Maybe the process felt lengthy and tedious. Or maybe you approached that paperwork with excitement, for what it signified: Hope for the future. Most of us don’t approach legal matters with excitement, but the transfer of land looms large in the American imagination as part of the American Dream.

This dream is not limited to our country. In Jeremiah chapter 32, God predicts that Jeremiah’s cousin will come and ask him to purchase his field in Anathoth. Jeremiah is unusually active; many verbs describe his purchase, writing, measuring, etc. We might worry that he is rotting in prison, but here he has things to do to make the purchase happen. Jeremiah’s question gets a response similar to the one Sarah got when she despaired of having a child: “Is anything too wondrous for Me?” asks God.

Jeremiah perceives God’s salvation as being a thing of miracles. We may like our TV shows exciting, but a good, harmonious society is probably better off boring. Each person buying land without incident, sitting under his or her own vine and fig tree. The chapter begins with Jeremiah’s imprisonment in the courtyard of the king, and King Zedekiah ORALLY INFORMING him that his imprisonment is due to the prophecies which he SAID. Jeremiah TELLS the guards of the courtyard a new prophecy concerning the arrival of his uncle. As predicted, his uncle arrives and ORALLY REQUESTS Jeremiah to buy his field. We see that speech was the dominant mode of communication in Jeremiah's time period.

However, in the continuation of the chapter, we see that written communication also had a role in Jeremiah's society. Jeremiah WRITES a deed to make the transaction. The deed had two WRITTEN parts to it - the sealed and the open. The open part allowed people to READ the transaction without breaking the seal. Jeremiah hands over the deed in the presence of witnesses who SIGNED their signature on the document. The chapter ends with words of comfort, describing the time when God will return the Jewish People to their homeland, and many WRITTEN transactions to buy land will take place.

We see that Jeremiah's society was literate, yet it remained an oral society. Writing was the mode of communication when speech was insufficient. While routine communication was conducted orally, testimonies, messages for future generations, and ideas which needed extreme clarity were written down.

Parenthetically, these two methods of communication are also found in Deuteronomy 6:4-8, the section known as the first paragraph of the Sh'ma. The section has an oral communication component: "HEAR, O Israel", the imperative to MEMORIZE and SPEAK the words of the Torah, and to teach them to our children through CONSTANT REPETITION. upon our doorposts.

In the final part of the series, as a commentary to Jeremiah chapter 45, we will discuss a change which occurred to the His everyday experiences in the leadup to catastrophe, such as going to a potter's house (Jer. 19), make him live the prophecies he is called on to convey.

Today's chapter is one of the most intense examples. Unlike the rest of the book, it is told in first person, from Jeremiah's perspective. His personal experience is central to the meaning of the episode.

At the height of Babylonian siege on Jerusalem, when the fall of the city was imminent and Jeremiah languished in prison for his seditious warnings, God called him to buy his cousin Hanamel's field, as Hanamel's nearest relative. This command was based on the law of the redeemer, which we also see in the book of Ruth. If a person becomes so poor that he has to sell his field, his next of kin has the right of first refusal, keeping the field in the family. This practice is rooted in the laws of the Jubilee in Leviticus chapter 25, where fields that are sold by poor owners are redeemed and returned to their owners every 50 years, during the Jubilee year.

Jeremiah instructs his faithful scribe Baruch to do the deal, saying: "Take these documents, this deed of purchase, the sealed text and the open one, and put them in an earthen jar, so that they may last a long time." This act of faith in the long-term future, when Jerusalem is on the brink of annihilation, seems crazy. Yet Jeremiah assures his amanuensis, "For thus said the Lord, the God of Israel, "Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be purchased in the land" (14-15).

The future fate of Jeremiah's field is not just a family drama. It is also a metaphor for the nation. The Jubilee principle underpinning the story that all the dispossessed will return to their land is held out here as a promise to the Jewish people. The reason for the Jubilee redemption is, "The land shall not be sold forever; for the land is Mine" (Lev. 25:23). As Rabbi David Sabato writes, "Here the principle moves from the individual to the national plane." Jeremiah himself is not only the redeemer of his needy cousin's field. Through the meticulous and faithful process of purchase, he becomes the symbolic guarantor of the people's future redemption and return.

Image: Poster Calling On The Nation To Volunteer And Work To Redeem The Land, c. 1940 (detail) / wikimedia

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer32-land.jpg","1536x1536-width":407,"1536x1536-height":422,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer32-land.jpg","2048x2048-width":407,"2048x2048-height":422
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer32-land.jpg","1536x1536-width":407,"1536x1536-height":422,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/jer32-land.jpg","2048x2048-width":407,"2048x2048-height":422
Josh and Leora Blechner have been learning Tanach together since Leora was five years old. He has been prophesying for forty long and lonely years, since he was a teenager (by simple calculation, he is now in his fifties). We have followed him through many challenges and obstacles, including trials that caused him to doubt his own visions and lose the will to prophesy. But until now, he has never questioned the institution of prophecy itself.

Even in his humiliating confrontation with Hananiah son of Azzur seven years earlier, Jeremiah merely prayed that Hananiah's vision would come true. But here, something else happens. He receives a prophecy that his cousin from Anathoth will come to sell him a field, for he has the right of first refusal. When his cousin arrives, Jeremiah is taken by surprise and exclaims, "And I knew this was the word of God." What can this mean? Did Jeremiah need to prove that his vision was from God? The commentators entirely negate this suggestion. For example, Abrabanel writes:

“Although he said, ‘And I knew this was the word of God,’ this does not mean...that Jeremiah initially doubted whether the prophecy that had come to him was the word of God, for the prophets had no doubt about their prophecy, and the prophecy itself was self-evidently a prophecy based on the intensity of feeling” (Abrabanel on Jer. 32:8).

Hoffman's simple reading of the verse seems preferable. Hoffman demonstrates that for many years, Jeremiah has indeed been preoccupied with discerning the truth of his prophecy. The grim reality of his imprisonment just moments before the destruction, with his prophecies heralding national disaster, leads him to think that a message of God suddenly announcing that his cousin is coming to sell him a field is but a surreal hallucination. Much earlier in his career, the people of his hometown conspired against him when he openly questioned the authenticity of Josiah's reformation. For decades he has had no contact with his relatives; he no doubt wonders about them from time to time. Now, as he sits in the prison yard, protected from his enemies yet aware of the destruction that would descend at any moment, he worries that it is not God speaking, but his own voice. Why would God command him to purchase a field just before the entire land is to be destroyed? Why torture him? In the past, he has tried to distinguish between true and false prophecies.
