This Israelite general has already been mentioned briefly at the end of the Second Book of Kings, in the two previous chapters of Jeremiah (40-41) and in his story will conclude in the following chapter of Jeremiah (43). Johanan first appears as one of those Judean officers, apparently led by Ishmael son of Nethaniah, who came to Gedaliah after they heard that he had been appointed governor by the King of Babylon (see II Kings 25:23). This brief notice is repeated in Jeremiah 40:8, but then we learn that it was Johanan who, together with his troops, warns Gedaliah that Ishmael is planning to assassinate him. But Gedaliah replied to Jeremiah: “What you are saying about Ishmael is not true!” (Jeremiah 40:13-16). When Johanan hears of Gedaliah’s assassination, he and his troops pursue Ishmael and rescues all those whom Ishmael had taken prisoner. Ishmael and eight of his men manage to escape and flee to the Ammonites. For fear of being erroneously implicated by the Babylonians in the assassination of Gedaliah, Johanan and all those with him set out to flee to Egypt (ch. 41).

In our Chapter, Johanan and his followers approach Jeremiah, pleading with the prophet to pray for them and to ask God what they should do. After ten days, the reply comes insisting that they remain in the Land. Jeremiah relates that God says: “I regret the punishment I have brought upon you. Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon…for I am with you to save you” (7-12). Jeremiah’s prophecy continues: “O remnant of Judah! Thus said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: If you turn your faces toward Egypt, and you go and sojourn there…there you shall die” (15-16). But, instead of accepting the prophecy for which they pleaded and promised to accept, these remaining Judeans accuse Jeremiah of lying, having been influenced by his secretary Baruch. They then flee to Egypt, apparently taking Jeremiah with them!
