This whole land shall be a desolate ruin. And those nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. When the seventy years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation and the land of the Chaldeans for their sins\u2014declares GOD \u2014and I will make it a desolation for all time\u201d (verses 11-12).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The concept of a specific period of time for an exile dates back to Abraham. At the Covenant of the Parts, <\/span>in Genesis 15<\/span><\/a>, God promises Abraham that his children will be slaves in a foreign land for 400 years. Why would God set a specific time period like he did with the period of bondage in Egypt?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The exile, just like the slavery, was a traumatic experience for the nation. An end date softens the blow somewhat. It is like a parent that tells their child to go to time out for two minutes. The child does learn to sit out for bad behavior, but at the same time, the child knows that the parent will return and that forgiveness is in sight.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why seventy? If the idea was to punish a specific generation for causing the destruction, then God should have made the exile 40 years matching the generation-exterminating punishment from the wilderness. Isaiah 23:15 promises that the destruction of Tyre will happen after seventy years:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In that day, Tyre shall remain forgotten for seventy years, equaling the lifetime of one king.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps, the 70 years returns to this theme of Isaiah 23: that the exile period is a way to remove the corrupt leaders from leading the people. Cleansed of this bad influence, the people can return to the land with a clean slate, which is exactly what happens:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, when the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah was fulfilled (Ezra 1:1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter's first verse dates it to the \"fourth year of King Jehoiakim of son of Josiah of Judah, which was the first year of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon.\" This was the year, according to Jeremiah 46:2, in which Nebuchadrezzar and Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, faced off at the city of Carchemish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A Babylonian chronicle, the year-by-year record of the activities of Babylon's kings, confirms the biblical account of this year:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\"The king of Akkad (Nabopolassar of Babylon) remained in his land. Nebuchadnezzar, his eldest son, the prince of the crown prince's palace . . .\u00a0 took his army's lead and went to the city Carchemish, which is on the bank of the Euphrates. He crossed the river against the army of Egypt . . . They struck each other, and the army of Egypt took flight before him, and he inflicted a defeat upon him. He finished them off until none was left.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Within Babylonian history, the Battle of Carchemish marks the first time that Nebuchadnezzar, the crown prince, led the army without his father, Nabopolassar. The old king, now in the twenty-first year of his reign, which would be his last, had brought an end to Assyrian dominion in Babylon, conquered the old Assyrian capital cities of Assur and Nineveh, and eliminated the Assyrian rump state in Harran. Babylon replaced Assyria as a Near Eastern superpower, facing down the only remaining rival, Egypt. The Babylonian victory at Carchemish eliminated the Egyptian presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, and opened the entire region west of the Euphrates River before Nebuchadnezzar's forces. After a brief visit to Babylon for his coronation, Nebuchadnezzar returned and \"marched triumphantly\" (in the words of the chronicle) throughout the region for at least four years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeremiah recognized that this battle marked a turning point for his part of the world. Babylon had emerged as the \"foe from the North.\" In this chapter, his prophecies to Judah (1\u201311) and to the entire world (15\u201338) give expression to the global consequences of Babylon's rise to power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. In our chapter, Jeremiah is told by God to prophecy to the sinful inhabitants of Jerusalem their coming punishment: \u201cYou are to prophesy all those things to them, and then say to them: The LORD roars from on high, He makes His voice heard from His holy dwelling; He roars aloud over His [earthly] abode\u201d (25:30). Jeremiah\u2019s words are parallel to similar declarations made by two other prophets: \u201cThe Lord will roar from Zion. He will make His voice heard from Jerusalem\u201d (Amos 1:2, Joel 4:16). Significantly, these prophets describe God as roaring from Zion, His dwelling place, the Temple in Jerusalem. But Jeremiah describes God as roaring \u201cfrom on high\u201d (i.e. from His heavenly abode) over Jerusalem that is about to be destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The amazing depiction of God \u201croaring\u201d figures significantly in the opening discussion in the Talmud Bavli (Berakot 3a), on the proper times for reciting the evening and the morning Shema. Rabbi Eliezer holds that the evening Shema may be recited \u201cuntil the end of the third watch\u201d. It should be noted that in ancient times, the hours of the day and night were divided into \u201cwatches\u201d (ashmurot<\/em> -- see for example Psalms 90:4) marked by the watchmen calling out the changing of the guard. In the Gemara, it is God who \u201ccalls out the watches\u201d. Rabbi Eliezer adds that at each watch the Holy One, blessed be He, sits and roars like a lion. For it is written: \u201c\u2018The Lord