If a picture is worth 1000 words, how many is a demonstration worth? In this chapter, Jeremiah joins many previous prophets in using symbolic demonstrations to make God\u2019s point to the people. We\u2019ll see many more in the chapters to come.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

School children (and viewers of the Prince of Egypt) are familiar with Moses\u2019s staff turning into a snake \u2013 precisely the sort of demonstration that is engineered to win over an obstinate audience.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our chapter, the obstinate audience is the remaining population of Judea. The symbolic demonstration is a little more complicated than a stick becoming a snake. In verse 1, God commands Jeremiah to get a girdle, or loincloth, and wear it. Jeremiah complies. In verse 3, God commands him to hide the girdle in the hole of a rock in Perath. God then waits many days before commanding Jeremiah to retrieve the girdle from the rock. Jeremiah complies and discovers that the garment is ruined. Verse 8 begins the explanation of the symbol: namely, that like the girdle, the people will be ruined. Like a girdle sticks to its wearer, the children of Israel were attached to God but did not listen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On its surface, this does not seem like a convincing demonstration. Having many days elapse between Jeremiah buying the girdle and its destruction would likely lead any observers to forget the girdle and its significance. Who does God command this for? On its surface, it would seem to be either a demonstration for Jeremiah (to strengthen his resolve) or for the future generations reading this prophecy, for whom \u2018many days\u2019 can pass in few verses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One detail in the text, though, suggests that this prophecy is even more nuanced. The Malbim, writing in the 19<\/span>th<\/span> century, noticed that Jeremiah takes the girdle to Perath. This place (a body of water) is mentioned in Jeremiah\u2019s time, as the site of the battle with Pharaoh Nekho. It is here where the story of the virtuous king Josiah ends abruptly with his untimely death in battle (II Kings 23:29).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We don\u2019t have any indication whether this chapter takes place before or after the death of Josiah, but Malbim thinks it is an explicit reference to God\u2019s concern that the Jews should never go back to Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps the girdle is here because it is a utilitarian garment that people might wear, thinking it would be useful and provide protection. In contrast, the demonstration shows the garment is itself prone to destruction. The nakedness they might experience is explicitly referenced in verses 22 and 26.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The book of Jeremiah plays off his predecessor Isaiah here as elsewhere. If we can\u2019t protect ourselves with garments of ordinary human making, what can protect us?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Isaiah 11:5 provides the answer: \"Justice shall be the girdle of his loins, And faithfulness the girdle of his waist.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At the beginning of our chapter Jeremiah is told by God to buy a linen loincloth and wrap it around his thighs (Jeremiah 13:1). At the end of this parable, Scripture reveals its application: <\/span><\/p>\r\n

For as the loincloth clings close to the loins of a man, so I brought close to Me the whole House of Israel and the whole House of Judah\u2014declares the LORD\u2014that they might be My people, for fame, and praise, and splendor.... (13:11). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

