Never had there been a prayer as long, protracted, passionate, as this. \u201cI fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord\u2019s sight and so arousing His anger\u201d (Deut. 9:18). In the end God relented. He agreed to forgive the people, and promised Moses a new set of tablets to replace those he had broken in his anger and now lay in fragments beyond repair. The new tablets symbolized a new beginning. For another forty days Moses was with God. He then descended the mountain, holding the tablets. The people saw him and what he was carrying and knew that they had been forgiven. <\/span><\/p>\r\n That day, when Moses came down the mountain with the second tablets, became the enduring image of forgiveness. Moses descended on the tenth of Tishrei, and thereafter, the anniversary of that day would become established as a time of forgiveness for all generations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n There is a daring midrash on this, taking as its point of departure the line from Psalm , \u201cHear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.\u201d The psalm, like many others, begins with the word Lamenatze\u2019a\u0125<\/em>, literally, \u201cFor the conductor, the director of music.\u201d The word could be read, however, as \u201cFor the victor,\u201d and with a truly remarkable inversion, the midrash interprets this as: \u201cFor the victor who sought to be defeated\u201d: <\/span><\/p>\r\n \u201cFor the victor who sought to be defeated, as it is said [Is. 57:16], <\/span>I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of Me \u2013 the very people I have created.<\/em> <\/span>Do not read it thus, but, <\/span>I will accuse in order to be defeated<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/i>How so? Thus said the Holy One, blessed be He, \u201cWhen I win, I lose; and when I lose, I win. I defeated the generation of the Flood, but I lost thereby, for I destroyed My own creation, as it says [Gen. 7:23], <\/span>Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out. <\/span><\/em>The same happened with the generation of the Tower of Babel and the people of Sodom. But in the days of Moses who defeated Me [by persuading Me to forgive the Israelites whom I had sworn to destroy], I gained, for I did not destroy Israel. Jeremiah is told to warn the people of their impending doom if they don\u2019t repent and fulfill the Torah\u2019s requirements:<\/span><\/p>\r\n Say to them: \u2018Thus said the LORD: If you do not obey Me, abiding by the Teaching that I have set before you; heeding the words of My servants, the prophets, whom I have been sending to you persistently\u2014but you have not heeded\u2014 then I will make this House like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse<\/span> for all the nations of earth\u2019 (verses 4-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n This puts him at risk of being put to death by \u201chaters\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\r\n And when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, shouting, \u2018You shall die! How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD that this House shall become like Shiloh and this city be made desolate, without inhabitants?\u2019 And all the people crowded about Jeremiah in the House of the LORD (verses 8-9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n The contrast with the people of Nineveh\u2019s reaction, upon being confronted with a similar prophecy from Jonah, is striking:<\/span><\/p>\r\n Let everyone turn back from his evil ways and from the injustice of which he is guilty. Who knows but that God may turn and relent? He may turn back from His wrath, so that we do not perish (Jonah 3:8-9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n The fact that two other people, Micah the Morashtite (v. 18) and Uriah, son of Shemaiah (v. 20), had made similar predictions, saved Jeremiah\u2019s life. Although later, Uriah was extradited from Egypt and killed due to his having given the identical negative prophecy. Had it not been for Ahikam ben Shapham, Jeremiah would have shared Uriah\u2019s fate, although the prophet had said that now that he had delivered God\u2019s message, he would accept willingly whatever the people decided: \u201cAs for me, I am in your hands: do to me what seems good and right to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n Little is known about Ahikam and how he was able to act so protectively toward Jeremiah, withholding him from the wrath of King Jehoiakim. Deducing from the few verses describing him in the bible, Willis J. Beecher wrote the following for the Bible History website:<\/span><\/p>\r\n A prominent man of the time of King Josiah and the following decades\u2026 Ahikam was a member of the deputation sent by Josiah to the prophetess