will roar [yish\u2019ag<\/em>] from on high. He will make His voice heard from His holy dwelling. He will surely roar [sha\u2019og yish\u2019ag<\/em>] over His abode\u201d (Jeremiah 25:30). Rashi suggests that Rabbi Eliezer learns that the night is divided into three watches from the repetition of the verbal root Sh-\u2019A-G (\u201cshout\u201d) in our verse from Jeremiah. The Gemara adds a tradition that at each of the three watches of the night the Holy One, blessed be He, sits and roars like a lion and says: Woe to the children, on account of whose sins I destroyed My house and burnt My temple and exiled them among the nations of the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This discussion concludes with a remarkable narrative that confirms this tragic depiction of divine pathos. Rabbi Yose, while praying in the ruins of Jerusalem, hears a divine voice cooing like a dove, saying: \u2018Woe to the children, on account of whose sins I destroyed My house and burnt My temple and exiled them among the nations of the world!\u2019 Surprisingly, the Prophet Elijah appears and explains that this actually happens three times every night. In verses 3 and 4 of this chapter, Jeremiah utilizes a distinctive term.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

From the thirteenth year of King Josiah son of Amon of Judah, to this day\u2014these twenty-three years\u2014the word of the LORD has come to me. I have spoken to you persistently (<\/span>ashkem<\/span><\/em>), but you would not listen. Moreover, the LORD constantly (<\/span>hashkem<\/span><\/em>) sent all his servants the prophets to you, but you would not listen or incline your ears to hear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Eight out of thirteen uses of <\/span>hashkem<\/span><\/em> in the Bible are Jeremiah\u2019s, giving it the appearance of a signature term. While it is translated here as constancy and persistence, it literally means to awaken early in the morning, as in one of its best-known appearances: \u201cAbraham awoke early (<\/span>vayashkem<\/span><\/i>) in the morning, saddled his donkey, took along his two servants and his son Isaac, and set out for the place that God had indicated to him\u201d (Gen. 22:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

And at the other end of the day, in v.10, Jeremiah warned that all sounds of joy (<\/span>kol sason vekol simcha<\/span><\/em>) would soon be banished from Judah, epitomizing them as the sounds of grooms and brides (<\/span>kol chatan vekol kalah<\/span><\/em>) just as he did earlier in 7:34 and 16:9, and as he would, again, in 33:11, making this, too, somewhat of a signature term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our chapter, however, he added, \u201cthe sound of the mill and the light of the lamp.\u201d What do these signify?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashi interpreted the sound of the mill as the grinding of medications to treat a circumcised child and the light of the lamp as indicative of a party. Radak concurred in the lamplight but saw the grinding as preparation for a generic festive meal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Shadal* narrowed the identification of the grindstone to the type that was used by many people in their homes (as opposed to a single industrial one) and designated it: \u201cA sign of civilization.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

25:17 \u201cAnd I took the cup from the hand of the LORD and made all the nations to whom the Lord had sent me drink\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is a bold and quite uncommon move: the metaphoric cup of wrath seems to become an actual cup that the prophet takes from God\u2019s hand. Such quasiphysical proximity between God and the prophet is altogether unusual. But since the cup is, after all, symbolic, the prophet\u2019s taking it from the hand of the LORD finally must be understood as a purely figurative act, and that understanding is confirmed by his making the nations drink from it, an act that could not be literally performed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeremiah no longer portends the emergence of a nation in the north \u2014 that would not be a prophecy, but current events. His role is now to articulate the religious significance of Nebuchadnezzar's rise. Jeremiah is very clear on this; for the first time, he sets forth his political stance, which will remain with him until after the destruction of the Temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeremiah declares Nebuchadnezzar \"My servant\" \u2014 an unusual epithet. Throughout Scripture, this expression is reserved for those whose lives demonstrate God's presence on earth: Abraham, Moses, David, and the prophets of Israel. When Isaiah wishes to say that Cyrus will act as God's agent, he calls him \"His anointed one\" (Is. 45:1) or \"My shepherd\" (44:28).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In contrast, Jeremiah calls Nebuchadnezzar by a term of endearment, not merely agency. Some view this expression \u2014 as well as other allusions \u2014 as proof that Jeremiah supported Babylonia. However, his subsequent prophecies undermine this evidence. Rather, Jeremiah recognizes Babylonia's temporary role and prays for the nation's punishment in due time. He is not pro-Babylonian \u2014 he is faithful to God's word, and therefore he acknowledges Babylonia's role in the fulfillment of God's will. The prophet's job is not to tell the future, but to open the eyes of the people and their leaders to the emergent reality and to cogently and soberly sketch what will unfold. The prophet participates in real life, but from a vantage point that allows him to discern what others cannot.