In the march to destruction, Jerusalem is hit with a severe famine. The threat of famine as punishment appears all the way back in the rebuke in Deuteronomy:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

You shall have to serve\u2014in hunger and thirst, naked and lacking everything\u2014the enemies whom God will let loose against you. [God] will put an iron yoke upon your neck until you are wiped out (Deut. 28:48).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As the people move to reject God and follow the false prophets, famine encroaches on the city. The famine will be followed by its sister punishments of sword and pestilence. Perhaps this famine is also symbolic of the relationship between the people and God and the people and the nations are around them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The key to this comes in two chapters, in Jeremiah 17:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He shall be like a tree planted by waters, sending forth its roots by a stream: It does not sense the coming of heat, its leaves are ever fresh; it has no care in a year of drought, it does not cease to yield fruit (verse 8).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God promises the people that if they follow God, they will be like a tree in the desert that does not care about the world around it. The water that feeds this metaphorical tree can be either the Torah as water metaphor, or God as water metaphor encapsulated by calling God the \u201c<\/span>mikveh<\/em> <\/span>[pool] of Israel.\u201d If the people follow God and the Torah, they will be insulated from the word around them and will be able to withstand famines. It is also their destiny to act as the flourishing tree of Torah and God in the godless desert that surrounds them. Failure to follow God and Torah exposes them to the elements around them both physically and spiritually.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The wells lie empty (v.3). The fields are barren (v.4). There is no rain (v.4). Wild animals struggle to survive (v.5-6). This climate disaster that Jeremiah describes is a consequence of Israel\u2019s iniquity. The people have strayed from God. In fact, they love to stray; how easy it is for them (v.10)! God tells Jeremiah that he shouldn\u2019t pray for the people: God won\u2019t be answering their prayers, so Jeremiah shouldn\u2019t waste his time either.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But they have \u2018enablers:\u2019 Jeremiah complains to God about the false prophets who declare that the famine won\u2019t reach them, that the sword won\u2019t touch them (v.13). It\u2019s all lies, God says, all (v.14) \u201cdeceit of their own contriving\u2014that is what they prophesy to you!\u201d The things that they prophesy won\u2019t happen,<\/span> will<\/span><\/i> happen, to them and to those that listen to them. Jeremiah must warn the city-dwelling Israelites, the ones whose misdeeds have caused these disasters, that they will not be spared. Go out into the countryside, he says, and you\u2019ll see it already: the war, the famine, the destruction of the environment (v.18). It\u2019s coming for us too.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The message of this chapter unfortunately parallels events in the world today. Climate crises are on the horizon in much of the world. Temperatures are on the rise, environments are changing, agriculture is failing, animals are disappearing. Our \u201csins\u201d are different than the Israelites sins: we worship plastics and impermanence, not the Baalim and Asherot. We too love to stray: it is so easy to throw out that plastic cutlery, to sip our coffee from a single-use cup.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We have our false prophets as well. They tell us that it\u2019s natural, that\u2019s its not really as bad as we think it is, that it\u2019s not happening <\/span>here<\/span><\/em>, so it\u2019s not really happening. They tell us we\u2019re safe in our cities, that the effects of climate change can\u2019t touch us in the developed world. Some of it might be true: it\u2019s much easier to not feel the effects when your physical surroundings are designed to repel the climate altogether (think: air conditioning).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But, just like Jeremiah says, none of that means it isn\u2019t happening, out there. We can just look at the world around us to see the truth of this. In 2018 there were more than 17.2 million \u201cclimate migrants\u201d, people forced from their homes by natural disasters and climate change. This number could skyrocket to 143 million by 2050. Jeremiah would tell us to look out at these people, at the world that we don\u2019t usually (and often don\u2019t want to) see.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During 1993 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Yale University, and during 1996 he was the Stroum Professor of Jewish Studies and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle. During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. In our chapter, in a period of severe drought, Jeremiah turns to God and asks: \u201cHave You then rejected Judah? Have You spurned Zion? Why have You smitten us, so that there is no cure?\u201d (Jeremiah 14:19).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Midrash Pesiqta Rabbati 31 concretizes this question with a parable of a king who became angry at his royal consort, whom he loved very much. But because she knew full well that the king loved her so much, she took liberties with his honor and willfully disobeyed his orders. One time she angered the king so much that he ordered his servants to drag her to him by her hair. When the consort\u2019s advisor saw what was happening, he immediately came before the king. He pleaded: O my master, the king! Tell me whether you might eventually want to return her to your good grace. If so, as any man, you should control your wife. But if you have no intention of returning to her, you should legally divorce her so that she might marry another man.