Huldah to consult her concerning the Book of the Law which had been found (see II Kings 22:8-14). Under Jehoiakim, he had sufficient influence to protect Jeremiah from being put to death\u2026 It is clear that both Shapham and his son, like Jeremiah, belonged to the party that held that the men of Judah were under the obligation to keep the oath that they had sworn to the king of Thus said the Lord: Stand in the court of the House of the Lord and speak to all the towns of Judah, who are coming to worship in the House of the Lord, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Do not omit anything. Perhaps they will listen and turn back, each from their own evil way, that I may renounce the punishment I am planning to bring upon them for their wicked acts. Say to them, Thus said the Lord, If you do not obey Me, abiding by the Torah that I have set before you, heeding the words of My servants the prophets whom I have been sending to you persistently\u2014but you have not heeded\u2014 then I will make this House like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of earth\u201d (26:1-6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n This is an abbreviated version of Jeremiah\u2019s Temple Sermon in<\/span> Jeremiah 7:1-15<\/span><\/a>. Here we are told that this sermon transpired: \u201cAt the beginning of the reign of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah\u201d (609 BCE). Then we hear of the violent reaction of those who heard Jeremiah\u2019s warning:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n And when Jeremiah finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, shouting, \u2018You shall die!\u2019 (26:7-8).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The \u201cofficials of Judah\u201d sit in judgment of Jeremiah \u201cat the entry to the New Gate of the House of the Lord (verses 10-11). In his defense, Jeremiah says that he is prophesying in the name of God (verses 12-15). In what follows, the officials and all the people find reason not to condemn Jeremiah to death. And<\/span> finally, we are told: \u201cBut, Ahikam son of Shaphan protected Jeremiah, so that he was not handed over to the people for execution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n Ahikam<\/span><\/a> (whose name appropriately means \u201cMy brother has risen\u201d) was one of those whom King Josiah sent to consult the Prophetess Huldah after the discovery of the Scroll of the Torah in the Temple (<\/span>II Kings 22:12-20<\/span><\/a>). Moreover, we are told that Ahikam was an important figure in the royal court of Judah. Gedaliah, the governor of Judah after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians is frequently mentioned as the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, the royal secretary (see<\/span> II Kings 25:22<\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Jeremiah 40:5-15<\/span><\/a>). Significantly, following the assassination of Gedaliah (<\/span>Jeremiah 41:2-3<\/span><\/a>), Ahikam is mentioned again together with Jeremiah, when Jeremiah, Ahikam and others are forced to flee to Egypt (<\/span>Jeremiah 43:4-7<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n The 19<\/span>th<\/span> century Biblical commentator Malbim <\/span>comments<\/span><\/a> that Ahikam alone saved Jeremiah from the mob and were it not for him, they would have murdered Jeremiah in their rage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Jeremiah goes to the Temple gates to rail against the people and the city:<\/span><\/p>\r\n Then I will make this House like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of earth (verse 6).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The people are furious when they hear what the prophet has to say, and they surround him and want him thrown in prison, or worse. Jeremiah\u2019s reference to Shiloh and the people\u2019s reaction to prophecy against the Temple connects this chapter to Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy in chapter 7. There he told the people:<\/span><\/p>\r\n Don\u2019t put your trust in illusions and say, \u2018The Temple of GOD, the Temple of GOD, the Temple of GOD are these [buildings] (7:4).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n He referred them to Shiloh, which was also the house of worship and yet God allowed it to be destroyed by the Philistines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The message of chapter 26, though, is also directed at the false religiosity of the people:<\/span><\/p>\r\n How dare you prophesy in the name of GOD that this House shall become like Shiloh and this city be made desolate, without inhabitants? And all the people crowded about Jeremiah in the House of GOD\u2026 The priests and prophets said to the officials and to all the people, \u2018This man deserves the death penalty, for he has prophesied against this city, as you yourselves have heard\u2019 (verses 9, 11).