Life under this regime meant partial autonomy, but extensive tribute. For many of the Babylonians’ vassals, who remembered their recently lost freedom, this situation was unacceptable. One can hear phrases from Psalms broadcast on the radio, find expressions from Genesis in children’s books, and read verses from Proverbs on billboards.

However, there are times when knowing colloquial Hebrew can cause one to misunderstand the Bible. For example, in 2 Chronicles chapter 30, King Hezekiah commands “La’asot Pesach” (literally, “To make Passover”). While this means that King Hezekiah called the people to come to Jerusalem and bring the Passover offering, many Israeli school children visualize the King of Israel starting a clean-your-house-before-Passover campaign which is the usage of the phrase “La’asot Pesach” in Israel today.

The meaning of Hebrew words can change over time and understanding the original meaning of the Biblical Hebrew can often be crucial for a correct understanding of the Biblical message.

An example of this occurs in the translation of the words "Haskel Vyode’a oti” in verse 23. The JPS 1917 edition translates these words as "That he understandeth, and knoweth Me," which is similar to the meaning of the words “haskel” and “da’at” in Israel today. And “tree of life” means the Torah, as it says: “She is a tree of life to those who grasp her” (Proverbs 3:18). But if he be unlearned, he should simply become humble…’”

“Rabbi Hama bar Hanina said: ‘What is the meaning of: “Death and life are in the hand of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21)? But does the tongue have a “hand”? Rather, this tells you that just as the hand can kill, so too can the tongue kill. Now, you might think that just as the hand can kill only what is near it, so too the tongue can kill only what near it. Therefore, Scripture says: “Their tongue is a sharpened arrow” (Jeremiah 9:7). This tells you that the tongue can kill at a distance like an arrow. But, why then was it necessary to also state: “Death and life are in the hand of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21)? This accords with what Raba said: One who seeks to kill can do so with the tongue by employing evil speech. But one who seeks life can also do so with the tongue, by using speech to engage in Torah’” (according to the commentary of Rashi).

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer9-evil-tongue.png","1536x1536-width":1095,"1536x1536-height":1280,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer9-evil-tongue.png","2048x2048-width":1095,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer9-evil-tongue.png","1536x1536-width":1095,"1536x1536-height":1280,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/jer9-evil-tongue.png","2048x2048-width":1095,"2048x2048-height":1280
Alex Israel teaches Tanakh at the Pardes Institute, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi and Matan, Jerusalem.
