Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.

There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And when this happens, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mlk.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1536,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mlk.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1919
Rev. At that time, many people thought that by bringing sacrifices, God's love and protection were guaranteed. In response to this idea, Jeremiah said the following prophecy:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt-offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat meat” (7: 21).

Jeremiah was saying that sacrifices don’t have any religious value in the eyes of God, if they are giving prior to the correction of one's actions. The implication of this prophecy is that God doesn't wish for the people to bring sacrifices to the Temple, until they repent. Jeremiah explains God's reasoning:

For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offerings or sacrifices (7:22).

The people who heard Jeremiah proclaim this prophecy were undoubtedly confused. In the Torah, particularly in the book of Leviticus, God clearly commands that the people bring sacrifices. What does Jeremiah mean when he says that God didn't ask their fathers to do so? To clarify his message, Jeremiah continues to prophesize:

…but this thing I commanded them, saying: 'Hear my voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and walk in all the ways that I command you, that it may be well with you' (7:23).

Jeremiah wasn't saying that God is against sacrifices. Rather, Jeremiah was giving a similar message to the above essay of Robert Fulghum: First work on the basics. Promote justice, show kindness, and give charity. On those “glass half full” kind of days, this verse provides some comfort that God does indeed heed the pleas of the brokenhearted. But on glass half empty days, those days in which we are particularly likely to want to cry out for help or even just for God’s attention, this verse could be terrifying. Sure, God might hear our prayer, but what do we do if God has turned away from us, or decided to meet our prayers with obstinate rejection?

It seems the verse contains its own answer. God has to tell Jeremiah not to pray specifically because God will be moved by Jeremiah’s prayer if Jeremiah offers it. In the case of the disobedient Israelites, God was determined to enact their punishment. But the verse seems to imply that God needs to take the extra step of forbidding Jeremiah’s prayer because it might interfere with God’s plan. It seems God learned from Moses, that God cannot help but listen to pleas for mercy on God’s people.

To those who doubt God’s attentiveness to our needs, this chapter of Jeremiah delivers a strong message: God hears our pleading and prayer, and God is moved by it, even when God would rather not have mercy on us. For much of the series, I thought it was weird: why were these characters so desperate to attach themselves to another person? There are many indications that these chapters relate his early forays into prophecy, while he is yet discovering the nation's impatience and the Godless leadership that is lulling the people to sleep. Jeremiah perceives Josiah as a genuinely righteous leader, but he alone is not strong enough to extricate the people from the mire of idolatry. On the one hand, Jeremiah wishes to emulate Moses, who implored God even after the sin of the Golden Calf, begging Him to rescind His anger. On the other hand, he feels that Israel's fate has been sealed and that the gates of prayer have been locked before him.