\r\nSimilarly, Jeremiah said before the Holy One, blessed be He: O Master of the Universe! \u201cHave You, then, rejected Judah? Have You spurned Zion?\u201d If You have any intention of returning to her: \u201cWhy have You smitten us, so that there is no cure?\u201d God answered Jeremiah: Go to your master, and to the master of your master, Moses the master of all the prophets, so I said to him at the conclusion of all the admonitions: \u201cAnd yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God\u201d (Leviticus 26:44).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Lamentations Rabbah Proem 24 dramatizes our verse. When the Temple was destroyed, Abraham came weeping before the Holy One, blessed be He, plucking his beard, tearing his hair, striking his face, rending his garments, with ashes upon his head. He walked about the Temple, lamenting and crying\u2026When the Ministering Angels saw him, they arranged themselves in rows like mourners, saying before the Holy One, blessed be He: \u201cHave You, then, rejected Judah? Have You spurned Zion? Why have You smitten us, so that there is no cure?\u201d But this was of no avail. Then, the Matriarch, Rachel, came and demanded of God: Why should You, a King, who lives eternally and are merciful, be jealous of idolatry in which there is no reality? So, why should you exile my children for their sin of worshipping other gods?! Only then, was the Holy One, blessed be He stirred to mercy. He said: For your sake, Rachel, I will restore Israel to their place. And so, it is written: \u201cA cry is heard in Ramah\u2014Wailing, bitter weeping\u2014Rachel weeping for her children\u2026Thus said the Lord: Restrain your voice from weeping\u2026Your children shall return to their country\u201d (Jeremiah 31:15-17).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One of the bifurcations that modern people face is the choice between earning one\u2019s status by being consistently excellent (where is the place where everyone is \u2018merely\u2019 above average?) and feeling worthless. We occupy a culture that stimulates new levels of productivity and achievement by scorning the advances of yesterday, by aiming always toward greater efficiency, greater output, higher standards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet we can\u2019t always do better. It is the nature of reality that there are some limits, and that we operate within those limits. In America, recent data suggests that this is the first generation whose standard of living may not rise to that of their parents. Does that mean that today\u2019s young people are inferior?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The great power of religion is to acknowledge our failures, our errors, our \u2013 old fashioned word here \u2013 sin. By acknowledging that we are creatures who sin, we clear out room to say that our worth comes not from our perfection. Only God is perfect. Our worth comes out of our striving to do better than we did before, which starts by acknowledging the depths of our wrongdoing.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If our sins testify against us, Lord, act for Your Name\u2019s sake; for our rebelliousness is great. We have sinned to You. O Hope of Israel, its Redeemer in time of trouble, why should You be like a stranger in the land?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We begin in stark honesty. We admit that our sins testify against us. But the point is that we don\u2019t feel trapped by those sins. Instead we ask God to act on us, work through us, not for the sake of our track record, but for the sake of God\u2019s essence, which is hope and love.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We know there is some perversity in human nature that makes us return to our errors, to make bad choices, to disappoint and to hurt. Yet we ask God to be our hope. By latching on to a perfection beyond our own capacity, we acquire a way of being lifted beyond any internal possibility. We rise up to a God-generated possibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Sinners, yes? Defined by those sins? Not if we reach to the One who is always holding out a hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Fasting to seek relief from drought is, unfortunately, a time-honored practice. Indeed, an entire tractate of the Babylonian Talmud\u2014<\/span>Masekhet Ta'anit<\/span><\/em>\u2014is devoted to it. Prayers would be recited in the public square, and an additional prayer service, called <\/span>Ne'ilah<\/span><\/em> (closure), was added to the daily order.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter, God warned Jeremiah not to pray on behalf of the people, despite their dire circumstances, because they had renounced their right to His intercession. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