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The people are not upset about the message Jeremiah is bringing, but about the idea that he is prophesying against the Temple. They are more upset that he violated a law against cursing the Temple (and by connection, God), then the fact they themselves are the cause of the Temple\u2019s destruction. In verse 15 Jeremiah reminds the people that they are about to commit a far worse act under the guise of protecting some sacred law against cursing the Temple:<\/span><\/p>\r\n But know that if you put me to death, you and this city and its inhabitants will be guilty of shedding an innocent\u2019s blood. For in truth GOD has sent me to you, to speak all these words to you.<\/span><\/p>\r\n I am not cursing the Temple, explains the prophet. If so, I would be liable for the death penalty. If they do repent, \u201cGod can renounce the punishment he\u2019s planning to bring upon them\u201d. But if not, \u201cthen I will make this House like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of earth\u201d (26:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n I recently had the opportunity to visit Shilo, explore its rich history and wonder about the prophet\u2019s words.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Shiloh sits on a beautiful hill with widespread views in the very heart of the Shomron \/ Samaria \/ West-Bank, in the midst of what was once the tribal territorial allotment of the tribe of Ephraim (Jud. 21:19). Long before Solomon\u2019s first Temple was built in Jerusalem, here was the first site of the <\/span>mishkan<\/span><\/em> (Tabernacle). But even earlier, archaeological excavations have shown that the place was already settled during the Middle and Late Bronze Age, and that Shiloh was a walled city with a religious shrine or sanctuary from about 1750 BCE.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The Tabernacle, that the Israelites set up here, was the same \u201ctent shrine\u201d - Tent of Meeting, <\/span>Ohel Mo\u2019ed<\/span><\/em>, they traveled with in the desert (as described in the upcoming Torah portions read in synagogue). Tradition has it, that it remained here for 369 years until the Ark of Covenant was captured by the Philistines in battle. The Tabernacle then moved around a bit until its final home in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\r\n One of the \u201cmoments\u201d it is most famous for is Hannah\u2019s visit, her prayer under Eli\u2019s watchful eyes, and her return later with the long sought after son, Samuel, whom she dedicated to serve God. Samuel who was trained here became one of the greatest prophets of Israel, anointing the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David. At some point, the tent was replaced with a stone structure, and festive pilgrimages headed here for holidays. However, by the time Jeremiah comes around, over three hundred years later, Shiloh had been reduced to ruins and its destiny used as a threat and warning.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Since 1922, archeologists have uncovered the city and learned more about its past. They have found fascinating artifacts. Aside from shards dating to the Israelites\u2019 time, there are also remnants of a Byzantine church and its basilica, a mosaic floor, water holes, walls, houses, an olive-press and a small mosque built from the earlier stones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Today, the site of the ancient town is once again open to passing travelers. Along with a gift shop and coffee shop, there are lively explanations and a movie theater bringing Shilo\u2019s old rocks back to life. Standing at the top of hill, on the backdrop of terraces, grapes and olives all around, it\u2019s possible to feel glimpses of peacefulness and the connection between people and the Furthermore, it exposes our capacity for committing violence against those who express those truths. In this chapter, the Israelites, led by their priests (!) and their (false) prophets attempt to put Jeremiah to death for treason because he condemns their evil ways and prophecies their demise if they do not repent. The chapter further describes king Jehoiakim and his cabinet pursuing another prophet who holds a mirror up to their society, Uriah, dragging him back from his refuge in Egypt to execute him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n Rather than grappling with the allegations of these prophets \u2013 that society had become corrupted by violence, injustice, idolatry \u2013 leaders and their constituents respond by trying to stamp out the voice that adjures them.