain for two winters. It is clear to all that only God's mercy can bring relief. King Zedekiah sends delegates to Jeremiah, inviting him to lead a communal prayer for God's mercy. This invitation recalls Zedekiah's great-grandfather Hezekiah's invitation to Isaiah for similar purposes before the fearful invasion of the Assyrian king Sennacherib in 701 BCE:

“[Hezekiah] sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered in sackcloth, to Isaiah son of Amoz. When Assyria invaded Judah, destroyed entire cities, and stood on Jerusalem's doorstep, Hezekiah begged Isaiah — whose prophecies were sadly proven right — to pray on the city's behalf.
