You are the Companion of my youth\u201d (3:4);\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the shameful idolatry has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. Let us lie down in our shame, let our disgrace cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers from our youth to this day, and we have not heeded the LORD our God (3:21-22).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God remembers the \u2018youthful\u2019 nation, but a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cursory review of the wilderness years shows that things were not smooth sailing between God and the Israelites. God and Moses constantly had to fight with the people. The people openly rebelled several times, including two devastating moments with the Golden Calf and the spies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would God choose to mention the wilderness years here if they were so far from perfect?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a child grows up, a parent often fondly remembers them as young children growing up at home. These fond memories overtake the daily fighting to go to bed on time, tantrums, screaming, and slammed doors that happen in all households.\u00a0 This does not mean that the parent is lying to themselves. It means that the parent realizes the growing pains that are part of any child\u2019s life. God's message to Israel here is that God can forgive and forget past transgressions. Israel as \u201cyouth\u201d were responsible for painful rebellions against God, but God still remembers them fondly. It is not too late for Israel now to repent. But they eventually grow, and start thinking for themselves: they develop agency. If we are not careful, we feel righteously justified in our anger when they do not act as we wish.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, in God\u2019s case, when they do not worship us.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Jeremiah chapter 2, the very fact of human agency seems to anger God, who longs for the helpless baby days, when the Israelites were newly freed slaves with no self-determination. The metaphor used in Jeremiah is of a newlywed rather than a baby, but the two share a disturbingly similar guilelessness and dependency. \u201c\u2018I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me \/ and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown\u201d (2:2-3).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, whipping into a froth, God continues, sounding like an overbearing Jewish mother, berating her adult children: \u201cWhat fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves\u201d (2:5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will just come out and say it: God has a lot to learn here. Putting aside the incessant metaphors of wanton, misbehaving women \u2013 another area in which the God of Jeremiah could use some growth \u2013 there is the basic character flaw of trying to control others. The Israelite people are growing out of their childlike relationship to God, and rather than rejoicing, God is wild with rage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the sort of thing that annoys people about the Biblical God. And given passages like this, I find it fascinating that we are still in conversation with this God after all these years.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of my particular family, our trajectory manifests the little painting my mom has hanging in her bathroom: \u201cFamilies are for growing up in, growing away from, and returning to.\u201d My family left their relationship with God, probably in part because of passages like this. Who would want to keep a conversation going with a domineering, inflexible deity who has no power but plenty of complaints?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then I came back. And so did God. And being a parent has made me much more compassionate about God\u2019s foibles and weaknesses. I think that God and I are both learning \u2013 on the job \u2013 how to love well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The God I see here is made in our image, just as we are said to be made in God\u2019s. An imperfect God, whose imperfect creatures are in a mirrored process: the slow, uneven story of growth. Over a lifetime, over centuries, over millennia. A parent-God, a God-in-progress, Being what God Will Be. The focus of much of the remaining verses in this chapter is on the people\u2019s abandonment of God and their propensity for idol-worship. How do these spiritual failings become a defilement of the physical land?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jewish idea of the connection between physicality and spirituality is part of our daily lives. <em>Kippot<\/em> (skullcaps) and <em>tzitzit<\/em> (fringes) are a reminder that God is ever-present; modest clothing elevates our spiritual awareness; a <em>tallit<\/em> (prayer shawl) helps to focus prayer. Shabbat and holiday candles bring light to the world and wine for kiddush sanctifies our holy days. We refrain from wearing leather on Yom Kippur, and we use food we to symbolize and remember our relationship with God and take care in ensuring the <em>kashrut<\/em> of what we put in our bodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence of the relationship between physicality and spirituality permeate almost every aspect of Jewish life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, many studies have indicated the direct positive relationship between spiritual and physical health. In fact, neurotheologists began showing us, over a decade ago, how prayer rewires the brain and improves cognitive function in multiple ways. Similarly, the connection between physical and mental health is universally recognized in the medical world.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this complaint from God goes much further. \u201cYou defiled My land\u201d by worshipping idols implies that our spiritual activity has a tangible impact not just on our bodies and minds, but on the physical space in which we dwell.