When they fast, I will not listen to their outcry; and when they present burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them. I will exterminate them by war, famine, and disease (12).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Shadal* offered an important insight into the concept of fasting, connecting the word <\/span>tzom<\/span><\/em> to the action of gathering.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It appears to me that the word <\/span>tzom<\/span><\/em> (fast) does not truly indicate the abstinence from food and drink, but the gathering of the people before God for penitence\u2026 Here, too, God says, \u201cWhen they fast, I will not listen to their outcry,\u201d implying that they had gathered for prayer. The word signifies intersection (<\/span>tzomet<\/span><\/em>)\u2026 and in my opinion this is its essential meaning, but it was subsequently borrowed to signify the abstinence\u2026 However, the main purpose of fasting is spiritual affliction and it is called \u201ca fast day\u201d only metaphorically (see Shadal to Isaiah 58:3.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A textual support for that insight may be drawn from Joel 1:14, where \u201cfast\u201d is used synonymously with assembly and gathering: \"Solemnize a fast (<\/span>tzom<\/span><\/em>), Proclaim an assembly; Gather the elders\u2014all the inhabitants of the land\u2014 In the House of the Lord your God, And cry out to the Lord.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We, too, tend to get caught up in the physical elements of our fast days, often more so than their spiritual dimensions. We would do well to bear Shadal\u2019s keen philological insight in mind.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At the beginning (2\u20139) and end of this chapter (19\u201322), the community uses prayer to confront God. Both of their prayers contain outright confessions: \"We have sinned against You\" (7, 20). Despite these explicit statements, however, the nation's \"Why\"- questions to God pull the prayers' tone away from submissively admitting wrongdoing (8, 9, 19). With these questions, the nation accuses God for its current adversity.\u00a0 By asking, \"Why have You smitten us so that there is no cure?\" (19), the nation names God as the source of its problems. Its question, \"Why are You . . . like a warrior who cannot give victory?\" (9), points out God's dereliction of duty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Instead of saving the people, God has become their adversary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In verse 21, the nation employs two arguments to convince God to act on their behalf. They begin by invoking God's reputation: \"For Your name's sake, do not disown us; Do not dishonor Your glorious throne.\"\u00a0 God's inaction would stain God's \"name\" and \"throne.\" They conclude with a legal argument: \"Remember, do not annul Your covenant with us.\" The covenant legally binds God to the nation; a deal is a deal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In their rhetoric, the prayers recall Moses's advocacy on behalf of the Israelites after the incident of the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:11\u201313). Moses, too, asks an accusatory \"Why\" question: \"Why should (NJPS: let not) Your anger, O Lord, blaze forth against Your people?\" (Exodus 32:11). And Moses makes the very same arguments that the nation does. He reminds God of the public relations disaster that would ensue should God opt to destroy the nation: \"Why should (NJPS: let not) the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent the He delivered them, only to kill them off in the mountains?\" (Exodus 32:12). Moses, like the nation, concludes his prayer with a reminder of the covenant: \"Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, how You swore to them by Your Self . . .\" (Exodus 32:13).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

By Jeremiah's time, however, the wilderness strategies of self-advocacy have begun to show signs of age. Unlike in Exodus 32:14, where God \"relents,\" here, God explicitly rejects the prayer. God has grown wise to the prophetic penchant for prayer; God forbids Jeremiah from \"pulling a Moses\" by praying on the nation's behalf (11; compare 15:1). Jeremiah's own protest-- Ah, Lord God!\" (Jeremiah 14:13) falls on deaf divine ears.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 14 verses 7-9 is one of the earliest, clearest examples of a traditional Jewish fast-day prayer. Jeremiah, it seems, does not compose the prayer as much as draw it from the lips of the people themselves. God rejects the people's supplication, and then comes a dispute between the prophet and God, and the prophet hears the final verdict: \"Do not pray on behalf of this people.\" But like Moses, who prostrates himself before the Lord after the sin of the Golden Calf, and like all the prophets of Israel, who suffered the shame of their people's iniquities, Jeremiah struggles against God's decree not to pray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