\u00a0 It is a common story: no one, no community, no society wants to be told that its basic conventions are profoundly wrong, that its roots have become rotten. And the desperation that ensues to do everything but self-reflect is typical. Instead, our shock becomes anger, and we launch our aggression against those who dare challenge the status quo in which we are so invested. We read their message as transgressing the ethics of group loyalty instead of considering the ethics they are actually bringing to light.<\/span><\/p>\r\n To be sure, there are softer, more diplomatic ways to challenge a society than Jeremiah used, and there were prophets who employed such approaches (recall, for instance, Natan\u2019s parable to King David about Bathsheba. That was remarkably effective as a rhetorical\/ pedagogical strategy, as it allowed David to lower his guard and to empathize with his victims).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Moreover, false prophets\u00a0do\u00a0exist\u00a0\u2013 people whose screeds are\u00a0primarily\u00a0fueled by animosity, greed or ego\u00a0rather than\u00a0by\u00a0integrity and genuine concern for others.\u00a0Discerning the difference between a false prophet and a true prophet \u2013 in both the ancient and the modern senses of the word \u2013 can be quite a subjective affair. But if a criticism cuts deeply enough that it brings out rage, it may be worth considering the criticism itself before taking up our pitchforks and going after the messenger. At the site, one student found a piece of ceramic which looked interesting. She showed it to the professor for his assessment. He told her to throw it away and to continue looking for vessels or houses, items that he was interested in finding. She disregarded her teacher's advice, and took the ceramic to her home to clean it up. After removing the dirt, she discovered five lines of ancient Hebrew letters engraved on the ceramic. The fifth line was the complete 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet written in order.\u00a0 However, these letters were written from left to right, as English is written today. It seems that a child wrote them down to practice writing the Hebrew letters. Even Professor Finklestein admitted that it was good that his student didn't listen to his advice this time.<\/span><\/p>\r\n While the message written in the first four lines of the shard is unclear, the fifth line with the complete alphabet is quite revealing. It tells us that literacy was a widespread phenomenon in ancient Israel. If a child living in a remote farming village during the pre-Davidic era knew how to read and write the <\/span>aleph bet<\/span><\/i>, then we can assume that to some degree all the people of this society were literate. However, the picture we receive from chapter 26 of Jeremiah is that Biblical Israel was an oral society, rather than a written one.<\/span><\/p>\r\n It is noteworthy that all of the verbs in chapter 26 of Jeremiah are connected to speaking or listening. Jeremiah is first sent to <\/span>speak<\/b> to the people. He is to <\/span>warn <\/b>them that their refusal to <\/span>listen <\/b>to the words of the prophets will bring dire results upon the city of Jerusalem. The people <\/span>hear <\/b>Jeremiah <\/span>say <\/b>these words causing them to <\/span>shout<\/b> that he is guilty of treason.\u00a0 Jeremiah <\/span>explains <\/b>that he was <\/span>repeating<\/b> the words of God. Different factors <\/span>express their opinion<\/b> if Jeremiah should live or die. The elders defend Jeremiah by <\/span>quoting<\/b> the prophet Micah which they <\/span>heard<\/b> in their youth. Upon <\/span>hearing<\/b> Micah's prophecy, King Hezekiah took heed to it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n This chapter gives the impression that Israel during this time was exclusively oral. There is no written protocol during the court case. Even when the elders of the city bring a proof from the prophet Micah, they do not bring a scroll to read what it is written. Rather, they quote the prophecy, by heart and word-perfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n How do we understand this in light of the archeological find at 'Izbet Sartah?\u00a0 Does the Tanach have other references to whether the Israeli culture was oral or written?\u00a0 Are we the People of the Book, or the People with a Voice? A turning point in the narrative is v. 10: \u201cWhen the officials of Judah heard about this, they went up from the king\u2019s palace to the House of the LORD and held a session at the entrance of the New Gate of the House of the LORD.