Chapter 5 is no different. Here again Jeremiah prophesies against Judah, telling them of all the terrible events that will occur, even as the people continue to claim that no harm will come to them. Verses 11-13 lay out very particular accusations against Judah and Israel – they have spoken falsely about God. They have sinned in their speech by denying God’s speech through Jeremiah.

What is God’s response? In verse 14 God places his own words into Jeremiah’s mouth as a fire, designates the people as firewood, and declares that the people will be eaten by this fire (verse 14). Whereas the people had sinned through their speech, God will consume them through Jeremiah’s prophetic speech.

How will this consumption happen? Verses 15-17 describe the coming of enemies (i.e., Babylonian warriors) who will devour every aspect of the life of the Judeans. As the arrows of the warriors go out, they create graves ready to swallow up and eradicate the Judeans. They sinned by using their mouths in blasphemous speech and now they will be destroyed by the mouths of Jeremiah and their enemies. What are the ways that our own sinful speech can come back to consume us and those we love? Rav Qatina said that even prior to the fall of Jerusalem, “men of faith” were still to be found there. But Raba countered that Jerusalem could only have been destroyed when there were no “seekers of faith” left, as it says: “Look about and take note: You will not find a man, There is none who acts justly...” (Jer. 5:1). This ancient tradition suggests that throughout our history it is those who have dealt justly and “kept the faith” who, by their righteousness, have continued to protect Jerusalem.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/jer5-protector.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/jer5-protector.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/jer5-protector.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/jer5-protector.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Rabbi Dr. Analia Bortz is a medical doctor with postdoctoral studies in Bioethics. These thoroughfares are filled with spiritual and cultural revolution. The king's emissaries patrol every corner, stamping out any traces of idol worship still to be found. Pagan priests are arrested, and inspectors go from house to house enforcing the king's orders.