The point of this rather strange story seems to be that the Israelite people are bound to God like a garment to its wearer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Tanhuma Qedoshim 8 elaborates on this image: \u201c\u2018You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy\u2019\u201d (Leviticus 19:2). But, how can human beings be as holy as the Holy One, blessed be He?! The answer is found in our chapter in the prophecy of Jeremiah: \u2019For as a loincloth is bound around the thighs, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,\u2019 declares the Lord, \u2018to be my people for fame [le-shem<\/em>, literally \u201cfor name\u201d], and praise, and splendor\u2019 (Jeremiah 13:11). <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, Israel are named \u201cGod\u201d, as it says: \u201cYou are \u2018gods\u2019; you are all sons of the Most High\u201d. (Psalms 82:6). God is called \u201cwise\u201d, as it says: \u201cWise of heart and mighty in power\u201d (Job 9:4) and Israel is called \u201cwise\u201d, as it says: \u201cSurely this great nation is a wise and understanding people\u201d (Deuteronomy 4:6). God is called \u201cbeloved\u201d, as it says: \u201cMy beloved is fair and ruddy\u201d (Song of Songs 5:10). And Israel is called \u201cbeloved\u201d, as it says: \u201cDrink abundantly, O beloved ones\u201d (Song of Songs 5:1). God is called \u201cchosen\u201d, as it says: \u201cHe is chosen like the cedars\u201d (Song of Songs 5:15). And Israel is called \u201cchosen\u201d, as it says: \u201cFor you are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. Of all the peoples on earth the Lord your God chose you to be His treasured people\u201d (Deuteronomy 7:6). God is called \u201cpious\u201d (Hasid) as it says: \u201cFor I am pious (Hasid)\u2014declares the Lord\u201d (Jeremiah 3:12). And Israel is called \u201cpious\u201d, as it says: \u201cGather My pious ones unto Me\u201d (Psalms 50:5). God is called \u201cHoly\u201d, as it says: \u201c\u201cHoly, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts!\u201d (Isaiah 6:3). And Israel is called \u201choly\u201d, as it says: \u201cYou shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy\u201d (Leviticus 19:2). The Holy One, blessed be He, says to Israel: In this world, you are called \u201choly\u201d. And even more so in the world to come, you shall be called \u201choly\u201d, as it says: \u201cAnd those who remain in Zion, and are left in Jerusalem, all who are inscribed for life in Jerusalem, shall be called holy\u201d (Isaiah 4:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why does God tell Jeremiah to bury an <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>, a belt, or loincloth? Why couldn\u2019t God tell Jeremiah to bury socks or shoes or pants? The answer begins with the specific use of <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>, which only appears four other times in Tanach.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The <\/span>azor<\/em> <\/span>as something good:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

1) The belt identifies Elijah in the book of\u00a0 Kings II 1:8. Achaziah's search party recognizes Elijah because of the <\/span>azor <\/span><\/em>he is wearing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

2) In Isaiah 11, it describes the messiah's two <\/span>azorim<\/span><\/em>, one being <\/span>tzedek<\/span><\/em>, \"justice,\" and one being emunah<\/em>, \"faith.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The bad <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

3) In Isaiah 5:27, it says that a warrior coming to fight Israel will not loosen his <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>. Meaning, the warrior will keep fighting Israel to punish them and he won\u2019t rest.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