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n A close reading of the Hebrew, however, reveals that the word House (<\/span>beit<\/span><\/i>) at the very end of the verse is not actually in the text; however, its presence is implied based on both its earlier appearance in this verse as well as its explicit appearance in a similar later verse (36:10). This \u201cnow you see it, now you don\u2019t\u201d played havoc with the text of Rashi\u2019s commentary. As it is currently printed, it reads:<\/span><\/p>\r\n At the entry to the Lord\u2019s new gate<\/span><\/em>: Some have emended the text. When Jehoiachin and some of the Temple were exiled, the soldiers of Nebuchadnezzar smashed the eastern gate. Zedekiah repaired and renewed it, so it is designated \u2018new.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\r\n The opening phrase (\u201cSome have emended\u201d) is such an obvious <\/span>non sequitur<\/span><\/i> to what follows that it begs the question: Who emended which text?<\/span><\/p>\r\n Shadal* explained:<\/span><\/p>\r\n Many manuscripts state: \u201cThe gate of the Lord\u2019s house\u201d (as in 36:10), and it was so translated by the ancients. [Targum rendered it: \u201cAt the entry to the eastern gate of the Temple.\u201d] Rashi, too, transcribed it as: \u201cAt the entry to the new gate to the Lord\u2019s house\u2026\u201d Others, who realized that the word \u201chouse\u201d did not appear in their texts of the verse, added a marginal note: \u201cSome emended,\u201d meaning that the word \u201chouse\u201d was not written by Rashi but added by others. Before this point, Jeremiah had repeatedly stated that his life was in danger because of his prophecies, beginning with a conspiracy against him by the people of his hometown, Anathoth. Now the threat is explicit and imminent. One should recall that at this moment towards the end of the seventh century B.C.E Judah was gravely menaced by the Babylonian army. One might imagine a preacher in California in 1942, when there were fears of a Japanese invasion, repeatedly declaring that the land would be laid waste for the evil of its ways and that Los Angeles and San Francisco would be turned into rubble by a cruel enemy coming from across the great ocean. Such a person would surely have been arrested for treason and perhaps subjected to capital punishment. Jeremiah stands at the entrance to the Temple in the hope that he will awaken the hearts of those who flock to the Temple. \"Perhaps they shall hear, and each shall turn back from his evil path, and I shall revoke the evil.\" Jeremiah knows the royal household is undeserving, but perhaps, through renewed efforts, he will succeed in saving the Temple and Jerusalem from destruction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The only way to rouse the people is through visions of rage and doom. Jeremiah therefore spews short, staccato words of destruction. This is no fanciful, elaborate prophecy. It contains no sophisticated images or vague, elusive metaphors. It is cutting, straight to the point: The Temple is doomed like Shiloh, and the city will be cursed. All who hear him are shocked. They may recognize him from the days of Josiah, when he wandered the streets and called for the purging of idol worship. No one paid him any attention then. But now, after the death of their righteous king, every word strikes them deeply, like a poisoned arrow, and they quickly react.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n The Temple courtyard is teeming with festive throngs, following the king's orders to strengthen their service of God. Such religiosity gives them a sense of security in times of distress. \"This house\" is God's fortress; no harm can befall it. The Temple has endured for centuries, surviving political changes, hostile nations, and national crises since the days of Solomon. The prophets of Jeremiah's time all draw upon the Temple as a source of stability, declaring that \"God's sanctuary will ensure our well-being,\" that \"thus says the Lord: I will bestow peace upon this house,\" and using other such catch phrases to soothe and lull the people into a submissive stupor under Jehoiakim's hand. The priests dedicate themselves to Temple upkeep and service. All these factions unite forcefully against the anonymous prophet who dares to declare in the name of the Lord that \"this house will be like Shiloh.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Mentioning Shiloh and Jerusalem in the same breath is tantamount to blasphemy. The terrible events that occurred in Shiloh are deeply engraved upon the national memory. The Tabernacle that stood there for hundreds of years was corrupted by the high priest's sons. Shiloh also considered itself invincible, graced with God's protection, but it was eventually trampled and reduced to ruins. No wonder the spontaneous reaction of Jeremiah's audience is to lynch him: \"You will surely die!\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n Lau, Binyamin. <\/span>Jeremiah: The Fate of a Prophet<\/span><\/i>.