For years, prophets such as Hananiah son of Azzur force-fed the people the line that God \"will give lasting peace in this place.\" Such claims would never have been made during the reigns of Josiah or even Jehoiakim. Only in the days of Zedekiah was Jeremiah forced to confront prophets who fomented an anti-Babylonian platform. They lulled the people to sleep with worthless promises like \"You will not see the sword or suffer famine.\" The people are not at fault, protests Jeremiah. Blame lies on those prophets who have been feeding them lies! But God is not appeased. Though He concedes that the prophets are at fault, the people still have free choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is unprecedented in the Bible. The prophet beseeches God as the people's defender, yet God refuses to hear him. The prophet fails. The gates of mercy remain impenetrable. Death stands at the door. Jeremiah envisions the city's near future, and it breaks his heart. Jeremiah accuses God of annulling His covenant. In the terrible curses of Leviticus, God limits the curse He will visit upon the land should Israel sin:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet, despite all this, when they are in enemy territory, I shall not reject them or revile them so as to wipe them out, breaching My covenant with them. (Lev. 26:44)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

God clearly states the conditions of His covenant: I shall not reject them or revile them. I may grow angry, punish, become furious, and exile \u2014 but I shall never break the covenant. God has promised never to wipe His people out. Now, facing famished, humiliated Jerusalem, Jeremiah screams at God: \"Have you rejected Judah completely? Do you revile Zion?\" Jeremiah disregards God's instructions not to pray for the people. We acknowledge the wickedness that caused our downfall, but are the gates of prayer truly locked? Jeremiah's appeal receives no answer. He is left with a question mark and his broken heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

14:6 \u201cAnd wild asses stand on the bare heights, they sniff the wind like jackals, their eyes go dead, for there is no herbage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

More literally, \u201ctheir eyes are finished.\u201d Later Hebrew traditions made this an idiom for pining or longing, and that could conceivably be its meaning here. But the sense may rather be that the eyes of the wild asses, faint with hunger, go dead as part of their failing state. Lundbom proposes that the lack of vegetal nutrients in fact leads to blindness in such animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Not just any old drought<\/em>. Think biblically. Remember that a drought is never a random natural disaster: \u201cTake care not to be lured away to serve other gods and bow to them. For the LORD\u2019s anger will flare up against you, and He will shut up the skies so that there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce; and you will soon perish from the good land that the LORD is assigning to you\u201d (Deut. 11:16-17).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Mikveh Israel (\u201cHope of Israel\u201d).<\/em> A Jeremian epithet for God. It will appear again 3 chapters from now. The name expresses the message: You are the source of our hope, and also the source of life-giving water during a drought. It was a hope, that in this chapter and in that historical period, was not fulfilled. Many years after Jeremiah, in 1870, the name Mikveh Yisrael was given to the first agricultural school in the Land of Israel. A different period, and a different sort of hope.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. A list of the powerless.<\/em> In verses 8 and 9 there is a list of people who have various types of powerlessness in society. The people are beseeching God, that He not behave like them. \u201cWhy are You like a stranger in the land, Like a traveler who stops only for the night? Why are You like a man who is stunned, Like a warrior who cannot give victory? Yet You are in our midst, O LORD, And Your name is attached to us\u2014 Do not forsake us!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Fatal optimism<\/em>. The false prophets, who claim to be prophesying in God\u2019s name, proclaim messages of hope and optimism. But it is precisely this optimism that leads to blindness to reality, and to eventual destruction. Jeremiah, as a true prophet, expresses deep empathy with the people who are being misled by his competitors, the false prophets. His conversation with God about this, in verses 13-16, raises the question of who is responsible for this situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. A prayer, by the book<\/em>. In the people\u2019s prayer in this chapter, we can find all the right elements. Regret, repentance, the memory of the covenant, beseeching and \u201cdo it for Your sake.\u201d Why doesn\u2019t it work? Is the prayer not sincere? Is rejecting their prayer God\u2019s strategy to up the repentance ante?