\u00a0 To make the point even more clear, the consequence of turning away from God and toward idols is prophesied as eviction from the land and devastation of the land itself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we speak of our obligation for \u201ctikkun olam \u2013 repairing the world\u201d we mean both spiritual and physical restoration. At the conclusion of our daily prayers in the <em>Aleinu<\/em> prayer, we beseech God to bring us to the time where we will behold banishing idolatry from the earth (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leha'avir gilulim min ha'aretz<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and false gods will be utterly exterminated (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve'haelilim karot yikaretun<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), to perfect the world (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letaken olam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) The intention here is that God recalled the favor and attachment that He bestowed [on Israel] in its youth and His love [for Israel] as a bride. Therefore, even if He must now punish them, He will remain devoted to them, for \u201cIsrael is sacred to Him\u201d (3). Nevertheless, He is obliged to rebuke them frontally and to say, \u201cWhat wrong did your fathers find in Me that they abandoned Me?\u201d (4).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadal also drew a contemporary religious moral from this distinction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears to me that [man\u2019s] devotion to God is not \u201ca favor\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Even though those who love Him are called \u201cfavored\u201d (Ps. 50:5, 52:11, etc.), <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> really applies only in matters between people, or between God and people\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophets taught the people that God preferred favor to sacrifice (Hosea 6:6) and that \u201cknowing\u201d God was to know that He acts with favor, justice, and righteousness and that is what He desires, since His \u201cway\u201d is \u201cto act righteously and justly\u201d (Gen. 18:19). After prophecy ceased, the Israelite masses fell into great error and considered matters between man and God to be \u201cfavors\u201d [which man, then, could terminate at will].<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appears that Shadal was taking a veiled swipe at the Reform movement, which had proclaimed the precedence of social justice over ritual. First, we should note that the king is not explicitly mentioned here. On the contrary, Jeremiah greatly esteems Josiah and his efforts to cure Judean society's spiritual ills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The priests are the first in Jeremiah's line of fire. He does not address the Temple, but seeks out those responsible for the spiritual deterioration of the people. Teaching the people Torah requires the priests to wander among the cities of Israel. Yet it emerges that Jeremiah's priestly contemporaries have been cloistered in the Temple and singularly focused on its service, living off public funds and neglecting their primary role \u2014 teaching Torah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, Jeremiah attacks the \"handlers of the Torah,\" who \"know Me not.\" Rashi explains that this censure is aimed at the judges. They are the Torah's handlers, running the Torah-based judicial system, but without really knowing God. Knowing God does not mean simply grasping the Torah intellectually--it emerges through action. As God says of Abraham: \"For I know him, that he will instruct his children and household after him to keep the way of the Lord, to do what is right and just\" (Gen. 18:19). Here too, it appears that the \"way of the Lord\" is doing what is right and just. This radical idea removes the religious act from the realms of meditation and seclusion and places it squarely within the sphere of social action and concern for others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By \"shepherds,\" Jeremiah generally means the leaders who direct the people and their behavior. Relating to such leaders as shepherds is a favorite metaphor of his; after all, he grew up on the edge of the desert. Throughout his childhood, he watched the shepherds and determined that the behavior of the flock depends on the shepherd.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prophet wanders among his people, shouting at all sectors of society about their rejection of God. He is met with total indifference: \"I am not defiled.\" For the first time, the young prophet adds social criticism to his religious reproach. \"In addition, your garments are stained with the lifeblood of the innocent destitute\" \u2014 this refers to overt, shameless social violence. It\u2019s the story of the courtship and new relationship between God and Israel (verses 2 and 7).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The pit and the spring<\/em>. What would you prefer in your yard? A spring of fresh water, or an old cracked pit that you had dug in order to collect rainwater? That\u2019s how teh prophet describes the foolishness of exchanging faith in the Living God, for foreign beliefs: \u201cFor My people have done a twofold wrong: They have forsaken Me, the Fount of living waters, And hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, Which cannot even hold water\u201d (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Spot and stain remover<\/em>. Is there a way to cleanse the stain of sin? According to verse 22 - no. At least not yet: \u201cThough you wash with natron And use much lye, Your guilt is ingrained before Me.\u201d Both natron and lye, the bleach of the ancient world, won\u2019t help. If you remember, though, 67 chapters ago, Isaiah was more optimistic abou the possibilities of real purification and whitening: \u201c\u2018Be your sins like crimson, They can turn snow-white; Be they red as dyed wool, They can become like fleece\u2019\u201d (Is. 1:18).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A lot is a lot<\/em>. What is the scope of idol worship in Judah? \u201cFor your gods have become, O Judah, As many as your towns!\u201d (verse 28). And of course, when their help was needed, they were nowhere to be found...<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Looking for love in all the wrong places<\/em>. The prophecy gives voice to the frustration of the betrayed. But we can also get a sense of the beloved who is disloyal. She is young, and so hungry for love, that she is willing to give everything to receive it. Even when it becomes self-destructive.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Homeland<\/em>. A picture of the landscape of the prophet\u2019s homeland arises from the prophecies. The edge of the wilderness, the northern, Judean Desert.