4) In Ezekiel 23:15, a woman falls in love with the sons of Babylonia because she sees their turbans and <\/span>azorim<\/em> <\/span>and that's how she identified them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So what is the connection?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God is the <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>. By having Jeremiah bury and abandon the <\/span>azor<\/span><\/em>, he is explaining to the Israelites what happens if they do not take care of this connection to God. If left buried under a rock the protection of God will disintegrate, and instead the <\/span>azor<\/em> <\/span>will be passed along to the warrior and the Babylonians who will take care of it, and cause harm to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter is one of several in Tanakh in which God seems to instruct prophets to do strange things, which turn out to be fraught with great symbolism: Isaiah was told to go about \u201cnaked and barefoot\u201d (20:3); Hosea was instructed to marry a harlot (1:2); and Ezekiel was instructed to eat a scroll (3:1). Maimonides (Guide 2:46) regarded all such incidents as occurring only in prophetic visions, following the paradigm of Abraham and the covenant of the pieces (Gen. 15), which is explicitly designated a vision (<\/span>mar\u2019eh<\/span><\/i>). Here, God instructed Jeremiah: \u201cGo buy yourself a loincloth of linen, and put it around your loins, but do not dip it into water\u201d (1) and, then, to hide it in the cleft of a rock (4). Later, he was told to retrieve it, and its deterioration became a symbol of the fate Israel would suffer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Shadal* provided his own interpretation:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It appears to me that hiding the loincloth and retrieving it were not done publicly but consisted only of what Jeremiah told the people. The intention was that God told him that [Israel] as already dear to Him but that they had deteriorated\u2026 \u201cbut do not dip it into water\u201d at any time so that it should become soaked with sweat and that would hasten its deterioration\u2026 The meaning of this story is clarified below, \u201cFor as the loincloth clings close to the loins of a man, so I brought close to Me the whole House of Israel\u201d (11).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Shadal also cited Maimonides\u2019s opinion, which he contrasted with that of two modern scholars (Steudlin and Rosenmiller), who suggested that it was not even a vision but simply a parable\u2014like that of the Prophet Nathan in 2 Samuel 12. Next, he cited Don Isaac Abrabanel\u00a0 who drew a fine distinction between incidents that are narrated by Scripture (like Isaiah\u2019s going naked and barefoot), which should be presumed to have been actual, and those narrated by the prophets themselves (like Hosea) that could well have been visionary. Shadal observed: \u201cSuch investigation requires considerable analysis, but in our case, there is no reason why it should not have been actual.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is the first time that Jeremiah is commanded to perform an act rather than speak. The silence imposed on him by Jehoiakim is replaced by an action, commissioned by God: buy a linen loincloth (essentially an undergarment), wear it, and do not get it wet. Jeremiah is then commanded to conceal the loincloth in Nachal Perat, near Anathoth. He knows every nook and cranny of the area, having grown up there, and there he can evade the long arm of Jehoiakim's persecution.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The loincloth teaches Jeremiah a lesson about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Israelite kingdom. As he looks at the ruined undergarment, he understands God's word: \"Thus shall I ruin the pride of Judah.\" This prophecy seems to be the source of Jeremiah's frustration with and lack of faith in Jeconiah, successor to Jehoiakim. It might well have taken place during the few days between Jehoiakim's death and Jeconiah's brief reign. With these strong feelings generated by the useless undergarment (symbolizing the king), Jeremiah returns to the public sphere and to a nation reeling from exile. Why have these particular people been exiled to Babylonia? Did the Babylonian king and his officials choose them? Were they selected for some other reason? Was there anyone who wished to go but was unable to? We do not know. But the end of the winter and the following spring must have been hard to bear. The exiled king has left behind an empty treasury, a desecrated and vacant Temple, and has taken all the artisans and elite members of society with him. The people feel orphaned and rudderless. Jeremiah stands at the gate and watches.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jeremiah remembers the worn-out loincloth he retrieved from Perat, which can no longer conceal his nakedness. And then he answers the people's despairing question, why is this happening to us? \"Because of your many sins, your skirt has been uncovered, your limbs laid bare\" (ibid.). Your clothes no longer cover you. Your robes, O Jerusalem, have been peeled away, revealing your nakedness. With this sad declaration, Jeremiah concludes his prophetic use of the loincloth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As elsewhere, the sexual imagery mingles literal and figurative senses. Idolatry is conceived as adultery, the betrayal by Israel of her divine Spouse, and the \u201cvile things\u201d are a fixed epithet for idols. But this pagan activity on the hilltops often involved a fertility cult with orgiastic rites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Perath<\/em>. The story of the linen loincloth occurs near Jeremiah\u2019s childhood home, near Anathoth. Nachal Perath, known today as Wadi Kelt. But commentators abroad weren\u2019t aware of the geographical realia, and tried to understand how Jeremiah got to a different Perath - the Euphrates in Mesopotamia.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Symbolic objects<\/em>. There are two objects in the chapter, the linen loincloth, and the jar of wine. Beyond the messages that the prophet attempts to communicate via these objects, we can ascertain an additional meaning in the choice of these particular objects. The loincloth, which symbolizes the people,\u00a0 is the piece of clothing placed closest to the skin, on the organs symbolizing vitality and power. This was the expectation from the people - intinacy with, and a powerful representation of, God, in the world. The wine jar is not just any piece of breakable pottery. It is a vessel full of drunkenness, and symbolizes the moral depravity and lack of awareness of Jerusalem and its residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. It is I who will feel the pain<\/em>. In verses 15-17, Jeremiah makes a personal appeal, beseeching the people, as part of his trying to convince them to repent, relating the depths of his own anguish if they fail to do so.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Irresponsible shepherd<\/em>. \u201c Where are the sheep entrusted to you, The flock you took pride in?\u201d asks Jeremiah, and passes on to the political leadership the responsibility for the coming cataclysm.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Changing the nature of things (not)<\/em>. \u201cCan the Cushite change his skin, Or the leopard his spots? \u201d (verse 23). No. No way. And the same goes for sinful Jerusalem. Sinning seems to come to it naturally, like skin color and the fur patterns. They won\u2019t mend their ways. So is Jeremiah trying to rouse them to change, with this seemingly hopeless metaphor?
