In the early days of Josiah's reign, Jeremiah wandered the streets of Jerusalem, prophesying that God would raise up a scion of the House of David, a faithful shepherd, who would gather all the scattered remnants of Israel from the north, and then they would dwell in their land in peace and security. At the time, the prophet was sure that this vision was about to be fulfilled —blossoming like the almond branch he was shown — and that Josiah was the great hope. Now he is an adult well past fifty and has borne the suffering and frustration of a much older man. Yet his prophecy about the field in Anathoth transports him back to his childhood and hometown —back to the faith that animated his first revelations. On the eve of Jerusalem's destruction, Jeremiah hears God speaking words of comfort (33:10-11).

This is the mirror image of the terrible curse that Jeremiah cast upon the people of Anathoth (ch. 2). Now, after all those bitter years, he repeats these same words, but inverted — as consolation. All these years after Josiah's fall at Megiddo, after Jerusalem has deteriorated and reached the brink of destruction, Jeremiah utters a prophecy abstract and distant, but eternal:

“Behold, days are coming — declares the Lord — when I shall uphold the good word I spoke about the House of Israel and the House of Judah.