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeremiah now symbolically illustrates his warning of the Babylonian conquest by taking a \"wine cup of wrath\" and \"give drink\" to all the surrounding nations. This drinking party \"celebrates\" Nebuchadnezzar's expected victory over all the kingdoms mentioned \u2014 this in only the first year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign. Before the conqueror even sets his sights on Judah, the prophet is already pouring drafts that symbolize God's wrath via the Babylonian sword. Jerusalem will be the first to drink from the cup, followed by powerful Egypt, Philistia, and many more. But the last to partake of the cup will be \"the king of Sheshach\" \u2014 an allusion to Babylonia itself (using the <\/span>atbash<\/span><\/i> cipher). Indeed, Nebuchadnezzar will have his moment; none will be able to defy him as long as God shows him favor. But Babylon's time will come, too, and the nation will drain the foul cup to its dregs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The verses of this chapter describe God\u2019s frustration with the Jewish people\u2019s failing to heed the warnings to mend their ways delivered by His prophets, and His readiness to punish them by bringing invading armies to embitter their lives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Among the descriptions of these terrible attacks against Israel is a poetic rendering of what a decimated and destroyed people will sound and look like: \u201cAnd I will banish from them the sound of mirth and gladness, the voice of bridegroom and bride, and the sound of the mill and the light of the lamp\u201d (v. 10).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The examples in the first portion of the verse speak for themselves, i.e., things will become so bad that people will no longer be heard laughing, and there will be no more weddings, the quintessential form of human happiness and hope for the future, at least not publicly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But what is meant by the phrases at the end of the verse, \u201cthe sound of the mill,\u201d and \u201cthe light of the lamp\u201d that are predicted to also cease during times of persecution?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Taking its cue from the explicit reference to \u201cweddings,\u201d the Talmud understands \u201cthe sound of the mill\u201d and \u201cthe light of the lamp\u201d as allusions to Jewish ritual observances in general, that before could only be hinted at due to the occupying and persecuting authorities, but now were not be publicized at all:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026The Sages taught: When the gentile governors issued decrees outlawing observance of the mitzvot, members of Jewish communities devised clandestine ways of indicating observance of mitzvot to each other. For example: If one produces the sound of a<\/span> millstone in the city called Burni, this is tantamount to announcing: Week of the son, week of the son, i.e., there will be a circumcision. If one displays the light of a lamp in the city called Beror Chayil, this is tantamount to announcing: There is a wedding feast there, there is a wedding feast there\u2026 (Sanhedrin 32b)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, Abravanel, Metzudat David, and Malbim understand the phrases more generically, in the sense that they represent overall economic, rather than specifically ritual, deprivation. The sounds of grinding grain into flour will not be heard, implying that everyone\u2019s food supply will be heavily impacted, and, in order to conserve fuel, people will be forced to sit in darkness. According to these commentators, the contrast between the beginning of the verse and its final portion is one where the society has not only had to forego its celebrations of the human lifecycle, but also the basic necessities of food and light that had previously offered some respite from the harsh conditions under which they were made to subsist, but now have been severely limited, if not done away with entirely.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Nebuchadnezzar<\/em>. What\u2019s happening at this turning point? Internally, Jeremiah expresses the frustration of being ignored these long years, with no one listening to his prophetic call for repentance. Politically, this is the year that Nebuchadnezzar ascends to power, and immediately begins his conquests of all the lands to the south. Nebuchadnezzar (like Assyria before him, in the prophecies of Isaiah) is God\u2019s instrument to punish those deserving of punishment. And it seems that Judah indeed is deserving.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. 70 years<\/em>. This is the amount of time that the prophecy gives for the reign of Babylonia. A very round, symbolic number. Not a little, in relation to the lifespan of an individual, but not so very much on a historic scale. Remember this number. Soon, we\u2019ll encounter another important prophecy of 70 years (only another two chapters - stay tuned!).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. A prophet to the nations<\/em>. 24 chapters ago, in Jeremiah\u2019s dedication, he was told: \u201cI appointed you a prophet concerning the nations\u201d (1:5). Only now are we beginning to understand why...<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Buzz cuts<\/em>. Unspecified peoples. But they have a particular haircut (verse 23).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Jerusalem first<\/em>! Jerusalem shall drink first from the fatal cup of wrath, which will be passed by Jeremiah from nation to nation. And Jerusalem shall not escape its turn: \u201cIf I am bringing the punishment first on the city that bears My name, do you expect to go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning the sword against all the inhabitants of the earth\u201d (v. 29).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  6. And who is last? A riddle<\/em>. \u201cAnd last of all, the king of Sheshach shall drink\u201d (v. 26). Who was this king of Sheshach, who is to drink the cup of wrath last?
